If I was you I won't let the wife or the kids get in a polo as they lack in the brakes deptartment some what. I've never noticed that. As it happens I was driving my dad's one earlier today so I have a recent comparison. Like many older cars it needs a firm foot, but it stops as I'd expect.

The brakes are good enough as long as it's all in good condition, and I wouldn't worry about taking your nearest and dearest out in one - they are very very strong, and crash well. Back in '95 a mate of mine rolled a breadvan end over end on the motorway...not a scratch (on him) ;D

Hi. We've had a mark II polo breadvan in the family for nearly 20 years, and i've been driving it for 7. Does long journeys no probs (Oxford to cornwall). Not really fast, though only a one litre. Last year i bought another one and dropped a1.3 in, easy peasy. They really are a dream to work on (except for your usual rusty bolts!). I did drop mine and put alloys on and i came up against a few problems you may be interested in. 1st, it was a breadvan so had the funny rear arches, therefore if your going for excessive lowering, you'll have to make sure the wheels sit inside the arches. I had my rear arches rolled and have got 6J wheels on, and its quite a squeeze there. This could be alleviated with small wheels and low profiles, so they could stick out the side. Also beware of rubbing of the tyres on the springs at the back too. Otherwise, i had absolutelty no problems with it. Front sus was a doddle to do, got it done in a few hours, and it was my first time. As people say, the brakes are a bit rubbish compared to todays standard, but i'v driven with 4 adult in the car, and havent crashed yet!
As regards engine, you don't need anyhthing too powerful as its super light. But a GT to start with would drop in, once you had wired the ECU in, or the G40 is good fun too. Thats my next project. If your not in a rush, you can convert the engines as the mk2f and mk2 blocks and head are all the same, even on the different sizes as its he throw and piston dish that make up the increased size. In fact, the early mark 3 golfs had the same engine as the 1.3 polos.
Hope this helps. But i would seriously recomend getting one, theres something about those little round headlamps!

You've convinced me but I've just had a look at the state of my bank account. Anyone got a free polo kicking around?
