Thinking about a power upgrade for the old goat. Whats the easiest upgrade that you chaps have experience in and what would need customising? I'm after something like a 1.6, or something economical but will make it go sideways a bit ;D ;D
Thanks for looking.

Crikey if you think a 1.6 Pinto is a power upgrade you really are not producing much bhp already. If you are looking at Ford Power why don't you just go for a CVH. Ive also seen a couple of 1.6 ohv crossflows recently going cheap.

1.6 vs 2.0 economy is the same with a pinto really with the 2.0 you have more power so don't have to rev it asmuch to go faster so don't use as much petrol i had a fairly naughty 2.0 in a capri with a 3.09 rear diff it would do 130 on the satnav and cruising at 70-80 on a long run i would get 35mpg ... on a 38dgas properly set up and jetted engine was a ported and polished stage 2 head with a stock car cam a 205block bottom end with static balanced conrods (so not properly balanced) and a silly light flywheel.
great fun easy engine to work on and easy and cheap to tune / fix
also another thing to bare in mind the 2.0 is a non interference engine so when the cambelt goes it wont bend a valve ... but the 1.6 will

Search for member Jammzr, he's got an HC with a Pinto under the bonnet......mostly found over on autoshite or OJC these days I think.

Nice one guys, thanks. It's a HC, and no, power and the 1256 viva are not good bed fellows. It might not be yet for a little bit as I've spent so much on the current motor. I'l check out your threads and see what you guys have done. Nightmares - how is the pinto for lining up to engine mounts, gear stick hole ect. also take you made a custom prop? I'll check out your tread.

Its also an option I may be going for if I cant get a 2.3. check out Tailslides thread on his viva, he put some pics up so I could have a look. looks an easy conversion to me tbh! Saw that sierra, I thought someone was having a laugh! Btw the gear lever comes though 5.5 inches further back so you have to move the handbrake lever around (thanks Tailslide!) His pics explain anyway

2.0 pinto goes into viva via x flow mounts. my old one, aka jammzers one, with said pinto in. only real problem is ex. fanimold and steering coloumn. think an rs2000 cast one will sort that tho...

I know it probably gets said in every engine swap ideas thread, but have you considered the good old 2.0 Zetec. Stick it on standard mondeo management and youll see 130+bhp easy whilst retaining some sort of fuel economy.

Speaking from my experience of Sierras, I can say that the 2 litre is much better on fuel than the 1600. If you're gonna put one in, it's the same amount of work to put the 1600 in as the 2 litre, so you might as well put the 2 litre in in the first place. If you really want a 1600, use a crossflow or CVH to save weight. There was a Magnum in the old Retro Cars with a Cossie motor in it so you know it'll fit. Should make a nice car.

The banger boys have developed cheap plug and play ECUs, looms plus manifolds to convert zetecs to carbs. Easy peasy.

I'm sure I read somewhere that the Type 9 box is about the same physical size as the Viva one, so the trans tunnel merely needs a bit of 'adjustment' with a 4lb 'traveller spanner'.

Coggers has a manta engine in his Firenza, Carmad is fitting a police spec v6 to his and I've got a fiat twincam in the Magnum - all food for thought for you
