Awesome Granada, looks like in superb condition.
For the timing-gear, the fibre ones do have the reputation, but they rearly break. ho, not here in holland, where there are alot of Granada`s en Capri`s left that are daily drivers. The steel ones make more noise, and even if they would break, there`s no problem. The valve`s can`t hit the pistons.

That's not my Granada but I had seen it wafting around where I work a few times a couple of years ago (I think the geezer who had it then flogged it last year!)... Was that snap taken in New Malden by the gloriously 70's office blocks there...?!

you can get an alli timing wheel for less noise I have seen the alli ones for sale at Burtons but they are considerably more expensive than the steel ones...!!! My old 3-litre Capri spat out its fibre timing gear and I did replace it with steel one and to be honest I didn't notice that much more noise... Saying that though I think the exhaust on the Granada is tuned for a more silent cruise (rather than the Capri's shouty blast!) so I may notice it more this time around...!!! Maybe I will just leave it until it does give way, if at all... On another note has anybody out there changed the valve stem oil seals on an Essex V6 (and if so was it a tough job?!) as I think mine need changing soon as there is a blue puff eminating from the exhaust every now and again...

Hello there folks... I've got all the spare bits and pieces I need to try and cure the b@$ta!d engine trouble I am experiencing but I need to ask just one (for now!!!) stupid question... Where is the best place to get high quality condensors and coils for the Essex V6 engine...?! I know they literally don't make 'em like they used to (i.e curse word!) so I need to find the best I can as I think the new condensor that is on there now is one of THE main problems... If any of you wonderfully knowledgeable people out there can help me it would be hugely appreciated, I want to get my brute back on the road...

Just a quick tip folks... When there is a problem with an older motor get your mechanic to check the 'routine' things first, not AFTER delving in to all the inards of the engine (thus incurring those lovely labour charges)...!!! It will most certainly save you a whole heap of bunce... The beast is back on the road after having the £4.00 condensor changed as the other was a dud... Not bad after a couple of centuries in labour charges... Anyhow, I'm just glad to be feeling the collar of all those slags out there blagging banks and koshing night watchmen... ;D YOU'RE NICKED MY SON...!!!

Do yourself a favour and throw away the points and condensor! Get yourself a nice optical or even magnetic electronic ignition setup and couple this with a Lucas Gold coil, 8mm silicone plug leads and NGK plugs - You will notice a big difference in cold starts, smoothness and MPG. Also you will prob. find the idle speed needs reducing down after fitting as the efficiency of the engine has now been improved.
Best (and first) mod you can ever do on any daily driver once you've serviced and rustproofed it!

My friend's dad had one of these when we were at school some 30 years ago! It was a 77/R 2.0 Ghia auto in metalic gold, and boy was it gutless However it was very comfortable, the seats were like sofa's! It wafted around and was very quiet. Superb car just needed the 3 litre Essex like yours. Great car you got there mate.

Whoooooo! Memories for me there. The first car I ever bought at age 17 was an Arizona gold 3.0 Ghia, just like yours HHA 723N. I debadged it, jacked it up, fit 100+ chromes and white letters, and painted it blue and white (it was 1982).
I really would love another MK1 Granny, might even swop me Pacer for one.

I have Lumenition on my V8 and the ignition is about the only thing that has never given me any trouble, literally. I'd fit another non-points setup any day. --Phil

I have been tempted to fit and electronic ignition on all the classics I have ever owned but I have been a bit scared as I'm just worried that new meeting old (in terms of technology) may spoil things a bit...! I'm all for the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" school of thought but if this really can make things much better I'd be daft to ignore it...?!

Well I know I've not updated this thread for a while but I haven't properly used this old brute for a couple of years... It has been run regularly and cleaned and even been allowed to have a little blast (on a private, closed road!) every now and again but that's about it! It was with a bit of regret that I put it up for sale the other week ( retrorides.proboards.com/thread/155530/1977-granada-litre-3500ono-middlesex ) as it just doesn't get used and I'd quite like a Capri 3-litre S...!!! So the old barge was dragged out, washed off and taken for it's first MOT in a couple of years... It passed first time with no problems and no advisories!!! I could have cried! Even my good lady wife's 5 year old BMW failed its MOT this year!!!!!!!! So it is now being used sporadically to give the criminal catcher a bit of a shake-down and loosen-up and I have to say that my decision to put it up for sale may have been just the slightest bit hasty. It is one of those cars that I love to bits (I always, ALWAYS, wanted one!) but I just don't know what to do now!!! I've had my time with it yet I feel our time is not yet quite over... What a ruddy awkward conundrum indeed...!!! However, this keeps the fires burning as it were...

What a car...

Well it is a huge shame it has gone but I've had my time with it and it had to go to someone who could spend a bit more money on it and had a bit more time to lavish on it... I am pleased to say it has found such a person so that does soften the blow a little bit, it has gone to a good home!
As for the Capri, we'll have to see...
