What a cracker - I love series 1 XJ's, the "flatter" front end looks much better than the later model.
2.8 and manual box is a rare combination. If I remember correctly Jaguar dumped the 2.8 because it was prone to suffering valve problems.
A really nice car!

The XKR had the V8 supercharged which had a bit more poke at 370hp.
This is from a 1997 XJR-6 (which is the supercharged version of the X300 saloon). Slightly less powerful at 326hp, but a reasonable upgrade from the 2.8's 140hp..

I'd say keep it nice and high - make it look as stock as possible. Would be a nice suprise for people on the motorway/traffic lights

2.8 and manual box is a rare combination. If I remember correctly Jaguar dumped the 2.8 because it was prone to suffering valve problems. A really nice car! Thanks! The manual is a lot less rare in the 28's as they were woefully underpowered for the size of the car 4.2 manuals are difficult to find though, and command a really high price. The 2.8 had a habit of eating it's pistons, I thought I'd got away with it, but earlier in this thread you'll see that I wasn't that fortunate! I love my series 1, and even though I'm commuting in a series 3, I miss the old beast. That's the main reason why I'm making my ideal XJ6 out of it. I don't think I'll ever get rid of it.

A little update on progress: The XJS was stripped and disposed of fairly quickly. Some bits I hoped would fit didn't due to being damaged, corroded, or just wrong shaped. I lost the rack, and the front subframe was corroded beyond use. I will be sticking with the Series 1's own suspension as a result, but I'm going to get the later springs to drop it a little, and the roll bar and shocks will be uprated to suit. Jag myth busting Part 1 -
1. The engine mounting towers on the XJ subrame are interchangeable between XJS and XJ6. Bolt holes exist for both.
2. Engine mounts on the engines themselves are interchangeable between AJ6, and AJ16S.I got the engine bolted in properly, and kept the rear in place with a support beam. I then had to get the manual flywheel on in place of the flexplate. The mounting plate behind this is different and has to be changed. The AJ6 has a separate crank seal and housing, the AJ16 is integral with the mounting plate. Jag myth busting Part 2 -
1. Despite one being separate, and one being integral, AJ6 and AJ16 rear crank seals are compatible. Bolt spacings are identical but you have to change the entire set up from one to the other. After a small battle with stubborn dowels, the old plate is off, and the manual plate and flywheel are in. I need some new bolts and a bit of threadlock, and the clutch and 5 speed box will be installed in the next couple of days. Cooling was a nightmare to figure out, but the intercooler pump, heater piping, and routing for the intercooler radiator are in place. I'm just waiting for the intercooler radiator to arrive before I can start fitting the electric fans in the gap I have left! Vacuum for the brakes has used some of the stainless tubing scavenged from the XJS air con system, running across the bracing bars. It looks good, and didn't need bending, so its all win! I've also managed to acquire the correct ECU for the car, which is part LNA1410HD/5 for the supercharger cars; despite some online muppets trying to sell me 3.2/3.6/4.0 normal aspirated items as "they're all the same." I have stripped out the old two part item with the centre bearing, with the intention of replacing it with the XJS one piece item after having it lengthened. I can't get the prop lengthened until I have the gearbox in as I don't know the final length, but it should be in the region of 4 - 6". 20 days to go to have it running or I lose a bet with my little brother... ;D Regards Rich

So far this is the car of the year. You need to keep it looking stock on the same tyres for OMG roundabout terror.
What sort of weight are in these compared to the X300 the engine came out?

Definitely on the original steelies with the hubcaps!
Bearing in mind that the S1 SWB is already slightly lighter than the X300, with the new engine and gearbox in, it should be close on 300 kg lighter. That should bring it down to a fighting weight of just under 1500kg. I'm going to have it weighed when its done just to find out.
I've been thinking of colour choices lately... I like the white but it's a pain to keep clean and tidy, also it is kind of bland.
As it needs a repaint I'm very tempted by dark green (Metallic Sherwood Green), or dark blue (Cobalt Metallic).

It depends on your interior. Black would go with green, but a dark blue/ navy interior will look gret with dark blue. Also give a thought to light blue metallic (exp: Zircon), very understated.

The interior is nothing to shout about, so I'm not worried if I had to change it to suit the new colour. I do like the dark blue though.
I'll have a ponder over it when I'm a little closer to doing the bodywork.

Jag myth busting Part 1 -
...
2. Engine mounts on the engines themselves are interchangeable between AJ6, and AJ16S. Hi Rich, love this project and it's something I've thought about for years but not having the facilities, time nor money has just been a little dream. I look forward to watching this progress further over the course of the summer. In relation to your mythbusting; Can I just confirm that this means an AJ16S motor will fit onto the original mounts for my XJ40's 4.0 AJ6? If so, and as I'm moving into a new place soon (with a yard and a large garage ), then this is a conversion that I will seriously consider undertaking on my own, albeit somewhat newer and less desirable than yours, XJ.

In relation to your mythbusting; Can I just confirm that this means an AJ16S motor will fit onto the original mounts for my XJ40's 4.0 AJ6? Yes. Basically you're fitting the AJ16S bare to the complete mounting system for the earlier engine. Keep the original mount on the subframe, the rubber anti vibe mounts, and the metal mounts found on the side of the 4.0 AJ6. This setup will then bolt directly to the AJ16S, as there are threaded bosses on the engine to take them, once you remove that engine's own mounts. Regards Rich

Cheers guys.
I'm not as opposed to small block conversions as I once was; I had a couple of American friends show me well executed conversions and they're not bad. It's the half arsed ones with wires and pipes everywhere that annoy me...
There's one guy in New Zealand that built a 454 Twin Turbo V8 Series 1. That was a monster!
I'm held up at the moment while I get some bolts and things. I've said it before... I HATE waiting for couriers.
Regards
Rich

They have a lot of potential for power, but they're so stinking heavy, especially the BBC which usually comes with a TH400 transmission. I have a SBC and TH350 in my truck and I've tasted a nut several times when removing it and listening to my engine hoist creaking is disconcerting ... Putting an aluminium LS motor in would make more sense due to the weight. -Steve

Cant wait to see this running, i think we'll need a video your inspiring me to finally get started on mine, i was googling xj's the other day and saw an old advert on a classic car site for a supercharged xjc that had been turned into a track car, i couldnt find any more info about it though unfortunately. Good luck with it!
