Ohhhh- My cousin works as a gardener among other jobs here in sunny dry Marlborough. He has been working for this old lady- she is in her 80's. She has a mint 240z sitting in here garage- its pampered but not driven- she just loves it!
I think I need to inquire more and then start doing her gardens, listening to her old tales, feeding her cats, taking around flowers/fine chocolate, cooking nice moonlit meals.......and passing little comments like "oh I've always wanted a 240z ever since I was little but I just cant find one that deserves the love and attention I would cherish upon it....

So...
What are you going to do about that horrible window in the middle of your new roof? This project is totally barmy, it is the sort of thing I would take on. Full marks that man

Full marks that man A little unsure at the moment. I may take the old roof skin, and reskin it, I may carbon fibre skin it, not really sure at the minute. But certainly, the sunroof has to go. It's like a third eye on a beautiful girl.

Tiny update: Following both the build poll, and the wheel poll, some decisions have been arrived at. The wideboy build is the only way forward, as for the wheels, the 5-spokes are preferred, although given a SINGLE original 917 wheel retails at 4,000 GBP, if I do go down that route, it'll be the newly made replicas that shod the beasty. Not quite sure my pockets are willing to stretch that far, but it is early days yet, this build has a long time left to run. Malcolm messaged me, he's going to get back to welding the shell shortly, now he has all the parts he needed, he's been busy with work for both McLaren and Aston Martin so pushing the Z to one side is an obvious no-brainer. Lastly, I've finalised the interior plans on paper, it should be along the lines of a GT3 car meets Singer porsche meets 70's GT tourer, it'll certainly be something special, in the mean time I'll continue amassing parts here and there. In cheaper news, a few things picked up off fleabay: some new balljoints and a tatty but solid OE spoiler, I searched for a 432 reproduction spoiler (it's 'ribbed' for her pleasure) but alas like many things, a little too much like unicorn poo when it comes to finding them.

I have finally persuaded someone to consider (atleast) making a one off set of wheel centres like those below. Hopefully, they should come in considerable cheaper than a shop bought set. The cheapest of which is 2K, and even then, they're cast wheels, and in the wrong PCD. These will be 100% custom. Awesome! So again, thanks to your input, a little bit more of the Datsun puzzle is complete. Also tracked down both a pair of Euro style tail lights at a reasonable price, unlike the RIDICULOUS amounts some of the UK Z fraternity seem to think they 'are worth'. And better yet, a set of reproduction lens, allowing me to custom back the housing with a LED array, lighter, brighter, and not prone to disintegration from 40 year old plastics. HUZZAH 70 quid for a pair. To my door, I'll take that thanks!

MAJOR UPDATE ALERT Malcolm has made some fairly steady progress with the shell, however...in doing so a ton of gremlins turned up. I mean...you wouldn't think it possible, but yes, MAJOR gremlins. Now, we'd always known the shell had had a major accident at some point in it's life, in retrospect, we have NO idea why they decided to fix it, it should have been scrapped then and there. To summarise...
- Difficult to judge what kind of accident the car had. I thought it was a roll, but looks like the whole car was bent up on the left side in the accident and that would have buckled the roof badly.
- Whatever happened I reckon the reason the roof was removed was to straighten that buckle out. They must have put a roof from another car back on and kind of trimmed it to suit what was there.
- Current problem is the A pillar (where the door hinges bolt) and the B pillar (door shut) are half an inch further apart on the right side, and it's the right side that is closer to being correct.
- On the left side they have shortened the rear wing so they could fit the new door. They've knocked the rear panel around so the join is half an inch further back, and they've trimmed the extra half inch off the flange that wraps around the door shut.
If you recall the first few photos you can actually see what we're talking about here...if you look where the rear 1/4 panel starts, you can see a weld...whoever curse word about with the shell to begin with has actually chopped out a 1/2 inch strip and effectively shorted the rear 1/4 panel to make the door fit. Now, at this point in time, beyond making the jig and repairing the front frame rail, not a huge amount of work/money has gone into the shell at this point. In terms of other accumulated parts specific to a 240z...there is a fair bit of investment of both time and parts sourced. I could proceed with the shell as it is, it *is* repairable, it is just whether it's honestly worth bothering to do so, it's relatively rust free yes, but structurally sound? I have sincere doubts. I want this to be a labour of love, but hell is the one testing my patience, so I am actively looking for another shell at present...I'll keep you guys informed as to where this leads to. *frustrated as hell*

Just caught up on this - I think you're wise to seek out another shell. It's a shame this one turned out to be more crooked than it first seemed. As you said, it's a labour of love! You'll get there!

Ah nuts, that's a right bodge then. As you said, probably should've been scrapped following the accident as that sounds more hassle than finding a new shell surely. Shame for you now, hopefully you'll find a way around it though

Hi, Can you not get one from "Rockey Auto" in Japan? www.rockyauto.co.jp/If you have shown your commitment, they might sell you one of their rolling shell. Then again they will be RHD so it might not be good for you!? Cheers Atchi p.s. If you want me to get in touch with them, let me know as I'm Japanese. I might be able to help!

You'll get there! So....to follow up on this...I have a job offer in Western Canada...which comes with a truck...starting in September, so...come Autumn I shall be flying back to the UK to part out the shell. Unless anyone is genuinely interested in some hard graft? - shipping over the 'rare' and now incredibly expensive parts - lexan, carbon fibre (they were bought when the dollar was considerably more friendly to the pound) and starting afresh with a new, registered and running 240z. The remainder of the parts in the UK - essentially a complete car minus interior and gearbox/engine will be split to keep 240/260/280z's in the UK, on the road. Luckily all the parts coming back to Canada will be pretty lightweight. The job comes with a full workshop, garage and an immense number of dirt roads - as they are in Alberta to 'test drive' on. Also looking to get my mitts on a W123 for camping duties. So for anyone wondering, the project isn't dead, just on a 4 month hiatus It will also be probably the only 240z...to come with a Esprit-esque ski-rack for the long snowy winter.

Oh good god what a project I have kittens just thinking about what would happen if mine ever saw rain. Totally understand where you are coming from, I hope it all comes good eventually. Sometimes wish mine wasn't as good as it is so I could go the wide arch, caged trackday route. Your renderings are absolutely gorgeous, stick with it that is definitely the route to go. All the best Nick

...found a new hoopdee! it's a 280z...it's overpriced...it's been modified horribly...but it's supposedly a clean body, new starter, new wheel cylinders - expensive things!, everything works and more importantly, road legal..so I could finally have a running resto. seeing it next week, will document!
