Not at all, just read this through and was about to say tyre's. Had this a few times at work and having replaced both rear bearings noise was still the same, customer insisted noise was not there before accident Somethimes a shunt highlights your senses. In the end had to send car to main dealer for written conformation it was as i said tyre noise. Dealer stated uneaven wear on the tyres and non dealer specified. This week had same noise on a focus and low and behold tyre's have gone out of shape. Maybe if it's been standing during the hot weather or they are old they have egged slightly? ;D

Interesting - have another set of wheels with brand new rubber, so will fit them at the weekend & see how it goes. Certainly got nothing to lose by trying this ;D
Btw, the tyres are Avons and less than a year old. Fronts do have uneven tyre wear though due to camber - not normally an issue with the narrow rubber that Amazons usually have!
Thanks chaps!

My money's on a shagged wheel bearing or those funny slotmag'd tyres of yours ;D with a bleb on one of the carcasses. Lob the old wheels and check for vertical play whilst on teh jack. I'll plump for the former because my mate's Octavia is making exactly the same noise as you describe, and it turned out to be the wheel bearing. He smashes it up and down kerbs and generally drives like a taxi ist (i.e. 100 mph, 'YEAH LUV, GORR A HANDSFREE INNIT'). Can you not drive down the road and get someone to video it on a camera \ camera phone? Give us an indication of when the noise definitely occurs? Then we can all listen to it and diagnose it better. I've found that buggered engine mounts just make the car an to launch hard.

I've found that buggered engine mounts just make the car an to launch hard. Indeed - not smooth at all. It's not the tyres. Currently running on 4 space saver spare wheels* & sounds just like it did before *that's what the factory wheels look like compared to the Ansens

Had to separate the prop again as realised that I hadn't aligned the UJ yokes correctly. In the process, discovered a few other issues - return spring for the (hydraulic) clutch arm had broken its end off (pulled a coil straight and bent it around as a temporary fix until I get a replacement) & I can feel & hear play in the front UJ. So a few other things to sort out still.... It's possible that the noise is that UJ but we'll see.

Been told elsewhere that it's worth splatting the suspected UJ with plenty of WD40 to see if that shuts it up, & thus forces a confession. This is all getting quite tedious though. However I am getting quite good at removing the propshaft quickly, but not sure when I'm next going to have the chance to do anything.
Btw, is it really a specialist job to replace the spider in a UJ? I was under the impression that it was possible to do this at home. The prop itself isn't out of balance.

Seth kindly had a look at the car last week, and checked out a few things. also showed me how to check the wheel bearings (i.e. what's normal, what's not). He also confirmed my suspicions about the front UJ. Many thanks for your help! As of this evening, the propshaft is out, and tomorrow will be taken to a specialist to replace all the UJs (silly not to do them all whilst it's out) and balance it up again. Regarding wheel bearings, Seth identified that the front left had some play. There wasn't time then to check the rears, but this evening with the car jacked up so I could remove the prop, I checked the rears, and the rear right is noisy. I suspect that it may be the actual cause of the noise,a nd that everything else that has been found might not have been audible, but still good to sort things out. The wheel bearing is a specialist job, but I hopefully will be able to find someone reliable to look at that. In the meantime, whilst waiting for the prop, I shall also be changing the engine mounts.

All is now fixed! The right hand rear and left hand front wheel bearings were knackered (the other two were ok, but were replaced anyway). Not sure which one was actually making the noise, but I guess that if both were noisy, that could expain why there was no difference when cornering. The bearing face on the section that goes on the halfshaft was especially icky - gory pic to follow. Given the sort of tools needed to get everything out and then back in place properly, I didn't do the bearings myself as that was beyond my mechanical ability, so entrusted the car to Lance & Mark at the Romance of Rust, as they know Amazons very well, and are very familar with my car in particular! The front UJ was also starting to sieze in the front yoke, so the propshaft has been fully reconditioned too (new UJs, new front yoke and balanced) by Propshaft Services in Feltham, near Heathrow, whom I can highly recommend ( a big thank you to Seth for recommending them to me!); in particular their customer service is excellent. Thank you to all for advice etc!

Great news I did my prop myself last week and it was a nightmare with almost the right tools, enough tools to make some tools, and to boot I broke my vice doing the job. Probably just as well you spotted the bearings when you did. Many years ago I had one break up on me and the wheel came off!!!

Couldn't help but notice the bearing! Despite the UJ, the propshaft was actually quiet, probably because it was the one on the back of the gearbox, and the propshaft is then supported further back by the centre bearing which is housed in a rubber cradle. I reckon that was the lucky find

Cheers Dean ;D I'm glad to say that it's back to its usual self now Finally, the rear inner bearing cage pic, as promised: Mmm - nice. No wonder it was slightly noisy! Jury is still out as to whether this was due to old age (& old grease) and / or the phat wheelz, but the Ansens are off for a while now anyway to be refurbed properly, and to have some centre caps sorted out. Hopefully in time for next summer
