Top work on the gearbox conversion there!
And the head work looks good too, should be a lovely, lively drive with all that work in the In & Out departmets!

As requested, a little more detail on the inlet manifold work, hopefully explained through the medium of interpretive dance photos Original standard Vitesse manifold Modified Saloon manifold, bored out to 1 3/4", obstructive runner machined out and blended Comparison of the old and new together And with a stupid lumpy race cam and a set of freshly won CD175's it should breath very well indeed

A bit more progress. Kinda. Spent the last 2 nights finishing off the head work. This involved a little polishing; And a little grinding to produce 3 angle seats to improve flow as much as possible;

Why Strommys MrSpeedy? Wouldnt SU's be better?
Did you read Mr Vizards triumph tuning book? It has some good info on porting the 6 pot.

Mdh; Usually I am an SU kinda guy, but the Strombergs should give a little more under bonnet clearance as things get a little tight under the Vitesse bonnet. I would rather have used the later 2500s saloon long runner manifold lwith twin HS6's but they wouldn't fit without chopping the bonnet up ! Not got Vizards' book. I'm working from a combination of Chris Witor, Kas Kastners' competion manual and general tuning techniques. (basically i'm making it up as I go along !! lol) These turned up in the post today;

Should go well!
I had HS6's on my Vitesse and it revved like crazy.

I'm hoping it goes very well !! lol I'm kinda aiming at the 150bhp mark, and with all the goodies, i reckon i should make it. (My secret weapon is an extremely lumpy cam) Anyways, Tonight i have mostly been doing a dummy assembly run, so i can measure piston heights ready for machining the pistons to equalise them and to plane the block for compression height or 'Decking' as some people call it. Block and crank reunited for the first time in 2 years; Measuring piston heights;

How does the carb throttle linkage work on those carbs? looks like you have two left hand carbs to me...

I shall bear that in mind MDH incase it all goes tits up with the CDs'. Tonight I am mostly decking my block ; 0.030" to come off the block to leave the pistons dead level with the top face. Last night I skimmed the pistons to equalise them, however, with 0.008" difference between them i didn't think they were to bad tbh. But not as good as they are now ! lol

Yes, it is my Bridgeport.
I'm very lucky that I run my own buisness with my Dad, restoring vintage diesel engines and have our own full machine shop facilities !

When linking up the carbs you only really need one choke mechanism - provided that the manifold has a link pipe. It'll run a bit rough when cold, but then it will anyway with a very lumpy camshaft. Two is obviously better, though.
Is it wise to have the pistons entirely flush with the face of the block? I realise that it'll get lots of compression, but the rods tend to stretch a little at high speed, so the piston could contact the squish areas of the head - someone had an Imp engine with the pistons about 5 thou down the bores, and he cracked a piston when it touched the head at high revs. IIRC, He now recommends at least 7 thou below deck height.
I'll check to see what numbers he actually posted - that's just from memory.
EDIT - the piston that broke was between 5 and 6 thou down the bore. He's now running new pistons at 7 thou down with no trouble.

Awesome! Do you have a decent lathe too?
Why did you paint your block pink though?

jrevillug - the pistons will be flush but the head gasket is 40 thou so that'll be plenty of clearance! mdh - yh, i got a pretty decent lathe. I'll be doing my wheels on it soon. Also got sand blaster, radial drill, 3 column drill, plasma, 500 amp tig set, mig, etc etc. You get the picture I'm sure. And it's not pink, it's red ! Honest !
