thinking about it, seeing as capris have a reasonable amount of motorsport heritage, there should be a fair number of lightweight parts going for reasonable cash no? fibreglass boot and bonnet would knock quite a few off good thing to do would be get it weighed at the local weighbridge and then you know where you are looking at that pic...... sidetrims? cant you get dip/full single headlights? got any under bonnet / interior pics?

From your answers:
Goal: 1000kg
Restricting parameters: Not stated, except a general reluctance to outlay cash. Is this to be road-legal? Is it to be track-only? Is it to be a 1-passenger, 2-passenger, or 4 passenger car? Is it to adhere to a racing body or track-day set of regs?
Happy to help with concrete suggestions, but still swimming in goo as to understanding the project, mate. (I swim in goo a lot, so no problem with using a goo snorkel.)

Heh norm, for specifics I don't mind outlaying cash further down the line it's just for now stuff like brakes, suspension, getting it road legal and a bigger engine are eating up all the reserves.
Road legal - yes. I'm pretty hard core in terms of creature comforts so as long as it's road legal whatever can go will. 1 passenger car for the most with the passenger seat being removed for track stuff. No regs to adhere to - just for fun.

cut out the sheet that seperates the passenger compartment from the boot, if a capri has one?
I've seen people cut out their boot floor, don't know if this is road legal or not.
also cut out the bracing on the underside of the bonnet and boot lid, yeah you will have a floppy bonnet but should save a few kg's

Ditch the brakes, big weight saving. I'm sure they sell those press things in Machine Mart, they're just two pieces, they had them on Discovery Shed program not too long ago.

24v? hopefully not a cossy as they weigh even more don't they?
you'd be best going zetec or similar, duratec for a good saving, probably about 50kgs lighter than your pinto.
theres a thread in the sticky at the top of the board about weight saving. roof lining etc. can be taken out, fibreglass bonnet, boot, wings? when you get a cage chop the entire door innards out.

Yeah i know the 24v is a heavy lump but it's the best bang per buck for these things and the quickest way to double the power.

Yeah I know the 24v is a heavy lump but it's the best bang per buck for these things and the quickest way to double the power. to right, having had one in the cortina and been suprised how fast it really was in everyday use, they are brilliant road car engines, lots of torque everywhere, easily worth the weight penalty in a road car, i'd have one over a similar powered turbo or tuned 4 pot anyday.

Loving this, partly because I've been doing it to an old E34 beemer myself. Click on the link in my sig and visit 'Project Bratwurst'. My car has raised up almost two and a half inches (60mm) on the standard springs!

stick on number plates that'll save a few lb's, locks, door handles, door cards, etc go mini style with a piece of string or wire fibre glass single skinned panels (non structural obv) light weight wheels and tyres, cut off all the little lugs and joints that arfen't going to be needed, dash mounts, grill mounts bumper mounts etc. Side exit exhaust save a length or two of pipe. Lose those rubbing strips as well!! I know some of those may sound rediculous (some are) but ive seen them done and if you are willing to put up with the inconvenience then it could inch you closer to the ton mark.

as someone who removed pretty much everything from inside a capri to make it light then filled it up with 2 tonnes of curse word for an extended road trip (Mongolia - what was I thinking???): here's some of what I learnt as food for thought (but not given as advice or anything as I am hopelessly inept and a mechanical idiot):
Plexi glass rear window: saved a lot of weight but leaks like a sieve and makes rear vision poor at best ( distortions) and non existent in the wet - wasn't a problem for our trip though as we couldn't see past the trailer anyway.
Plexi glass side and c-windows : didn't actually fit them - but i suspect vision, watertightness and function will also be severely compromised.
Fibreglass bonnet with competition springs and fibreglass tailgate without lock/wipers etc on a parachute cord type release: definitely lighter, looked cool (especially cossie vents and ducts and whale tail - if you like that sort of thing) but not exactly mega durable, both fit really badly, both leak like a sieve (again) and make cabin really noisy.
Stripped out interior including removing bitumen: really good idea if winter rallies in the arctic are planned - other than that it is like driving inside a Dutch oven - the heat from the floor pan, bulkhead and transmission tunnel and exposed bolts like seatbealt mountings actually burnt unprotected skin! also increased noise! a lot!
Removed headlining. Now very noisy roof when rains, also head keeps banging on bits of metal (painful).
Sunroof: removed all mechanism to 'improve', now can't fix and is bolted shut. and rattles. and leaks. It used to work. Now it doesn't. curse word!
So in summation I have learned that for 3 laps of a track against the clock stripping out everything is a start - but only a start - if you want really light you need to go competition and that means big money. For 3 laps of the track on a budget - the question you have to ask yourself is will the power to weight ratio improve enough to justify the compromises in functionality as a road car? That's a matter of personal choice and if it is a track day car only - well, maybe. But for everything else, if you still need the Capri to perform as an effective and functional road car for anything other than blatting around a track, better off leaving it more or less alone ... take out the spare seats, jack, and spare wheel for the lap, then put it back in to drive home. There are probably other ways of shaving a few tenths off a lap or quarter mile time more effectively than drilling holes or scraping off bitumen (plus it is really hard work!).
In short, my lesson learnt is that the only effective weight reduction is people reduction. who's for the retro ride diet then?

hey smiler, i think what you did (all the hard hard work) on Bratty for the specific purpose of the £999 challenge was well worth doing and well executed ... but I was referring to my own efforts to lighten my capri - which I achieved, but at the cost of functionality - but then again, it still functioned well enough to carry three guys 6325 miles across europe and back in 4 weeks - it's just that it could have been a bit more comfortable! and quiet .. and weather proof ;D
