I've found Conti's sport contact to be one of the nicest handling tyres I've ever fitted to a car with the best feel and superb grip wet or dry, how ever they really did wear out quick, so much so that i was loathe to buy any others, that said i never did fit anything that made the car feel so tactile again (e36 318is)..
I had pirelli scorpions on the Range Rover and thought they were very good but got recommended Bridgstones by my tyre fitting monkey, they stung the wallet a bit at nearly £700list for the set but they absolutely transformed the car and are so far wearing extremely well, after 10k of hard work they look barely worn in..
The best budgets I've had have been GT's had these on a fe acrs and for the price they seem superb i think i paid £30 a corner for the ones on my B3 Passat and they lasted well and gripped superbly..
When i got my Scorpio estate it had a spanking new set of 'Austones' on it these were actually dangerous and i was glad i wore them bald in less than 10k of super slippy sideways action..
If you see these tyres offered run, run away!

The Internet, like all tools, if used improperly, can make a complete bo**cks of even the simplest jobs...

Surely they don't still make remoulds? I know someone who had a set of Kingpins on his car and one blew out on the motorway for now apparent reason, exactly the same thing happened to someone else, Kingpin again. Deffo go down as worst tyre in history in my book.
Had bad experiences with three Michelins (all three on one car failed) but they were quite old. Even so. Didn't expect that to happen.

I'm another big fan of Nankang NS2's, I've fitted them to the majority of my cars now and they are superb in both wet and dry, you'd have to be driving pretty terribly to get into a load of trouble, but then the same goes for a lot of tyres!! Really? I had the 165/55 version on the Polo and they were the only tyres i managed to get it to spin in the dry They were predictable, but predictably pretty rubbish tbh! The Khumo KU31s seem to get good writeups by everyone who uses them but i've never had a car that takes a tyre size they make!

I would also take a moment to extol the virtues of Hankook, Riken, Camac and Kleber, tyres I have used with some success in the past.
Regarding Austone, I have discovered I have a car with three of them on it. The car hasn't been driven on the road since mid 2005 yet the tyres are only now starting to crack. Brilliant, or just so hard a sidewall they don't split..?
And Uniroyals don't seem that bad either from the few that I've worn out on new cars. Wouldn't go out to buy them though.

Regarding Austone, I have discovered I have a car with three of them on it. The car hasn't been driven on the road since mid 2005 yet the tyres are only now starting to crack. Brilliant, or just so hard a sidewall they don't split..? Um, that comment seems a bit strange. Cracking in the sidewalls at only 4-5 years of age seems a very bad thing to me. The tyres on my bug were still absolutely fine after 9 years, 2 of which unused, and I've got Michelins which have had cars sitting still on them for decades without cracking.

I've used 205 50 16's & 225 50 16's and they've been fantastic, were the 165's stretched on the wide steels? My merc runs 235 40 18's which i'll be trying next, it has nexens on at the mo and to be fair they have been pretty good, although i suppose any tyre that wide with 1.7 tons on it will take some unsticking!!!!

I've got Nangkang NS2's on the Merc and they seem to be pretty good VFM tbh. It is a bit sketchy in the wet tho, but I put that down to lot's of neg rear camber and a low stiff ride I was told years ago when i put a set on my MKI golf GTi that Nangkang was owned by Yokohama, buyt dunno if that was/is true. Maxxis used to be very popular in go'kart racing ! (Dunno if it still is tho)
