So, alot has happened since I last updated but i'll remedy that. The long and short of it is this is on the road as of today. Straight through the MOT with some very nice complements from the MOT chap. Here she is this morning waiting to go to the test... That's another one back on the road after an 8 year layup!

Great to see another 205 back on the road . 80k? Mine is on around 172k! Still, it goes rather well, but then it is not quite as it came to me (or as tidy as yours).

Good work mate. Looks lovely. Mine's back on the road... Doesn't look anywhere near as good as yours though, but it is brilliant to be back in the drivers seat. Such great cars to drive. It may have to go though, too many toys which I'll be gutted about! Or maybe I'll start again and do it properly like you have

Thanks guys, she's no minter (yet) but all of the oily bits are right now. Needs a bit of a tuneup and the alignment doing but i'll get that done this week. Runs alot better now i've replaced the vacuum pipe from the inlet manifold to the distributor! So, been out and about enjoying this. So much fun to drive! Went over to see my mate Pete who has an MI-16 converted one and we went for a bit of a drive... We're off to Snetterton for a trackday on Friday which should be fun.

Had a cracking day at Snetterton on Friday. Was my first trackday so nerve wracking at first but as the day went on I was getting quicker and quicker. Ended up being held up by an Elise and a couple of 911's on the last session I still have lots to learn but have got the bug now. Just need more power!! So, a GTI-6 conversion is now on the cards as I was getting trounced on the straights putting me behind cars which weren't as quick on the twisties which was a shame. Easily remedied though B)

I thought I’d put together a bit of a roundup of where I’m at with this, what has been replaced in the rebuild and then a little plan of where this is going from here. Engine Standard 1.9 8v Replacement parts Cambelt Cambelt rollers Waterpump Radiator BBM silicon hose kit Alternator Auxilliary drive belt Airfilter Fuel filter Oil filter Engine oil To do GTI-6 conversion, engine bay repaint. (engine donor purchased) Chassis Replacement parts Bilstein Dampers (306 GTI6 parts at rear for improved stiffness) Rear beam fully rebuilt and powder coated. Lowered 40mm PI -40mm Front springs Drop links Top mounts Yokohama Parada spec 2 tyres all round Brake pipes Brake Flexi hoses Brake rear compensators (Bosch) Discs all round Pads all round To do Upgrade to GTI-6 calipers discs and pads up front, upgrade to braided flexis, upgrade to 406 master cylinder, refurbish wheels in original silver, obtain missing wheel centre. Body Standard. Replacement doors (good secondhand) painted to match. Brand new wings painted to match Bodykit re-died dark grey, parts replaced where damaged with good secondhand. Treated and painted underside. To do Get hold of a front bumper red insert. Full body respray in original colour including door shuts etc. Interior Standard, cleaned as best as I could. To do Undecided, either cage and replace seats with buckets or tidy up the original parts. Either way, any mods will be reversible (bolt in cage, seats will be kept) I’m not going fully stripped out whichever I do. The plan is to get a few miles on her over winter and then whack a GTI-6 in over a weekend before spring time for next years track day season. After next summers fun I’ll be looking at taking her off of the road for a few months, freshening up the engine bay and refitting the engine after that too has been freshened up. The rest of the jobs will be done as I go along. This isn’t going to be a quick project but at least she’s back on the road and being used again now. Oh yeah, and I’ve just bought a nice low mileage Xsara VTS for the engine…. Current pics… The donor

Now don't get me wrong I love my 205GTi... but why not just use the VTR if its a good low mileage one?
Mad.

When I say good, I mean engine wise... The rest is not quite so. It's the cheapest way to get a GTI-6 engine basically while allowing you to actually make sure it's ok with a test drive. £500 for the whole car with 76K and FSH and i'll make a fair chunk of that back breaking the Xsara. Makes sense to me.

Now this is getting quite interesting . This may sound crazy but I know a few GTi-6 conversions still use the stock 205 calipers (if they are of the alloy variety) on fast road pads. Besides saving on unsprung weight (GTi-6 items are not the lightest of things) the braking performance with a decent set of pads is quite surprising. I know since I did the mild upgrades to my 1.6 GTi brakes (M1144 pads with braided pipes, new discs and ATE Blue brake fluid) the brakes are surprisingly sharp (you only need to think about braking and it will slow down). OTOH it does seem to vary from car to car (condition of the calipers I guess). My 106 on the same sized brakes (but the heavier ATE items) is pretty dire in the brakes department! Please only take the above as a suggestion anyway . If you do go ahead with the GTI-6 brake conversion (or another) I do have some brakes from a Xsara VTR (266mm Lucas items) complete with Goodridge braided hoses (same as the GTI-6 I believe) and with GTI-6 Mintex M1155 pads (on the VTRs you can take advantage of using the full surface of the disc this way). I was planning to run them on the 106 but my plans have changed with that car. If you fancy them I am sure something can be done .

Thanks Chas, that's good input I think i'll keep the VTS calipers "in stock" and see how it feels with decent pads in the standard brakes to kick off with. I understand that 307 HDI calipers are also a popular upgrade. Do you know what the weight situation is with these?

They AFAIK are about as heavy as thes GTi-6/VTS items, but you will be hard pushed to find something as light as the Bendix brakes. The 307 HDi calipers from what I understand are the same size (brake diameter) as the VTS items but with a smaller piston so that you will not gain the long pedal. You can argue they are not as powerful as the VTS brakes but they are considered by a number of people to still be an improvement. If you want (I noticed you are in Northants) you can have a go in my car if you wish and see if they are for you .

Not updated on this in quite a while, mainly because i've been out enjoying it at the weekends! Tax is up at the end of October so it'll be coming off the road for the 16v conversion and some TLC!

So, it’s been a while without much in the way of updates. This weekend we decided to get the engine and box out of the Xsara. We pulled the engine and box out. Dragged the Xsara’s carcass out of the garage with great care, clearly. Split the engine and box (I’ve decided to use my standard box as it’s in fine fettle) Got the engine on the stand and Pugley in the garage ready for surgery So, next weekend I’m going to get the last valuable bits off the Xsara (rear beam, alloys, CD changer, Exhaust, front struts, steering rack) and then it can go. Then it’s a case of selling off the last bits that are in the way and it’s time to crack on with getting the 8v out of the Pug!

Great to see that this project is making headway. It is reminding me to get mine back on the road! (ATM, it really does not need much!)

You should be able to get the engine in one day. Getting it started might take longer!

You should be able to get the engine in one day. Getting it started might take longer! Yes indeed, we did my mates MI-16 in a day and had it running on day two. I'm planning on giving the bay a good going over while the 8v is out on this one though. It's a bit tatty (no rust though) and the loom for the lights etc isn't in the best condition so figure it's the right time to go a bit OCD while it's empty I only tax it for 6 months of the year so no rush now.
