I don't think a magnesium block will ever make it into production, mind, i might be wrong here, but I can't see that being a good thing in an engine bay fire. What could be easily controlled before, might just turn into one giant fireball. Urban Myth debunk time....fire thing will never happen Magnesium is used already in lots of Engine bay components, primarily Cam covers and Timing covers alternator housings, inlet manifolds and other non dimensionally critical components. Its light and stiff and easily die cast, so Ideal for mass production It is not dangerous in finished form, its the shavings or machining chips that are dangerous You could never get it hot enough in an engine bay fire to ignite a Cam cover or Front cover, let alone a Block. But machining it is easy to get the shavings to catch fire.  The BMW Mag Block is going in to production, as is the Audi  HTH Dom |

Pre-war, Renault was using magnesium for crank cases on aero engines, and I'm sure other manufacturers would have also been using it.

Hey! I used to play with R/C aircraft with 0.40 cu.in. (6.5 cc) motors in them too! Yay!  The smaller Cox motors, 0.049 cu.in., displace 0.8 cc. Some of the glow engines built for ducted fan R/C aircraft spin at over 25,000 rpm. Some of those for R/C cars (0.21 cu.in., 3.5 cc) spin at 35,000 rpm plus! Must get my old plane out again... I'm  |

The BMW Mag Block is going in to production, as is the Audi HTH Dom How come the worlds worst motorsport accident was caused by burning lumps of magnesium flying through the crowd from a mercedes at lemans at the 50s, although, the car was also going through the crowd. I beleive there is already magnesium in VW flat four blocks, a mate of mine was saying that when he was out in newzealand at a vw show they put engine blocks on the fires and they light the place up.... but u cant look of the fire for its too intense! Crazy. |

All the ones I had in mind are gone - deltic (a friend used to build the marine version. Superb engines!) - Merlin etc. So I'll just pimp my own cars engine  A poo picture, but all the rest aren't online. Saab 99 Turbo engine. A fairly close relative to the Dolly sprint engine - but Saab went a different way to gain the power. The Saab 99 started off with a Triumph built, Ricardo designed 1709cc engine. Overhead cam, iron block, alloy head. Waterpump, oil pump and dissy driven by a jackshaft. Opened out to 1850cc. Reworked by Saab to 1985cc, but also beefed up the bottom end somewhat (so much so it's the same design even today), realigned the headbolts so they're easy to remove. Quite a few other changes, but retained the jackshaft, and half a V8 appearance. Triumph created the superb 16v Sprint engine, while Saab continued with the 8v principle, but using Bosch D Jetronic and later K jetronic produced engines rated at 118bhp/123lb/ft in the 2 litre form. Then they went turbo power The first PRODUCTION turbocharged car - not special edition or special order. There were prior turbocharged cars of course From the K-jet 118bhp engine, they dropped the compression to 7.2:1, put an oil cooler on, put a fuel distributor from a 6cyl car and slapped a Garrett T3 on. Up goes the power to 145bhp, and up goes the torque to 174lb/ft. Previous turbo cars had the boost come in high up in the rev range - because if a smaller turbo was used it would overboost at higher RPMs. Saab overcame this by inventing the wastegate. 99 turbos and early 900 turbos had an external wastegate, then they changed to the cheaper (and more boring!) integral one. Anyway, rabbited on long enough, so I'll finish with a link to some pics of the 99 turbo rally car: www.tfd.chalmers.se/~burenius/rally/Drop the compression a bit more, wind the boost up to over 2 bar, slap on water injection (with a water tank the same size as the fuel tank ) and away you go. Well over 200bhp! Only the one major rally win though as Audi countered with the Quattro. Saab's small motorsport department hadn't nearly the budget to keep up to had to pull out. |

horribly unbalenced engine the V4, its a non symmetrical crank and causes no end of problems.

Do you work for the Sun or something Or News of the World You really don't do yourself any favours coming out with a Crock of sh*t like that The accident was not caused by burning magnesium as you state.... And I think far more people were Killed in that accident by a tonne of Burning car cartwheeling through the grandstand at well over 100mph than any Magnesium content adding to the flames.... it had a virtually full fuel load which ignited and sprayed everywhere when the tank ruptured. I think it show a lack of respect to trivialise the death of so many spectators in the worst Racing accident in history, just to make a (Massively incorrect) point To Finish this, Magnesium used in Blocks is not pure, it is alloyed and therefore much safer with respect to fire. Pure mag in small or thin quantities burns well, Mag alloys in large castings do not. the machining chips from them can ignite when too higher feed rate and depth of cut are used, and that is a hell of a fire VW beetle Crankcases and Gearbox cases are a Magnesium alloy too and you cant get them to burn even with oxy-acyetylene.... they melt so a camp fire has no chance...... |
