Just wondering if anyone here ever had a clutch replaced by Mr Clutch, I phoned them today and asked how much to fit a new clutch kit on my clapped out old Toyota Carina.* £199 (parts and labour and VAT) said the man...... "but if we discover anymore parts that need replacing then obviously it will cost more". Am I going to get ripped off here? *I'd do it myself but I live in a flat (with no garden or driveway) in the town centre so I have nowhere to do it.

"your flywheel is badly scored mate, it really needs skimmed - costs £30 extra"
"really? I don't see a lathe in your workshop"
"err, its....um."
"just put the clutch on, please."
Cheap enough and assuming its a simple car, there isnt too much they can do wrong. Although, when I used to work for halfords years back, someone from Mr Clutch would often stop in to buy a Haynes manual for whatever car they had in. They are the kwikfit of the clutch world. if you get a decent chap working there and if all goes well it will be ok, but of you get some barely trained "technician" just out of nappies you might have issues and they often don't balk at dumming up extra work if they think they can get away with it.

I've never taken a car to them personally but know people who have and not one of them had a good word to say about them. One mate inparticular took a 306 there and they managed to knacker up an engine mount and leave half the subframe bolts loose!

when I first passed my test I called around for quotes on my 1996 1.0 polo, they were the cheapest by about £50. then the bloke called me and said It had to be skimmed for the clutch to last and I said no, and he said the clutch would only last 300 miles if I didnt get it done! I ignored him and 6000 miles I hear my baby is still going strong =]

Or use an indipendant garage, the guy I use local to me when I'm too busy or can't be arsed only charges £23 per hour and he's a top job "salt of the earth" kinda guy ;D he once let my mate (who he didn't know) store his car at his garage, for 2 months, free of charge! Ask some local car clubs to reccomend some places, and try to find somewhere that's into retros and not just the money, look for a place with lots of projects, you'll find most of the projects are the owners

Thanks for the replies, I got a qoute from a couple of local places, the first said £425! the second said it would cost £180 just for parts! I think I'll go to Mr clutch but I will make it very clear to them that I will not be paying for any extra work unless they have my prior consent.

Get them to do it, then sit and watch. Problem solved Any independent should be able to do it for similar money unless the clutch is a lot from a normal factor

I took my Alfa 155 to Mr Clutch in Luton several years ago as they were the only ones who would actually do the job. Every other garage I phoned either refused the job because it was an Alfa or quoted more than the car was worth. I asked them to keep the old clutch to show me what had failed, which they did, and they charged exactly what they had quoted. Only minor complaint was that the plastic clips on th undertray broke and it was hanging down. Took it back and they popped it straight up on the ramp and cable tied the tray back into place.

I used to use a local ex Skoda dealer who took on a Mr Clutch franchise after he lost the Skoda dealership for not being shiny enough.
He still sold older Skodas, and knew stuff on most other motors. All his mechanics/fitters were Skoda trained so knew workshop procedures and discipline.
Did a clutch for me on a Favorit, no "Extras", just the job and detailed when it should be checked for the Warranty to remain valid.
Shame they went bust and lost the franchise.

At the end of the day, as mentioned above, Mr Clutch is a franchise.
One branch could be run by a bunch of cowboys, the other by a great mechanic who just wants the recognition of a brand name above his garage door.
Try googling Mr Clutch and your town and see if their are any online reviews, or find someone who's used them in the past.

I've used the Luton one once, and my Dad also used it once.
The Mondeo that I sent in came back with it's wheel nuts on the wrong way round (with the flat side against the wheel instead of the tapered side) - otherwise they didn't do a bad job.
The Audi that my Dad took in spent a couple of extra days there because they managed to damage some of the engine wiring loom with the gearbox. That clutch is still a bit juddery now, 10,000 miles later - we think that they left mucky handprints on the flywheel.

I'll be taking the car to the Mr Clutch franchise in Oxford, a bloke I work with had his clutch done there and reckons the service he received was fine. Also I managed to find one review on the web which was full of praise. I'll also wait there while they do it and I will politely explain that I won't be taking any funny business from them.
Once again, thanks for all the helpful replies.

'wait while they do it'? I hope they are a bit quicker than our local citroen dealer who had our works C8 in for a new clutch last week then lol ;D 5 days later we got it back, apparently its a whole day to remove gearbox,6 hours to remove and refit clutch and another day to fit it all back together....

I never had a problem with them. £120 for the clutch on my polo a few years back, they did it in an hour n half. If they start saying it might cost more for other work tell them to phone you if they find anything, or sit in the waiting room while they do it.
