92 Citroen Ax GTi..mapping & power figs today

VTR conversion has been done before and is being done by a mate on his, but I wanted to stick with the 1360 lump as the VTi (GTi head/VTR bottom end) has compression issues and fuelling issues. I've seen some run ok, but the majority have blown up or not made much more power for the sake of slight torque/power increase and extra tax band!

Oh and the compression ratio on the GTI engine is better than on the VTR so I should get better power than when Martin had it on the VTR in his Ax. He made 180bhp odd i think

update from Martin:

what a curse word day
7am start to get the car the 45 miles to andover, as i found yest while towing mine in the rain the panard rod bushes are shot in the disco so trying to keep it in a staight line is hard work, even more with a trailer on but didnt have time to change them so took a very gentle drive to millway
once there the car was missing and wouldnt rev up, i had put it down to the wrong map but it wasnt, headley the mapper hooked up the laptop and said the map sensor reading was wrong so suspected a dodgy wire, we stripped back the loom and wires were ok, after an hour of messing about we worked out that the internal map sensor needs messing with so took the ecu apart, tims ecu is different to the one i had and was a nightmare to do so i got back in the disco and drove the hours drive back to mine(motorway speeds with dodgy bushes is curse word ya pants scary lol), i picked up my old GTI ecu and drove back, once fitted (mine had had the mod done years ago) the car fired up lovely so the mapping started

a note to anyone wanting to do an 8v turbo conversion
as it turns out the rallye inlet takes alot of boost to fill up which induces lag, normally that wouldnt be a problem but the downpipe fitted to tims car is very restrictive (sorry tim it was only after this fiasco i remembered why i had a new exhaust made) and not allowing the turbo to spool up properly and limiting the turbo to 8 PSI, this together with the inlet needing more boost than a standard inlet ment at full chat it made 122BHP@ wheels
the other problem noted is that GTI6 injectors are too big for the 1.4 and its running rich all the way to redline even with the fuel taken right out, the injectors might be ok once the exhaust is sorted

so after a disapointing day and 200 miles driven i came home with tims car only to get a puncture in the disco and to top it off the guy making my new downpipe went sick so mine wont be done till monday
on the up side tim i do have a 2.5 inch SS downpipe that fits your turbo lol

Not going to make the gathering now gutted, too much needs doing to remedy the issues in too little time.
Might have to pull the Polo out and tax it and come in that

Sorry to hear of your troubles but its going to be a cracker when its fixed! You are right not rushing to get it fixed for the gathering but taking your time and doing it right. Can't wait to see it finished so I can imagine how you feel!!

Finally some break through:

going to pick your car up next week, its been mapped at 1bar (headley said it wont go lower, we think its the boost controler at fault), its also running out of fuel at the top of the rev range at 1bar due to the fuel pump not flowing enough
he said it would prob make another 10-15bhp with higher fuel flow
its still not coming on boost till 4k but this is due to it being a 1.4, the inlet and the cam
ill have a little play with the cam timing to see if I can get it to come in earlyer
if not it might need an aftermarket cam

at 1bar it did make 155BHP wheels which is about 185 ish at the fly (which is what mine made at 1 bar lol with your setup)


So a not inconsiderate 155bhp atw. Once all the little bits and bobs are ironed out, fuelling sorted fully, cam and boost, it should easily see over 200bhp atf and about 185bhp atw.

they were sold a lonnnnnnnnggggg time ago lol and they are 4 stud as opposed to GT5 which is 3 stud

cue the beginning of September

So the plans were made last year, to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Citroen Ax being produced, the Ax Owners Club would travel en mass to Paris and the Citroen Factory and Museum at Aulnay Sous Bois.
So far so good.
Unfortunately, as is the way on the AXOC, numerous people dropped out along the way.

Fast forward to late August and the attendance of Ax's at this Anniversary was looking bleak.
The 2 Ax Turbo's had yet to be mapped and various others were in states of disrepair.
Just a week before and one of the Ax's was undergoing an emergency engine transplant.

Then just the night before setting off that same Ax was undergoing a radiator and manifold change!

So somehow early last Thursday morning we ended up at the Channel Tunnel with these:

4 Ax's - two running Saxo VTS engines, one running a VTR Turbo engine and mine running a GTi Turbo engine.

It was a major effort to get the two turbo's there, mine had been off the road for 4+ years during the build and with just 3 days to go the log book had been lost meaning a trip to the local DVLA office to buy a new logbook and tax it at the same time.
and then the nervous wait for insurance proof to be emailed over to get the tax.
Stressful doesn't cut it!!!

So after some hilarity getting down to Paris (it took 6 1/2 hours, numerous stops, losing people a lot, getting lost a lot and racing each a lot ;D ) we arrived at our accommodation on the outskirts of Paris near Disneyland:


The evening was spent relaxing, drinking beer and sleeping after some long drives.
With members from as far as Glasgow (he left at 1:30pm the day before!!), North Wales, Wiltshire and Manchester to name but a few.

The next day we were booked in to see Le Conservatoire, the special Citroen Museum in the factory grounds, in North East Paris.

So after that we eat out at a Steak House nearby and headed back to our site. The next day was spent seeing Parisien sights (i was ill so didn't go) and then on Sunday we headed back to catch an afternoon train back to Blighty

Looking good dude. What the current state of play with the engine? hammered out the issues. Never the less, 155bhp at the wheels is mega, especially in something as heavy as a spec of dust

I like the look minus the mudflaps, with the tow strap. Looks very purposeful.

she wouldnt let me, thankgod my current missus to be allows me to do silly things like that now!
