My sump is done The idea was that the engineer would let me know when the bottom was chopped up so I could fit it on the engine and score along the oil pickup, but when I turned up he had already finished it. So I made a template to the size/shape of the sump and chopped up the pickup which is being welded today The custom steering linkage was fitted yesterday, very pleased with the outcome. It's a mixture of E21 and E34 UJs with a custom machined linkage bar. Getting the hang of splitting the UJs was fun! Then I cut off all the unused bracketry and satined blacked some of the engine bay, before and afters

Yes, it's standard unfortunately. RHD was an obvious after thought for BMW! The linkages often seize and they don't give a good pedal feel, a lot of people aim to bin them off completely. It works for now and thats the main thing for this car!

Rob Be careful with that pick-up mate, that monkey metal don't re-weld to clever. Mine fell apart when I put the sump on!! Best to use the steel version.

Any progress Rob?
Where did you get your steering linkage? Mine threw the towel in after just 9 months, so went back to OE, but it touches ever so slightly under load.

Simon, yeah the pickup didn't want to weld! I've found that E39 pickups are perfect for chopping up and using instead as they are all steel. I mocked up one but my welding was that bad that I'm starting from scratch again and getting a mate to modify another E39 pickup instead.
Mark, I was pushing to get this done for RRG but I was getting rushed and stressed with work commitments as well. I've picked up another E23 with MOT so I'm currently playing with that instead.
The steering bar was supplied by Jason and looks like tough steel, I can't imagine it breaking? The UJs are E21/E34 and E34/E21, E21 being on the rack and column, E34 being on the bar itself. What exactly gave up on yours?

It was the UJ's, as opposed to the bat itself. I'm wondering if the quick-rack was partially to blame or if the angle of the link just put too much strain at an odd angle or something? I just expected them to last longer than they did.
I'm thinking I might take the track e30 to RRG as I'd like to throw it up the hill, but if it's wet & miserable I'll take MIB.

What actually went wrong with the UJs? I used the needle bearings and caps from the E34 UJ when I built them as they were in 10x better condition, they didn't even need regreasing. The UJs are working at the same angle as before so I'm not sure really. My quick rack is nice and light in turning so I'm confident mine will be ok!

They simply developed so much play it was like driving a Routemaster. Checking back, one UJ was replaced after just a few weeks but the problems were back just a few months later. Right now I'm running a standard link but it touches ever so slightly when on lock, under load. I'll look into it more when the engine comes out and the bay & wiring get some attention.
