the whole fuel tank design is a disaster , if the tank inlet was placed on top of the tank , then run a rubber /plastic hose up to the filler ..or possibly inside the quater panel
then theres that stupid breather hose lol ...why thread that through the body work lol
a £1 plastic sheild like on the fronts would prob make the tank last for ever too

I had this very recently on a captive seatbelt nut, just knackered the first thread. If there's plenty of thread engagement then just take a drill which is slightly bigger than the thread and drill out the first thread. I used a sleeve of steel tube cut to the right length to go over the drill bit and prevent taking out more than you need. Not advisable if there are only 5 threads as you're loosing 20% of them, with the seatbelt there were approx 20 so only loosing 5%.

Also while it was out did you check the structure of the panel that breather goes thru? Sometimes its as rotten as a pear.... Not one of vw's greater moments realy ;D

yeah its a bit frilly under there if I'm honest...scraped it up and primed and sealered it , its not even gona be nice to make a decent welded repair in there as its so closed in
btw got the tank from ebay.de £52 posted , thought it was a good deal , fits better than the ecp one too

Probably should have lol.. And yeah welding under there is an .. Especially when you keep hitting your helmet on the rear drum while tring to squeeze in between it and the sill
