Additional Information:
I bought this car on impulse a few months ago and, to be fair, I haven't really done a lot with it. I have recently been offered a new job, which means I have to move out of my current place. This will probably mean that I will lose my storage, so the Carlton has to go.
Previously to me buying it, it was owned by a husband and wife from new. The husband passed it to the wife when he gave up driving. When the wife gave up driving a couple of years ago, she sold her house to the next-door neighbour with the Carlton still in the garage! I bought the car off the neighbour who listed it on ebay. As far as I can tell, it has been garaged all it's life, and the mileage of just over 61k is genuine! I have the original hand books and documents that verify this.
It's not a bad car, whilst it certainly isn't perfect, it is very original. At some point, someone has daubed a lot of underseal on the sills, front and rear valances, and around the suspension turrets. This, and the fact that the car has been garaged all its life, means that this car appears to have never needed any welding. It just doesn't look very pretty! Having said this, the bodywork is still holding up pretty well, the only area that is even thinking about going crispy is the offside suspension turret. But at the moment it is complete and there are no rot holes that I can find anywhere. The interior is complete (black velour) and is in excellent condition. It still has the original radio/cassette, although someone has kindly snapped off the front wing mounted ariel. There are a couple of scuffs to the plastic bumpers, and one or two minor dents and scratches, but there is nothing major to worry about on the body yet!
The engine is a 2.2 4-cylinder CIH engine, basically a stroked 2.0 as found in many Manta's and mk1 Cavaliers. It has Bosch LE fuel injection. These are pretty strong units, they are basically a 4-cylinder version of the 3.0 12v engine found in the Monza's & Senators. The engine in this one is pretty good, it pulls really well and sounds sweet, although the exhaust may need re-sealing on the downpipe.
The main problem with the car is the autobox. It is fitted with a GM180 3-speed auto, as fitted to many other GM cars in the 70's & 80's. At the moment, 3rd gear is slipping, and the gearbox is leaking fluid. I think the leak is coming from one of the rubber pipes linking the box to the cooler pipes, so that should be easily sorted. I'm told that these boxes have an adjustable 3rd gear brake band that will cure the slipping. This is a sump-off job, I have already got a couple of sump gaskets ready to sort it out. I have also got a spare gearbox which came out of a 2.0 Manta with just 25k on the clocks!! The spare box will come with the car as I have no use for it. If the weather improves, I will try and get underneath it and sort the leak and the slipping, but I simply haven't the time to change the gearbox yet, and lying in the snow isn't appealing!!
The other issue at the moment is a sticking starter motor. It sometimes takes a few attempts to get the starter to turn the engine over, but it always does start!! I have a spare starter motor which will be included. I refuse to change the starter until the old one completely gives up the ghost!
Other than the gearbox, the car is pretty much as it should be. I haven't driven it for about a month, and the battery has still enough charge to start the car. The exhaust looks fairly new, and is still shiny. It still has the original steels wheels with correct wheel trims on, I also have a set of 5 Carlton CD alloys which will come with the car, although the alloys need new tyres. I have a couple of reasonable tyres which I can chuck in as well.
Overall, it is a very original and quite rare car. Most Carlton mk2's have rotted away to nothing now. The few that do survive are mostly 1.8's and 2.0's, most of the 2.2's were used for Manta engine upgrades as it's a straight swap for a 2.0! It would be a shame to break this car for the engine, but if that's what someone wants to do then i'm not going to have an issue with it!
Car is located in Melton Mowbray should anyone want to have a look. If anyone is interested, then pm me and I will pm my mobile number.
Pictures. Sorry they are not great, with the fluid leaking I am reluctant to move it too far until the leak has been fixed!!
If anyone has any questions, please ask!!
