I've seen a car I'd like to buy on Copart but I've never used it and don't appear to know anyone who has It's a Cat C but comes with their ' Run & Drive Verification' so perfect for my needs (stealing the bigger engine to make my rapidly self-destructing Benz more of an animal) Best of all it's currently £100! The auction is 22 Dec, 12pm at their Sandwich site. If I bid on it & win how long do I get before I have to collect it? (xmas etc.. in the way) Is there a storage charge? The (pretty naff) guide videos on the site mention sale charges but nowhere that I can see does it actually say how much they are Anyone use it? Any tips / experiences to share? Thanks ;D

Depends on where, but some Copart auctions require you to be in the trade. And if not, you must use a licensed broker. The "broker handling charge" can cost you WAY more than the car you "won". Careful! Ask lots of local policy questions.

I bought one today Car cost £225 Buyer fee is £30 Virtual bid fee is £5 Load fee is £10 Plus VAT on their charges Total £277.88 Yearly membership is £40 I buy lots from there so is worth the membership They are easy enough to deal with. Make sure you wear your hi-viz coat and don't look as if you're working on the car on their premises.. I bought a car last wednesday and told i have until this friday to collect before i pay storage fees. However you pay immediately online otherwise they charge you for late payment. £50 i think.. I've been a member for two years and the fees haven't changed in that time When you get there you see alot of their business goes abroad. Artics from poland, hungary, bulgaria lining up to take ship loads back for spares/put on the road

Well it's not like ebay. And if you haven't been to either a car auction or used an online site other than ebay you're not going to know what 'typical car auction stuff' is, are you?

Use it regularly need an account £40 complete faff to setup takes a few days proof of address etc and if you go to your local depot to speed up your application they just stick it in an envelope and post it to head office anyway lol!...
Each item has applicable fees as mentioned above....
You have 2days to collect it.. beware of the hi-viz gestapho as they enforce it strictly load it up and go they get arsey if u look round it, beware they fork truck everything so if youre wanting it for other than spares beware you may have extra dints, torn fuel/brake lines or holes in fuel tank (ive had all of the above in the past)
Storage charges are rape so get it picked up quick, late payment fees are big too so make sure card at the ready and beware of big jumps ive been watching many stuff then my teas been spat on the keyboard at what our eastern european chums will pay for them!!
Also their run and drive verification means it starts and itll go in drive first and is no bearing on if its a boiler or knocking its ass off...
As with all things you takes your chances and its mainly a trade deal like has been said standard auction proceedure

Thanks for all your input, it is much appreciated! So, to sum up what's been said: - Getting an account is a PITA and takes a while, which is a bum as the car I'm looking at sells tomorrow also it's probably not worth the £40 for me (unless the car is dirt cheap) as I won't be using it often enough.. - The charges aren't that scary as long as you pay right away & collect promptly (2 days) - The 'Run & Drive Verification' is meaningless & there may be more damage than mentioned. You pays your money & takes your chance! - You need a hi-viz coat & can't touch the car, other than loading it up Further questions: - In what ways do they accept payment? CC online ok? - Do I have to collect in person or could I send a courier? - Anyone near Sandwich got a Copart account? Thanks again!

Credit card is no problem online, you can send a transporter, i have an account but would need the cash before bidding as i don't want kicking off their system for non-payment

- The charges aren't that scary as long as you pay right away & collect promptly (2 days) You need to pay within two days but collection can be within seven working days. Obviously check with them but that's the case at their Sandtoft depot

I just want to bump this to ask another question. If a car is Cat C (or Cat B I dunno), is it OK to take it out as per normal auctions? I thought Copart was the place where you could only take parts off and leave the shell. Has anyone been to the Chester one? I'm getting really weary of the type of person that works in auction houses/scrapyards, etc.

I thought Copart was the place where you could only take parts off and leave the shell. I think they mostly sell those cars through the U-Pull-It business, the Copart auction cars are usually normal take away jobs.

Old thread bump to leave info =
I bought a Cat A (parts only) and took the whole vehicle offsite on a trailer. Obviously there is no V5 so you'd struggle to get the shell back on the road anyway. It's not impossible, just discouraged by insurance companies and motor trade alike.
Any fire damaged cars also need a hazardous waste certificate to allow you to transport them.

Thought it might be worth bumping this thread as it appears I know work for Copart (Field Agent, whatever that is. I start next week). So, if there is still any interest in the company or signing up, I'm more than happy to find out anything you need to know. Erm, that is all. Have current Copart 'beauty' for your troubles... Chris
