Looks great, well done for bringing it back to life. Both of my sisters owned one of these - one was brand new, a red 1.5 slightly above base model. Went OK, brought back real memories seeing the interior and those weird switches! The other was a metallic blue SXi (I think?) with muti spoke alloys and generally better equipment. This car kept snapping clutch cables - it ahppened so frequently that my sister got fed up with waiting for a tow from the AA and used to keep a spare in the boot of the car which she learnt to change on her own by the side of the road!

The clutch cables were pretty weak, not easy to get hold of now either. This 1 is just a base model 1.2L but as its about as heavy as a wet newspaper it doesnt go to bad for a little 1.2

Thinking about doing the typical VAG thing and dropping it on its ar*e and sticking some deep dish wheels on and just using it for shows Nooooo! Keep it as it is... when was the last time we saw one on the road??!!

True, theres not many of these left out there. Still no market for them though! I know a guy has just scrapped his after spending £500 on it, because no-one wanted to buy it.
As this cars been in the family from new, its not something that I think I'll ever sell, but I would like to update it slightly, while still keeping it looking original

I nearly bought a modded red one of these back in 2004, I took it for a test drive and can remember pushing a mk3 golf gti up the motorway at 120mph in 4th gear . I was rather impressed with the performace but I ended up buying a clean mk2 golf 16v gti instead. Good car, gets a retro rating from me.

Worthless, but superb value for money. I paid £102 for mine last month, needed tyres (& a wheel change, natch!) front pads and a new wiper blade! 1500 basic, an excellent little keeper.

Looks a good buy that Nigel. Most people have forgot these cars even exist as they were the "PreVAG" era. Technically this was designed to be the Mk2 Golf, but VW shelved it and seat bought the design, then used the "system porsche" as a bit of a sale gimmick. Pretty strong engine all the same

Aye -its a fun toy. I've missed my old Yugo when I sold it to a mate- I reckon this is a pretty good alternative.
And it owes me less than weigh in money.

I know this wont be to everyones taste, but I think its going to be the route I take. I doubt I'll ever use this as a daily driver again, so it will just goto a few shows. Ive photoshopped loads of wheels and I think these Rota GT3's look the best with the ride height I want. Opinions welcome, good or bad.

It was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro's Italdesign and was prepared for industrialisation by the German manufacturer Karmann. By the time Giugiaro was assigned to the Ibiza project, his previous proposal for the second generation of the Volkswagen Golf had been rejected by Volkswagen. So when SEAT approached him with the proposal for a spacious supermini class contender, that particular project was reincarnated as the first generation of the SEAT Ibiza. The gearbox and powertrain was developed in collaboration with Porsche, thus named under licence System Porsche. Despite Porsche's direct involvement in the Ibiza's engines, it was only after paying a royalty of 7 German marks per car sold back to Porsche that SEAT gained the right to put the 'System Porsche' inscription on the engine blocks Info from Wiki

Been looking for the SXI/GLX alloys for 3 years now. Given it up as a bad job, although if some ever do show up I will snap them up

I'll keep an eye out for it cropping up again then Nigel. Just looking into ways of lowering the mofo the 90-100mm that it needs to look good. But while we've had 3 power cuts today I painted the bonnet vents matt black, to break up the uber whiteness. Gonna order the red 10spoke deep dish wheels after payday, if they don't look right I'll redo the inners satin black. Bumpers are coming off soon, so I can get behind them to get the exposed bit painted and freshly waxoyled. Quite happy with the old girls coming along

Hopefully I can drop the back end enough to make them wheels look good, if not i'll opt for some Pslots I think

i this brings back some memories, i had a 3 door on a d plate back in 96, great little car which i put some wheels from a fiat x19 on and thought i was the bogs dollocks. from memory though if you let the brake discs wear too much it spits the pads out when you brake too hard so might be worth checking the discs and pads.
