Now I know that the seller has as good as said this one is knackered and only a lunatic would take it on.. But knackered engine isn't a problem.. and the welding? that's only metal, innit? I have not had such lustful yearnings toward my computer screen since I was asked to confirm I was an adult before entering a website at the age of 15! Can someone talk me back into looking at sensible things or turning off the eBay? Or failing that, anyone know anything about H Vans that I should know? prices seem to vary wildly but most seem to be above my price range.. Wantand another Google threw up at random

I don't know much about these except that I like them and would make an interesting alternative to a vw camper.

Welding warning. Citroens of this era tended to be made up of layers of metal, rather than thicker metal where support was needed. Can be a big PITA. Engine warning. I don't think it's as easy as tracking down a Traction Avant engine, as the layout is different. You can still get pretty much all of the bits for a rebuild though. Driving warning. The exhaust manifold is a few inches from your throttle foot. They are loud, slow and very, very noisy. However, they are very cool and we drove one to Norway, via France, The Netherlands, Germany, Denmark and Sweden.

The driving warning bothers me not in the slightest, but I think the rest of your warnings were pretty much what I was trying to avoid hearing.. So what am I looking at for a non-knackered engine, knackered body, knackered chassis one?...

1947 - Dec '81. diesel and petrol variants, all manner of wheel-base lengths & body styles. Front wheel drive & 3 speed 'boxes. suicide doors = french built, 'normal' doors = one of the 10,000 odd Dutch built vans.
Brake rebuilds are bloody pricey! our local 2cv specialist has one & reckoned it cost in excess of 1k for a full brake overhaul!

Cheaper alternative: Buy one of these: Let the tyres down to 20psi, unbolt the exhaust and retard the timing. Then buy some of these: Affix with 6" nails. Stand back and admire. Job's a good 'un. ;D

It is very tempting.. Pluses It's incredibly cool it's cheap UK registered and tax exempt separate chassis so body can be hanging to feck and still be MOTable
Minuses.. It's fecked. The chassis is made of rust So's the body The engine is broken It's tall so probably wouldn't go in the garage (would have to check this)
I know rat look has been done to death and everything, but I still get yearnings when I see proper patina like that ;D

I saw one in Frome late last year... I saw it again the next week as it hammered past me on the M5 going towards NEC Classic Car Show. I saw it AGAIN a month later in Retro Cars from pictures at an Ace Cafe meet, it runs a Rover V8 and is all round awesome.
H Vans are super cool, as you say though, prices vary wildly.

I don't think id have one personnaly. but seeing one going down the road you can see the point.. they are as nuts as everything french of that era... its great... as said they rust... but find a good one. the french cars tend to have been looked after more than the brit ones as they had a better parts service... the double skinned steel is a problem but problems in that area are easily spotted, just look out for lumps in metal...
i just got insured on dads DS yesterday and had the pleasure of driving it home from the MOT (which it passed) and old citroens are amazing! the looks they get from other people are worth it alone haha

Bruce, that really is/isn't helping, depending on how you look at it! I hate it when people don't put prices up Looks like I've been warned away from the specific one I was looking at.. but it's nice to know that they are about at relatively affordable prices. Time to do some hunting! and take a tape measure, because I have a funny feeling it's height would mean it would be living on the road..

Height wise, I'm 5'9'' and can comfortably stand up in the rear. That's a big advantage. The floor is really low and flat so unlike a VW, you've got TONS of space back there, and you don't need a pop-up roof to put your trousers on.
They are certainly tough. I got the HT leads in the wrong order and it still ran, on one cylinder! I've also thrashed up mountains, blatted along German autobahns (well, 50mph...) and hurled it into corners like a Mini - they handle really, really well!
