A chuffing is bound to be an exhaust leak somewhere, almost certainly manifold. Get the engine running and feel around the exhaust for air leaks. It'll most usually be around where the manifold mounts to the block, or joins/welds in the exhaust system itself. Quick fix is to use some exhaust sealing paste, long term is new gasket, or welding. If those don't work there's a few other problems it could be, but check there first

Hi Vee,
It oculd be something as simple as the ignition timing is out. So check that the distributor hasn't come loose. I once over-revved an imp engine and the dizzy flew upward out of the engine and hit the deck lid!
If it sounds like it's chuffing a bit, make sure it's running on all four cylinders. I had another imp with a bent valve that ran (and did 70mph) on three cylinders.
ta,
Rich

I'd check your head gasket, Sounds like it's blowing. A compression test will tell you that quickly. Also check inlet and exhausts gaskets and manifolds for leaks.

I'll have another look when I gets a spare evening (think sunday might be), did look & couldn't see any blows on the exhaust.
She was running like a absolute dream at the start of the journey, infact I definitely saw 90mph on my satnav on the M1 (wasn't paying attention to the speed)
She started the loosing power & chugging before the crash, as thats why I stopped at teh services, she had spluttered & struggled on the approach to the services

xXx Could be a number of things, as simple as a blocked carburettor jet. Common head gasket symptoms would be oil in the water (check the header tank), mayonnaise type deposits on the oil filler cap or possibly dipstick. Also look for steam out of the exhaust.

Well went away back up to Manchester to spend my birthday with my girlfriend (Took my beloved Ary, my Land Rover)
Was there from thursday, got back about 5am today lol
Had two letters from the insurance waiting for me, first saying they'd settled for the damage to the taxi with a cash-in-lieu (can GUESS that's just gone in a back pocket )
The second concerned the fate of my Odie....
... & was a cheque to pay for the repair work ;D
Now all i haves to do is figure out some way of getting her to Fenn Lane Motorsport
(Also when can do so, as i've a gig to go to tonight in Birmingham, and back to Manchester on friday  )
((& beg them to have alook at the engine too )) xXx

Saw this on a trailer today - whats happening with it at the moment? you mean like this: That was at work yesterday
After work I took her to Fenn Lane Motorsport, where Jeff is going to sort out the bodywork ;D
Spent a good few hours chatting when I dropped her off hehe
Also while chatting Jeff was having a quick look at the engine, & gave the opinion that the bottom end is fine ;D But might not have any compression on number 4 cylinder
This morning had a phonecall from Jeff this morning confirming this, a explaining what it might be (exhaust valve suspected) Soo have given him the go-ahead to sort her out
;D
*Happy*

Well some of you might have noticed on the general board my request for a photoshop, resulting in this:
I'm a sucker for some fluttering eyelashes...
However have now decided that, due to the sheer amount of metalwork thats body-coloured within the car I'll be keeping her the original colour for now (But with a black bonnet)
However thanks to Jeff for posting this on the Imp owners club forum here's a work-in-progress shot:

couple of posts from the Imp owners club page by Jeff:
Well Odie has been decapitated, with photos to follow.
As suspected, No. 8 exhaust valve has a big chunk out of it, but 1 head bolt snapped :x
Will try removing the head bolt, using heat tomorrow!
Valve replaced, head bolt removed, pics to follow
After talking to Jeff on the phone earlier he is going to change the valve stem seals at the same time as doing the head on monday, and i should have her back by next weekend
;D

You waved at someone random - mines orange! Glad to see the imp's back Lol ahwell (sidenote I now know which is yours ;D Soo shall make shure I wave at the correct transit!)
Well had a great weekend with her in Manc, no problems & 40mpg while not exactly hanging about
adjusted the throttle cable as that had gone abit slack
Also she's been alot better at starting since the work too
However today there was quite a heavy dew, and she seemed to struggle to start & keep running, taking longer to get off choke. I've noticed this before, does anybody else have this? For reminder she running a Solex carb on a standard manifold, with the janspeed & bike can exhaust.
Also can't quite tell if its me, but she seems alittle 'flat' on the uptake?
Might just need a full tune & set-up, will have to sweet-talk Jeff when she nips over to him later this week (As he has VERY kindly agreed to re-torque the head for me ;D ;D )
Also decided the front grill really needs to be satin black too, soo on the lookout for one of them to spray up (soo I have a body-coloured one spare )
Back to happy Impish-ness

lol which Land Rover! Am guessing you mean Ary, my limestone 109" (the one been driving recently)
She's a 2.5 petrol (engine from a 90) & gives about 17mpg round town, reaching to 19 on a run. Or if I stick behind lorries on the run she gives 20mpg!
