Be 100% sure to use the right fluid; the wrong type will kill it. BMW charge a fortune for it! John I've read a few guides and seen that they're very sensitive to the right fluid. I've also read that in some cases a fluid change can kill the box altogether if any contamination gets in there. Bearing that in mind, the fact I'll be doing under 3000 miles a year in it, and the fact it shifts perfectly now, I might leave it... I know BMW say 'sealed for life' and ZF say otherwise but I really don't want a £2.5k gearbox rebuild on my hands... I'm having the same dilemma about changing the fluid in mine and my dads 740s at the mo....kinda feel it must need doing ( as my audi coupes "sealed for life" box is shagged after 150k) but I've read the same things about wrecking them with a change.... I reckon that as long as the cooler and hoses are flushed as well, it should be ok as thats where the curse word tends to accumulate

I reckon that as long as the cooler and hoses are flushed as well, it should be ok as thats where the curse word tends to accumulate A complex mechanism like a modern autobox needs fresh oil, in my opinion. The reason they are "lifetime" is to reduce first-buyer service costs, and hence the new vehicle lease contract rates, to get more sales. Just the same as new, modern cars having no running-in oil change after 1000 miles. Serious false economy in my opinion. I think post-oil-change gearbox failures are most likely to be: 1. box was knackered anyway, someone hoping a fluid change will fix it 2. mistakes... wrong fluid, seals/filters/gaskets not done right, etc I'm all for DIY work on cars, but this is one job I trust to a good auto speciaslist. They will get the right fluid wholesale, have the kit to pump the fresh fluid right through the torque converter & cooler, and they'll run the fault codes and know what to looks for with any causes for concern. When I checked, the cost (approx £100 - £120) was about the same as buying the fluids and parts, retail, from BMW. My 540i (112k miles at the time) was driving fine, no noticeable faults. But it was smoother and more responsive after the AFT change. Now at 132k and still feels in brilliant health. John

Always wanted one of these. Read a design critique a number of years which declared this the best saloon design of all time; I find that very hard to dispute. Cracking car

Cracking car Thank you very much, I'd like to read that critique. The size of it makes it an imposing design, but looking round it there are more than a few similarities with Mercs and Audis of the day In other news, I've bought wheels for it - I'm off to Chester tonight to pick em up
