I love steam punk, the brass detailing is amazing. Its just little bits, like the surround on the bonnet around the carbs. Looks ace.
And the diesel one is in a different leauge / style, both look amazing by their own merits.

Steampunk is only becoming a "style" now its fashionable, there are plenty of steam powered projects around and plenty of steamy people still working with boilers and condensers, sticking a few bits of brass and some cog wheels on stuff does not make it Steampunk, much like painting your face white and wearing Panda eye make up does not make you a Goth, or growing you hair long make you a metalhead. Steampunk was originally a "what if" kinda thing, What if Victorian engineers had built a robot? or a computer? or a space ship? If a Victorian engineer had built a Hotrod, it would have a steam engine and the brassy decorations would be mostly removed as superfluous to the business of going fast (much like rodders these day take off extra weight) although some of the decoration would still be there as it would have been cast in as things were made that way. The word "steampunk" is thrown at anything with brass glued on it these days. I like the second rod, but it looks more like dieselpunk to me. I know there are 'steamy people' out there.... I was one of 'em up till about 10 years ago and still have a 1/3 share in an old GWR heavy freight locomotive as well as the Hymek diesel listed on my signature. The 'steamy' guys aren't generally into the punk style even though it comes as standard on old steam engines. The point I was makin' is that it doesn't have to be steam powered to be steampunk. The OP's hot rod pic was a petrol powered steampunk rod..... so why not a diesel powered steampunk rod? I agree that painting your face white and wearing panda eye make up don't necessarily make you a goth but it would certainly make you into the 'style' of a goth. If someone built a steam powered steampunk rod well... I'd be the first to applaud them.

popuptoaster does have a very good point. A group of us are working on a few projects particularly with computers, incorporating them into victorian style furniture. Not steampunk, but still fun.. One of the books I never finished was a steampunk novel!

I think you'll find steampunk developed from comics and cartoons and was very much a fashion thing before it bled into anything else. Thus how it got the word punk in its name. Its a similar thing to cybergoth. The 'dressup' or cosplay was the first, and original, transition from drawings to real life. Geeks were the originators.
Also...forgot to mention that even before that, it was a form of science fiction writing.

Both the cars in this thread are brilliant, interesting styling and ideas and particularly in the case of the first one, finished to an excellent standard. Think I prefer the raw-ness of the second one though, but the carb detailing on the first one is spectacular.
Also, on a slightly different note, it'd be nice to read a thread with an ace car in it without you lot turning it into daft bickering about the correct term for describing the car in question. Recently a good thread starts and then EVERY TIME it descends into an argument about whether the car is Shakotan or Bosozoku (or how you spell the damn words), whether the term "J" is offensive to anyone, or whether that first rod is "steampunk" or not.
I thought we were here to appreciate and enjoy talking about cool cars, I'd like to do that without having to wade through pages of oneupmanship and dick waving about who knows the most car terms and history.
I don't give a curse word if it really is steampunk or not, it's ace, good find!

id class them both as gimmick-rods rather than anything. i don't like either of them. badly proportioned with too much emphasis placed on gimmicky little features rather than the whole asthetic.
i had a pic of a wicked 28A RPU where was totally held together with clout rivets, but i cant find it now. that was far more steampunk than either of these.

Hell dez.... you're gonna kick it all off and upset Mike again. Only posted it cos someone said it would be nice to see a sedan. Me and popup weren't arguing... he has a point how meanings change over time. Now... I never said that the derv rod was the definitive steampunk rod... was just the only pic I have... so I posted it!! ;D So.... get your ass into gear cos we all wanna see this riveted R28 you promised us!!

Finding out the intricacies of the roots of something just help understand the reasoning behind the final product. Itd be boring if everyone just went "err that's well good"

I hates it when people post pics with no text to go with it.... especially if it's something you don't recognise or can't see under the hood/bonnet etc etc.

I agree that it'd be boring if we all just said "that's great", it's just a shame if it turns into "I know best" rather than learning from each other. It wasn't aimed at anyone in particular either.
