I had to get a pair of tyres in a hurry for the Bond, after an order I placed on the internet for a pair of Avon's went wrong (a double whammy of me ordering the wrong size - duh! - and then the supplier sending the wrong size too!) So I went round to my local independent fitter who furnished me with a pair of Event tyres. I was a bit unsure because I'd never heard of them before and figured they were cheapo ditchfinders, but it was an emergency as the tyres on the car are 20-odd years old. Anyway, I found that Event Tyres is a Dutch firm part owned by Continental. Presumably they use Continental technology. I found a big list of budget tyre manufacturers along with the bigger companies which owns them. Interesting stuff, and brands which I'd written off as just cheap rubbish are actually re-branded top brand tyres. Have a look here. Might save a fellow RRer some money in the future if you're in the market for budget tyres.

Good list there BB! This kind of thing is horrifically common practice in many industries For instance, I sell heating pumps that are around £60+ VAT. There was some cheaper makes going for about £30+ VAT... low and behold, the expensive firm release their old (expensive) pump under a new name, painted a different colour... for £30 hahaha. When I spoke to their rep he told me that instead of making a 20-something % profit they make almost half but grab a chunk of the 'budget' market they didnt have before so overall are doing better for it! Most firms rely on not enough people finding out. Just like you can buy a New Skoda for a LOT less than its VW equivalent - when it's essentially the exact same car & quality. Paying for a name.

thats a very interesting list as i am a big fan of budgets !! but running event 205/40r17s i once had a crack forming on the inner sidewall of both my front tyres for the full circumference just as it meets the tread , and if you dug your fingernail in you could see cords , so beware mr benzboy..slightly off topic i know but i needed to let it out!!oh and yes i had done a trackday on em ,but still don't think they should have failed , and for the record there was about 5 mm left on eack tread!!

Good find, though I wouldn't say that being owned by a reputable company makes them reputable Personal experience always wins with me. The range of budget tyres sold by National are called Barums. The link you posted says they're also owned by Continental. Had a few sets of their tyres on a couple cars an have always been impressed by them for the price. I think they now call them 'mid range' to avoid scare mongerers who say any budget tyre is a ditchfinder.

Don't ass-ume that a wholly-owned subsidiary of a "name" brand is using the technology of the top offering nor simply a re-box of the same tire. HIGHLY unlikely.
There is a vast amount of sidewall data on any given DOT-approved tire. That right there is what you need to study.
If MB purchased, oh, say, Chrysler tomorrow, would you then conclude that all Chryslers are now Benz's? Oh, that's right! MB actually tried that, and it failed....

Good god! I just clicked on that list, it's a POS!
Without spending 2 seconds, here's 2 MAJOR f-ups on it.
1. BF Goodrich is NOT an American tire company. It is wholly owned by Michelin. Since 1988, OLDE snooze!
2. The list doesn't even have Michelin on it! It's only the world's largest or second largest tire company.
Let's find a better list.......

If MB purchased, oh, say, Chrysler tomorrow, would you then conclude that all Chryslers are now Benz's? Oh, that's right! MB actually tried that, and it failed.... I'd have thought that these big brand-owned budget tyres would be done in a similar manner to the Chrysler Crossfire - old MB platform (R129) re-skinned and re-sold under the Chrysler badge. I figured that if there is a large well-known manufacturer involved it'd make economical sense for them to use the old tyre moulds and re-badge them, as all the R&D costs have long been absorbed and it'd save costs on developing entirely new designs. Maybe I shouldn't assume that though. And I was a tiny bit skeptical about the age of the list seeing as Czechoslovakia is mentioned a few times, which hasn't existed since the Velvet Revolution of 1989. I had put that down to ignorance on the author's part though. I'll see how I get on with the tyres - I won't be driving hard anywhere, and they have to be better than what was on it (those tyres actually WERE from Czechoslovakia!) ;D

House of Kolor is owned by Valspar who make house paint. You cannot use their emulsion paint to get a kandy effect.
Just because a brand is owned by another company doesn't mean much transfers between the two.
Some budget tyres are pretty good. Some are better (in some circumstances) than some big brand name tyres.
Often these things take a little research. What is great on one car may suck on another. Especially on older vs. newer cars.
I'm personally feeling a little "meh" about Continental tyres. The set I put on the PT Cruiser seem to be wearing fast considering the driving style employed on it, and I have another pair where the reinforcing belts seem to have failed on them. Sport Contact Premium 2 as well, you know, the £350 a set stuff.

Nankang all the way for me. Ran them for years, stretched them stupid and gave them a lot of hammer. They cost very little, last decent and handle decent. Nothing outstanding, but you can rely on them "just working"
When I worked at 'frauds we had a lot of issues with the sidewalls falling to bits on Wanlis in about 8 months. Half a dozen sets back at least, including a set I my mate bought, and he checked the pressure regular, didn't hammer them or anything. Meh.

my favourite discussion topic; Budget tyres ;D
really good value for money over here is Hankook, i really like them; had terrible experience with some of the Chinese tyres on customer cars, though some of them are not so bad as their names suggest.... i used to be a huge Conti fan, but since they closed their tyre production in germany as they didn't make enough profit (they were still making profit, but not "enough") i don't have to buy a tire "engineered in germany" and built in africa ....
Michelin used to be good in the past, but todays tyres from them are mostly expensive with an oldfashioned profile and still a very good name....
over here the competition in the tyre business is very hard; so the price difference between a "cheap" and a "good" tyre is not so big...
The Passat has Falkens in 15" in summer, which are not bad really (and were the cheapest available in that size with a name you could pronounce); though the Hankook winter tyres in 195/60 14 are much much better to drive .... they feel better, they are more comfortable ....
On the transporter i have Hankook RA 14 summer tyres, which were the only ones with a proper car profile, most of the other tyres were having a transporter/Off road profile, which just isn't nice to drive on the Type 25... though i drove quite a lot of miles, they don't seem to wear at all....
