How to remove tyres from wheels at home?

i use a car jack to break the bead and then tyre levers to get em off, its hard work though.

If the tyres are no good then I do them myself, if not easier and less swearing to pay someone to do them, lol.

I had two sets of wheels,i decent set of wheels with curse word tyres and I curse word set of wheels with decent tyres,so I took them to a tyre company and they charged me £30 to completely swap em over as I still need some sort of trye on the curse word wheels so I could use them to move a nother car about.
I thought that was a price well worth paying 8 off and 8 on(lot less hastle)

Can I ask how you break the bead with a jack. I'm renovating my Alfa alloys one at a time and it will be a lot easier to keep the paint off the tyres with the beads popped off. Does it knack the tyres?

I used to break beads using a plank of wood rested on the tyre (laying on the floor) then drive my landy up the plank of wood.. lol

I use a ford sidelift jack from a mk5 cortina as it has a nice narrow foot and a decent winding handle, when I had a car it fitted I stuck it in the car, now I have a bit of pipe under a heavy bench in the barn that it goes in and I stick the foot on the tyre and just jack it up, pushes the bead downwards off the rim.

i have seen one chap do it, He had a RIM with no tyre! He bolted it to his car. Jacked the car up, Put the wheel he needed the bead breaking on under the car on its side and lowered the car down til the bare rim pushed down on the tyre and off it came!

I've seen (somewhere on the web) of using a 2m length of 2x4 and a shorter length and a car sill as a bead breaker (for motorbike tyres)...

Wouldn't bother, pain in the butt. Find a quiet fast fit and drop 'em a fiver. They'll be off in no time.

The risk of injury and insanity is too great. Unless you have the correct tyre levers and a bead breaker take it to your local ATS or something!

It is possible but its an art in itself. Difficult not to damage alloys too.

I changed 6 tyres by hand last week after the quote for £15.00 per rim at ATS I thought I would have a go
used a club hammer and dunlop tyre lever (rounded end )
to break the bead , just working round bit by bit
then levered off with a large tyre lever and the small dunlop and plenty of washing up liquid
took me a while ;D but I don em ;D

Short piece of 2" angle iron and big sledge hammer. Not on your best alloys though.

try a few of the local tyre places as some will others wont ive got a place that do mine but the deal is i take the tyres with me as it costs them £2 a tyre to dispose of !!! so make sure you tell them you will get rid of the tyres i just take them to different council tips & get freinds & family to do it if they are going its a lot less messing about & you don't risk hurting yourself or damaging something

Breaking the bead is the easy bit. Let all the air out of the tire and then drive over the tires edge with your car. If you car is to low jack it up and drop it in the tire. Easy as pie.

Getting the tire off is hard. i did it once with 2 crow bars and a big rubber hammer. mind you i didn't care about the rim, it did get a fare bit scratched on the inside.
