You can get yourself over to Bures pit, not green laning but some pretty cool stuff for 4x4s! They run a few events each month on Sunday. I've been a few times and even have my own dedicated Pit Rangie (though I've only been to the pit once in the Rangies, the other time with my Defender)... this is rob0r's rangie in the dirt-

Be wary. Lots of councils are cracking down on green laning and many lanes are shut. Some counties have closed pretty much everything.

If the gate is open and it's marked on an OS map, assuming no other signs etc, is it safe to assume we're allowed to drive down it?

Theres two land rovers with raised suspension, snorkels and huge sump guards that i see around witham and braintree a lot. Tend to see them heading towards stansted up the A120 a lot so i think theres somewhere up there... though they look as though they're built for a bit more than just green laning.

Be wary. Lots of councils are cracking down on green laning and many lanes are shut. Some counties have closed pretty much everything. normally??!! if a council close a byway or public rights off way.. thay either.. :put up a small!! sign saying so..lamanted A4 headed letter fixed to a fence post.. and thats it!!! or thay will stick a bluming great big rock or something so theres no way your getting down there!!! but!! (and i know this is going to sound silly) there is a group off out doorers that don't like the idea off byways being used by motorized vehicles.. and have heard story's off them putting stuff across a track so you can walk! around it, but not drive round it.. OK for the bike laners.. but no good for the 4x4's.. but thay got around this by a lane having a wire tied between 2 trees!!! at chest hight!! think what that would do for some one on a bike!! motor or pedel!! best thing to do is get the most up to date OS land ranger(the orange ones) and look on there.. if its closed.. it want be show on there.. and even if it show that it is open.. the sign say closed(if it is) will soon stop you... have fun mate...I'm off now for a weekend laning in sunny Cornwall

I would check on local 4x4 forums before going tbh. Green laning in cars is being killed off by councils and walkers etc. It can all get a bit nasty seemingly. Also, if a 4x4 group is campaigning to keep a lane open, they try to use it responsibly - the last thing they will want is someone inexperienced ripping up the ground or getting stuck, harming their cause.

Problem with OS maps is they are, obviously, retrospective. If you want to be dead sure, either talk to your local 4x4 club or visit the local council to see their Definitive Map (I believe some have them on line now, they were starting to do this when I left the UK) which should give the very latest status of any lanes.
It's a sorry state of affairs, but it pays to stay on the right side of things as the off-road heroes and ramblers have cocked it up for lots of folk.

I've been told there is only one official green lane left in West Sussex and that it's less than half a mile long. Not sure how true that is but I couldn't find any thing that I was obviously allowed to drive on when I had my series Land Rover.
