Ok, I have an R reg 2.5 Di non turbo swb transit, it's in great condition and has obviously been pampered it's whole life, it runs faultlessly for 99.9% of the time. The only problem is that without fail when you start it from cold (which it does instantly in any weather) unless you give a really good rev it will just stall itself out... basically it doesn't like to sit idling for the first 30 seconds of running, it will appear to be idling fine for say 5 or 6 seconds but then it'll stutter stumble and die, you start it up again and it'll do the same.. Afetr it has been running a minute or so or if you really rev the ring out of it on start up, it'll be 100% all day and idle as long as you could ever want.. In all other ways it's great no black smoke 30+mpg every where much more on a run and like I say It ALWAYS starts first time every time iir it has just over 100k on the clock.. Any ideas? it's perfectly liveable with it just irritates me (i'm like that) and I'm not really well up on Diesels of any description so beyond prodding various vac hoses and egr valves I'm a bit lost on what to fiddle with as it's obv not anything particularly major (well I hope not) cheers dudes have a supervan or two for your troubles

Cold start function not working? if it has one... If it's started doing that more as the weather's getting colder it could be worth checking. never done much with di engines apart from driven transits that had them and given them basic servicing, always uber reliable for me. So not really had to study up on the finer points.

+1 for the cold start... it's electrically operated on most DI's, there is a switch on the stat housing that passes a live to a solenoid on the pump if the temp is low and increases the fuelling to suit.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

and it would cause it to cough and splutter and cut out. Would be a much more noticeable problem as the weather starts getting cold

OK sounds likely.... I did have a similar chain of thought but it's done the same in all weather and does start instantly and then does idle briefly, usually i start it then as i back down the driveway (on a hill so I let of the throttle) it starts buggering around...
I 'll give it a fiddle though a see weather there's voltage coming of it when cold..

Is it usually when backing down the hill or does it do it even when parked on a flat surface? It could be crud in the fuel which is partially blocking the filter and parking on a hill causes the crud to be nearer to the fuel lines.
Might sound mad but have you tried parking it the other way round and trying that, or replacing the fuel filter? On the last one I had it had starting problems and my local garage swore it was because it had a cheap aftermarket filter fitted. He sourced a genuine one and the problem went away.

I have had this problem with what turned out to be rouge diesel, try a good quality filter, i also found that esso diesel made all my transits run noticably different to any other diesel.

No it always does it from stone cold, whatever the orientation of the van i.e. if it 's been left overnight, if it's been run that day it wont do it.. i never fill up anywhere consistently (or even notice where i fill up) so i doubt its just dodgy diesel... off to get the multimeter on it now... will report back later
