As promised, here is a quick flick through the life of my TR7. Bought from E-bay for £150 - I wasn't expecting much. And I got what I expected. So I sat on E-bay and spent lots of my hard earned on new bits. Until it started to look car shaped again. Then I took it for its first MOT. The original wheels didn't fit over the TR8 brakes that E-bay had provided. Then it needed some colour. Que silly costume Primed. Splattered. Unfortunately I cocked up the primer and the result was that the top coat resembled sand paper! Still, after a last minute fit up... ...and a 6am oil change it made it to the 2008 Retro Car Show. I managed to respray the Drivers side shortly after. Since then E-bay has provided these.... these... Capri 2.8 discs and spacered escort mexico callipers. 8 more valves. Suitably rebuilt. And sporting an MSD 6 ignition box. I then needed to address the burnt and battered interior. First the boot. Probably the last time it was tidy. And I started to build new door cards. Don't like this one - its due to be changed. New carpets are also being laid as well. You may have noticed I like my music whilst I'm driving, most of the stuff has been bought once and I just keep moving it from car to car, the head unit is 11 years old, the amp is more like 14! This year has seen more lowness front and back. And I have finally repainted the bonnet. We made it to Goodwood breakfast club. I am currently building a strut brace for the front and fighting the urge to raise the front suspension up an inch. Hope this is ok. Richard.

Well after 4 years there is something to report on this. 3 years after the car hit the road (2011) the engine bay looked like this: but the body wasnt so good, and there were cracks appearing in the paint and it was stating to look embarrassing. So I hatched a plan for a quick refresh, 1 year, respray, refurb interior and wheels. Oh well. By early 2012 I had made some progress. But it was slow going - I hate body work prep! Then my wife fell pregnant with our second child. Of course this is soon followed by "the nursery needs decorating", then No1 Son needs his bedroom decorating, then the living room needs decorating! and so on. Unfortunately My wifes pregnancy was not straightforward and No2 Son has some medical complications that have taken a lot of time, energy and love. So my poor car has taken a back seat. But a major stage has been achieved and so its time to reawaken the thread and hopefully chart its return to the road. Yes, the car has now got..... a bit of colour on it! so over the next couple of weeks I will hopefully be posting lots of pretty pictures of a shiny car.......hopefully.

May I ask what colour that is? Is it "easy" to spray yourself? Cheers

ooffff at her undercarriage was it parked in a pond ? It wasnt very pretty, some of the rust repair plates were pulled off by hand and it took a lot of hours cleaning up the floors and chassis bits to the point where I could paint them. The colour is renault otterman blue, as seen on countless meganes and scenics, it has a slight pearl in it and is a bit of a pig to be honest, I wish I had chosen a simpler version but it does look nice. Cheers for the replies, I hope to have some more updates very soon.

Nothing massive achieved yet but I have been painting all the hard to reach spots using an aerosol of the same paint I will be spraying. Should get the door shuts and returns done tonight.

Well I did manage to get the shuts painted this weekend, and the engine bay. 2nd time out for my HVLP gun and I think I am getting the hang of it. I hope to get some more done Monday and Tuesday.

Very nice, I've been a long time closet TR7 fan and quite fancy building a FHC competition car. I quite fancy trying to squeeze the alloy V6 engine and gearbox from a Jaguar S-type into one. I even have such an engine and gearbox but they are ear-marked for my Scimitar. Bookmarking for future updates.

Well with the paint now hardening I can get on with a couple of other jobs. After the car had been stood for a while a strange smell started to waft through the downstairs of my house, it smelt a bit like gas but we couldnt locate a source. Eventualy I found the fuel tank was leaking. It wasnt dripping on the floor but evaperating off the tank stinking the garage and house out. Taking the tank out of a 7 is a bit of a pig involving taking out the rear axle - but its more fun than endless body prep! Having removed the tank and found several pin prick rust holes I weighed up welding or replacing the tank, but instead thought I would try one of the tank sealing kits available. Nobody had stock of the POR15 version so I bought a sutably sized kit from "Rustbusters" It included tank cleaner, sealer and exterior paint. I stripped the old paint off the tank, filled the biggest holes as per the instructions, cleaned and sealed the inside of the tank. That took 2 years of getting around to! So this week I have finished the job by painting the outside, its a nasty job with some evil smelling 2k paint that doesnt spread well. Its done now so I can get on with jamming it back in and seeing if the engine still runs. Inside, the wet look is actualy the resin surface that completely covers all the metal.

Looks like you're doing a great job there.
I have to say I was never that keen on the TR7 shape, but a convertible in that colour blue looks really good.

That's a great looking respray! What sort of paint / equipment did you use and would you recommend it? Cheers James Cheers for the comments, I havent used anything fancy, just basic spray equipment. Compressor donated by my brother in law when he had no further use for it. It has served me well for many years but things like drills, saws and grinders are a bit beyond it. Sealey Gravity 2.0 spray gun. Inexpensive and reliable, I just need to sort out this splashing from the lid buisness. The offending 1.4m HVLP gun complete with collapsed triger (minus the tip as I need to clean up and service the front end as well as repair the pivot) Bar coat to stop the reactions. (worked very well) High build 2k primer. Goes on nice and sands easy. The paint isn't labelled so i cant say anything about it other than it was nice to use. (Solvent based) And the Laquer was this stuff I was really impressed with this. The base coat and clear came from C and C Paints Charlwood who were very helpful and not expensive at all. Just remember I have full breathing gear for the 2k paint as it is VERY nasty stuff. The barcoat and primer were Ebay sourced. I should have some more updates soon as the Petrol tank is laying under the back of the car ready to install.
