Lol,just researched this a bit,yes Rich its the one at Flambards. It wasn't called Flambards back then,it was the Cornish Aero Park right next to Culdrose.Purely a RNAS museum where as now it looks like a theme park with a couple of forgotten aircraft. I'm amazed that 30 years on its still there though ! yeap its still there(along with a concord mock up!) but only there because there built in to the interior of the building!! I worked there for 3/4 years.. back in the day when thay had 10+ aircraft there!! 1or 2 rather rare ones!! (one of only 3 complete scimitar and 1 Of only 2 AEW skyraiders!!! but the son took over from the old man.. and the aircraft theme was soon dropped!! no money in then! I think the nail in the coffin was when a visitor told use that one of the aircraft was moving??!! when we went up to see what thay were on about,we found the S1 buccaneer leaning to one side?! the undercarriage on the port side had corroded that bad it had broken and popped out the top side of the wing she was scrapped that winter.. and the rest of the aircraft sold of over the next 10years some have gone to better homes.which is always good.. just like your shack.. loved and looked after

PM me your details if you want to join in. I'll forward them to the guy that organises things. There's no active recruitment, but they are always looking for volunteers.
I'm not going to make it there this Thursday as I have to attend a funeral... I know where I'd rather be, but respects must be paid.
Regards,
Ric

I used to work on the griffon engine when I was in the RAF, but not in a Shackelton. In the Spitfire XIV or XIX, maybe? The last of those of those were in service in the THUM Flight until 1957. Then there's the BBMF, in more recent years. Okay, I'm curious... ;D Ric Way off the mark, .....................one of these

AMAZING!!!! I was shocked to see the blades appearing to flex that much, never really seen a propellor plane up close like that mind you! They don't flex. That's just how they look through the camera.

Awesome plane. You may already know but there is a derelict Shack at Long Marston - it was part of the collection that was going to be a museum there. Whilst I don't truly condone breaking and entering, you may be interested in the pics on 28 days later like this one: For more check out: www.28dayslater.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=42620Is that a Meteor in the background? Shame to see it sat rotting, awesome planes

Unfortunately the Shackleton wasn't one of them, but I think the Meteor made it out though!

Hi all, I spent yesterday (1st May) down at Coventry working on the Shackleton. To give you all a quick update... Work has continued since the January engine run at a good pace. Unfortunately after investigating the rough running, we have found damage to the camshafts on three engines. The oil has become contaminated and has attacked the chrome plating and allowed them to wear. We can only put this down to how long 963 was stood idle since her last run. The experts say this is a common occurrence. This means we have to do an oil change. There is 32.5 gallons in each engine... Also as a result we have a lot of repairs to do! There's two camshaft and set of rocker gear on each engine, and timing it all up if you replace it is a pain. Here's a few pictures from what was great day. If you live within a reaonable travelling distance and want to grab your spanners and join in, pm me. We're trying to get more people involved. Regards, Rich

Nail, meet head.... ;D That's more or less the idea. The Nimrod should be arriving on May 11th if Classic Flight's bid was successful. That's why we're working like hell to get '963 running and presentable! If you really want to play with a Shackleton, the one at RAF St Mawgan (Newquay airport) has a team that look after it. I'm sure they'd welcome new volunteers. Regards, Rich

I went to Cov airport a couple of years ago for a night flight on a DC3. The flight was cancelled as we taxied to the runway due to thick fog and resheduled for later on in the year. Prior to that Ive been up in a Rapide and I'm having a flight in a tiger moth later this year. Classic aircraft are my thing, see . Before the aborted DC3 flight we had been treated to a ground running of the shack's engines. The noise was unbelievable and torches of flames leapt from the huge exhausts. The night fog combined with the flames and noise made the whole experience very memorable. We still talk about how great it was even now. If anyone ever gets the opportunity to see one of these engine runs I really reccomend them. Simply superb! The voulenteers are very friendly and helpful. I had a guided tour of the Shackletons interior, its in great condition inside, almost as if it was de-comissioned yesterday. Have some "million rivets flying in close formation" pic action.. You're more than welcome to come again! We'll have her running again before long. That photo above, is a fun one. It's a well known shot, and the pilot was showing off. The two engines nearest the beach aren't running... ;D Regards, Ric
