Just picked up this nice old vw santana off ebay for £566 trouble is, I didn't check where it was located.. so I had a 4 hour train journey there and a 300 mile trip home in her on monday! She's a bit rusty round the edges, the interior is a bit faded and worn, and the wheels are a bit skinny, the lacquer is peeling in quite a few places, the paintwork is scratched and chipped all over... ..but she doesn't look too bad after a day cleaning and polishing and the 1.9 audi 5 pot motor sounds lovely and starts on the button (The mileage is also fairly low at 89k) This was supposed to be a cheap runaround to get me to my garage to work on my Cortina, but I think i'll be spending a bit of time on this one too. growing on me a bit :-) (these photos make the paint look much better than it is, polishing + evening light photos works wonders)

Yeah, she's been a bit neglected but I'm going to sort her out. was a bit less than I planned to spend, so I might add a few choice bits soon.. As i'm better with electrics than oily bits I'll probably treat her to a full service from my friendly local mechanic one thing I will be looking at myself is taking apart the dash, as for some reason there aren't any lights on the dash at night, making reading the speed and fuel rather difficult and/or exciting! the owner suggested it was likely to be the dimmer dial, but I also found a blown fuse in the ashtray, so maybe it's just that..? with the remaining cash I might have a browse of the local breakers and find some wheels that fill the arches a bit more, some 15" steels or perhaps some suitably 80's alloys if there's anything interesting there. seems to be the same fitting as a vw golf of similar vintage (4x100 bolts, +40 offset) might have to have a bit of a measure first though to make sure.. The car's already been lowered quite a bit and used to sit on alloys like this; rjmd.eu/etc/santana1.jpgbut the last owner pinched them for his mk1 scirocco. I think i'm going to keep it looking more retro though. I wonder what she'd look like on some old golf bbs wheels..? i'll have to have a go in photoshop..

another Santana on RR..
I was so tempted to get this one but couldnt justify it, check out my signature, link to mine in there..
Where are you located as it was about a 300 mile trip from me.. I'm nr Reading..
As to my santana, I'm running on MK2 Golf BBs RA's rims and they suit it really really well, 195/50/152 with an offset of 38 (which is the VW norm) still i think mine needs spacing out about and am considering some G60 steelies and getting htem banded for a lower offset + dish
Mines an 84 so has the added luxury of injection, but its an auto, still that 5 pot engine is awesome.
If you got any questions etc then let me know, I'm getting quite up to speed on all things Santana..

one thing I will be looking at myself is taking apart the dash, as for some reason there aren't any lights on the dash at night, making reading the speed and fuel rather difficult and/or exciting! the owner suggested it was likely to be the dimmer dial, but I also found a blown fuse in the ashtray, so maybe it's just that..? more than likely a bulb in the back of the speedo housing, the trim below the fan control pops off, revealing a couple of screws, also a couple more screws in front of speedo - pop them out and change the bulbs - i made th emistake of just changing the blown one, put it all back together and another went - so advice from em, change them all.. seems to be the same fitting as a vw golf of similar vintage (4x100 bolts, +40 offset) to keep it looking more retro though. I wonder what she'd look like on some old golf bbs wheels..? i'll have to have a go in photoshop.. yeah, sure are 4x100 - standard offset is 38 - I have the original wheels form mine going spare at the mo, and am also tempted to sell my BBS - to save the photoshop - here's a couple of pics original alloy wheels - with the BBS ra's that I'm running now..

ah, nice I'd possibly be interested in one set or the other. I've actually got one of the original alloys - the spare one's still there :-)
cheers for the info on the instrument lights. I'll have a poke around tomorrow.
got a few plans for the instruments. might see if i can get a spare unit to play around with. was thinking of removing the rather useless mpg dial and fitting in an small mp3 player there, and re-routing the controls and sd card slot to where the stereo should go.. see how adventurous I feel, and how much space is behind there..
also, yeah I'm not too far away from you, something like 30 miles, london sw14

sweet - good to know there's one local (ish)
I sometimes go to the ace cafe in mine so would be good to catch up there one day maybe..
the guy on UK passats breaking the estate is in sarf wales, he got it off here for silly money
I was thinking of going over for bits, but its a little too far for a few bits - about a 2.5 hour drive from me - which is a shame..
as to the rims, I like the BBS RA's on mine, so would rather keep em for now, eventually I'm thinking of some banded steelies..
the original alloys i got are a little tatty but have 4 very usable tyres, from memory 3 of them are like new - would have asked for £100 ono for them (cos of the rubber)

I imagine that its only the bulbs that have gone, its a fairly common thing Get genuine VW ones and they should last years (have found cheap ones don't fit or explode as you fit them )

Yup it was the dimmer / headlight switch working perfectly now the joint between the contacts and the resistance wire had popped apart I just had to solder it together and clean all the contact surfaces. works very smoothly now. Quite easy to pop apart the switch unit. Worth doing if it starts to flicker a little - my contacts were quite corroded inside, once cleaned and wd40'd worked perfectly

good job mate
little question, was it actually showing 5.09 on the clocks - reason is my clocks flicker, go blank, come up with random times, then every now n then show 5.09 regardless of times
weird or just a bizarre randon coincidence..
