Who said I bought the wrong covers... I have a slide hammer (in fact I have managed to acquire two) and also just happen to have a stud welder sitting on the shelf... slide hammer is too crude a tool to get the profile right however, so I will need to hammer and dolly it and I don't want to have to take the rear side window crank assembly out. Looks like a pig to refit.

my problem is I have a compound curve shape to reform. Its easy enough to do if you can get to both sides. Which I can't. So I will have a little more fun to make it all right.

OK, I have had the first shot at the damaged panel. Its a toughie. The problem being that there is a sharp crease down the panel in a place where its hard to get around the back. Also the shape of the panel is not an easy fix. Here's the damaged side: and here's the good side: You see the swage which runs into the wheel arch which is completely flattened out on the driver side... Hmm.... The idea was to slide hammer it roughly into shape and work it from there. So to weld the studs to the panel means stripping the paint and I was ignoring how far into the door the crease also runs Welded up the studs, or this is about half of them maybe. The thing looks like a hedgehog in play LOL Heres a tip. I like to try prevent damage to the face of panel hammers by putting a couple of layers of masking tape on them, especially when some serious whacking is required. about 3 hours of cussing and sweating (no really, its almost "hot" today) and I have a panel which is still a mess and some odd aches. I'm getting too old for this. I'm going to look into the options to replace the afflicted part of the panel. I am beginging to doubt I will get a satisfactory repair this way. I've had good results panel beating in the past, but the steel on the Fury is thicker than what I have worked before, the damage is old and tricky... its against me. I could do a lot worse than weld in a repair section I think.

Gotta say that's a b*tch of a panel to straighten and get looking right - all those swage lines and curves... nightmare! Can you get repair panels for these, or will you need to get a bit chopped out of one Stateside? The door looks way easier.

trying to find that out now. I suspect its a case of finding a rust-free donor to chop a bit out of.

Are you for getting the motor from real steel? Big blocks with curse word brakes is what America is all about. Freedom, hell yeah, etc.

They don't list them on their list of available engines and never got back to my email. I have another potential source for one.

big block fell though However I can concentrate on the body and other things in the mean time. I have just today ordered the driver's side floor pan from Rock Auto with a warning that these are out of stock items and are subject to a delay on getting them in. We'll see how long it takes to come in. then we'll see how long it takes me to fit it...

I think (and hope) not. Opinion is that the arches will accomodate them no probs so long as I don't go too crazy with baloon tyres.
I also have a line on an even bigger pair of rears a chap I know has bought and found they don't fit his car.

I'm in the replace that bit as it's too complicated to bring back to a decent standard corner Akku. Hopefully you can get a replacement section (or panel) as the US spares supply always seems to have it stocked somewhere.... Good luck

Ku thinks the best thing is to get behind it to beat it out. Plan is to use a slide hammer to pull the worst out from the outside then get a suitable dolly in the back and beat it right from the front face. and what Ku forgets is that there is going to be a whole load of junk in the way for the wind down windows etc. So getting in from behind may be tricky, as Mrs Ku often says. I reckon I'll not get a dolly in but I should be able to reach with a large spoon. If you're going to get the welder out anyway, wouldn't it be easier (& possibly neater) to cut away some of this inner structure in order to get decent access to the back of the panel, and then weld it back in afterwards?

maybe, but I'm loath to mess with virgin, non-rusty sheet metal, you know? Such a novelty to have a car with such a low rust content... seems wrong to be cutting it about. The owners forum for these says stick with beating it. There is no aftermarket panel and this is famous rust spot for them so getting a cut out panel off a car which isn't rusty would be a mission.
Got an email off Rock to say my floor has been shipped. Should be here for the weekend I think!
