saw a cheap land rover disco for sale as the clutch pedal had dropped to the floor and it couldnt be driven,spoke to my brother whos a mechanic at a jag and land rover dealer,thought it wouldnt too bad a job! he said you have to drop the whole gearbox and transaxle out to get to the broken clutch lever out,which snap the box is so heavy youll never get it back in without either a hoist or lots of people needless to say I didnt buy the car ! mondeo clutchs he mentioned b4,same as the x types,with have to drop the complete front crossmember and have the engine half out even then its stilll awkward,progress eh , I will stick to my classics thanks I did mine ok. If its just the fork you could probably get away with just a really big trolly jack.

Isn't it supposed to be the headlights on a megane or something? My dad's got a Megane CC - it created a lot of headscratching when a headlight bulb blew a while back. Turns out you have to take the wheel off and go in through the wheelarch to change it. Wheel off, unbolt plastic inner wing, unscrew plastic cap from back off lamp, unclip bulb and remove simple - if you have hands like ET, a good lamp to see what is happening then a good memory that co-ordinates with your ET like hand as you cannot see anything as it is all touch. Bloody french cars. OH ! and a bit of TCP to put on your arm as all the skin is removed.

Welding underneath cars, particularly cills, which grow into floorpans and bulkheads etc etc etc. I find most older cars easier to work on, probably due to the way they were assembled in the first place

Na disco clutch arm is hard but nothing really bad 2 trolly jacks and 6 hours did mine by meself including getting the clutch arm welded up and at least at the end of it you've moved large objects not just removed 2 piddly calipers and pads Mk3/4 escort yeh it's best to remove the whiole dash but that's a 20 min job i'd put a CHV stat housing as a worse job, 3 bolts but usually ends up with removing the head and drilling and tapping the dam thing

Anything on a Renault Scenic is a complete nightmare. Took me 2.5 hours to change a headlight unit, had to take loads of it apart AND modify the parts to get them back in. Nightmare

mk4 golf suspension was a pain, normally simple, a few bolts and swap over a few bits and back up. o no.
the suspension is clamped in, and that combined with rust and general curse word, makes it a pain lol.
once you have done the passenger side, and move onto the driver side, they are different!!!!!! on the driver, you have to drop the whole subframe about 3" so you can get the hub low enough to remove the suspension. nightmare.

In my experience:
The 'full circle' exhaust clamps on Peugeots - easy job in principle...but infuriatingly fiddly
The exhaust/turbo bolts on a 406 diesel. Again - simple concept but finger cripplingly annoying

glow plugs on vw 1600 td with out taking the injectors or pump off. 4 hours and cable ties used to aim glow plugs and ring spanners cable ties ties to my fingers so that when they fell out of my grip i did not have to recover them from under the car!

In my experience: The 'full circle' exhaust clamps on Peugeots - easy job in principle...but infuriatingly fiddly heh, I got so fed up of the one on the Midget that I bought a complete new manifold and system, just so I wouldn't have to use one. I though I was doing something wrong, so asked my dad (the previous owner of it) and he said 'nah, they are just curse word'

Gearbox selector seal on my Polo is a nightmare. Changed it twice now and the damn thing still leaks. Just a rubber O ring with a spring inside it, but once its wedged in there, its near impossible to get get out again even though its leaking to curse word... Jabbing it with a sharp implement for 4 hours and setting fire to it was the answer last time...

Wrestling a Ford C4 auto onto the back of a 351 Cleveland was enjoyable. Especially when you're on a dirt driveway, so no jacks (thankfully it was going in a raised B&S ute). The only person who was around who could've helped me was SWMBO, and she hated anything to do with cars beyond putting petrol in and driving them. Yeah, that relationship lasted a looong time But the worst for me is anything anywhere near the radiator or the firewall of a Mini/Morris 1100. I just cannot get my hands in there without removing 99.99999% of the car. Usually it's quicker and easier just to yoink the motor out by the scruff.

one of the funniest on my cars - an Amazon oil filter doesnt fit out the engine bay, it gets caught up with the exhaust and has to be rolled out along the exhaust and removed as it passes the gearbox!

^^ lol, you are right there, I've had to do that. Damn thing dribbles oil everywhere while you are trying to extract it too. which reminds me.. if you put a zetec in a mk1/2 escort, make sure you put a CVH oil filter on it cos if you leave the standard oil filter on, it hits the chassis when you try to change it and it's engine up time ;D PS, starter motor on an essex engined series land-rover, anyone? hahaha. Also, the worst bit about doing essex heads in a scimitar is the exhaust manifold bolts. 1/2" heads, recessed and 100% certain not to come out easily, and yes, bolts.. not nuts so heat doesn't help

I remember first job I did on my old mini was change the mechanical fuel pump at the base of the rear of the block. Took about 4 hous of scraped knuckles on the carb/inlet/exhaust and anything else in the engine bay! Don't think I could have doen it from under because of the subframe, but I had no jack or anything either so no chance really!

Not so much the worst job as any job can be a total headache if you A are rolling around in a dirty back street and B you don't have the correct gear.
However have you ever done a clutch in a Montego??
Now a cltch in a Mk3 cavalier well ten minutes from opening the tool box to washing your hands.

For me i fitted a new alternater on the ford spectron.Took me 3 hours to get the old one off,You have to move the drivers seat,hand brake.3 fan belts thought i would put 3 new ones on.The 3 hour to put it back together.But i saved myself money i was quoted £300 to the job with parts.I brought the bits for £150 so i saved myself £150 that made me smile.

Some of these sound a great laugh ;D It's not really the job itself I find though, it's the frame of mind I'm in that makes all the difference. Normally the job that should be easy and therefore gets put of to the end of the day when I'm knackered or when there is little time is the one that causes the most grief. Recently put a new belt on my Mk3 Golf, easy peasey you might say, no. Belt seemed wrong i.e too short, went back to the factors who assured me it was the correct one but it only went on with the aid of levers and turning the motor over which done it no good at all. End result after much cursing was a missed dinner and a belt that is still worn, so not even a sense of satisfaction of a job well done. As said tooling plays a big part too, especially for us hobby types. That seized bolt is only generally found when all that is available is a adjustable spanner and a pack of swan vestas
