Well, its torque that kills gearboxes rather than power.
Luckily 16v engines only make power at the top end. I imagine a grunty low down power engine would shatter the gearbox in seconds, but used sensibly, I'm hoping its not too bad.
You can smash the gearbox with a stock engine with lots of repeated full throttle launches!

Right, had today free so got the K-Rapid (or Skover) done! First little drive was simple reversing out of the garage into the cul de sac and turning it round, but I found that everytime i set off forwards, the trigger wheel just touched the cross membe, due to the soggy engine mounts. Cue, quickly removing the crossmember, chopping out what touches, inverting the cut out bit and welding back in. After that it was just a case of going through everything, mounting the megajot behind the rear seats and wiring it up. The megajolt unit came from the world famous JikovRon, and had a map for the fabia engine he ran in his Estelle. I'm having trouble connecting to the unit with a usb - serial adapter so am currently running the same map, which seems to run very well, except the rev limit is capped at 5500rpm instead of about 7000rpm. Even so, to say that I am flying by the seat of my pants regarding ignition map and carburation, it does run very well. The best way to describe it, is like modernising the car. You have the quirky old school looks and character, powered by a modern, torquey, revvy power plant, that just goes and goes. The first true maiden voyage was a 65 mile blat over to North Lincolnshire, where it sat at motorway speeds easily, with a lot left in reserve. (h of mph is easily attainable, er, in theory.....) ;D All in all I'm very pleased! A bit of fettling to fully complete (ignition map, filters for the carbs, shorten the tailpipe, rig up a choke cable etc etc), but generally, its ready to go

Pictures of the install: Excessively long tailpipe (will be chopped down!) Engine bay shot. Doesn't look out of place... Other side And it does this rather a lot, and very easily....

Yeah, they are geared nicely, however, the speedo is a bit optimistic. 100 on the clock reads about 92 on my satnav. H (or MPH) is about 116.......

It's supporting the water pipe going the back of the engine. Could do with a sky hook really

Now that a 1000 miles have been completed in the K-Rapid, I thought it best to get some reliable performance figures, monitoring a/f ratio, advance performance etc, so I booked it into a local Rolling Road. T'was a bit chilly this morning when I set off! And on route, we broke into old age! (Ignore the speedo, we all know Skoda speedo's are optimistic!) Anyway, found the Rolling Road easily enough (I went to JP Autotechnics in Sheffield, not on recommendation, they were just the nearest). A great bunch of guys, very friendly and enthusiastic about the K-Rapid, which is nice! They soon had it strapped down:- I told them to aim for 7000rpm, and the manager whapped his probe in my exhaust pipe and monitored the a/f ratio through out the rev band. The noise towards the top end was amazing, but very loud! But after about 5500rpm the note changed slightly flat. I had suspicions of it running lean at the top end, and the operator confirmed that the carbs would need bigger main jets to correct the fuelling. The Rover engines make about 109bhp standard, and I was expecting around the same. However, we have:- Initially I thought it said 97bhp, but upon closer inspection, the German rolling road measures in kW, (1.36bhp = 1 kW), giving a measured power figure of 131 bhp! Cant complain at that! So I paid the man (£48) and left very happy. Dyno figures can be provoked into reading high etc, but like I said, how it makes power and the fuelling across the range are a lot more interesting, pub dyno figures are simply dick measuring numbers tbh. Next jobs to complete are the fitting of new wheel centres, after loosing one in Bewl, and saving up for a respray to sort the very thin paintwork! Mechanically, I need to rejet the carbs (no biggy, jets are £2 each, about an hours work), change the cambelt and the oil (it's still running oil that was in it, in the Rover it came out of.... ).

I absolutely love this. My old Rapid was like trying to discipline a bad dog, needing to be taken by the scruff of the neck and shouted at a lot, but was pretty rewarding when treated in the right way - made driving it in town nearly impossible though.

Cabruration sorted now. Its now set with the idle screws 2 turns out, the needle circlip is on the bottom groove, with the washer under the clip and the mains drilled to 150.
Runs very well, in top gear it will pull from 1500 rpm, without hesitation or fluffing, all the way to 6000rpm +
Feels a lot better and torquey, and it felt good before!
Will bob it back on the dick measuring rollers if i get chance, but it feels pretty much spot on
