Hey all Refitted the engine back into my mates 72 bay camper last weekend after hes stripped it and completely rebuilt it,new everything, bearings the lot... problem weve got is now it starts, but either runs really fast or not at all, theres no idle Timings been checked,as have valve clearances and plugs, its a brand new carb The other thing ive noticed is that only one side of the engine is getting hot, removed plug leads from cold side when running and it cuts out so they must be firing somewhat... At a loss now, anyone got any ideas? cant help thinking its something small i just cant put my finger on it thankings before refit last weekend ;D

New carb.... Brasilian? Been set or just slung on? Got a thermostat for the flaps still in it or has that been taken out? If its still fitted is it fitted propperly? Make sure that (with the stat removed) the flaps open all the way both sides using your hand to push the rod, Then chuck the stat in a gradually warming pan of water and see if it opens to check thats all working.
The temp is more likely something to do with the flaps being jammed than any firing problems. Imassuming itsl using upright cooling and not a porsche style shroud?

All I can think is re-check the timing, sounds like it could be way too retarded. Have you got the right dizzy? most people just whack on a 009, but there are countless different ones, it's important to have the right one. Is the auto choke working? try moving the stepped lever about when starting. Is the carb clean? sounds a stupid question as it's new, but you never know if a bit of sh!t could have got in there.

Theres no flaps in it at all,it never had any to begin with so he didnt bother sourcing any to re-fit,hence theres no thermostat either :s
Its using the same dizzy it was using before the stripdown which was a new one also,i believe it is a 009,as for the carb its an empi one..i had my suspicions with it tho as it seems to hesitate when accelerating/decelerating which i didnt think was right....

Was it running ok prior to rebuild? If so I would definitely suspect the carb, Empi carbs are junk, as is pretty much everything produced by Empi these days. I doubt if they come set up, so unless you've already done it that could be the problem. A rebuilt Solex will last you forever and won't break down

It was running fine before rebuild bar the bottom butterfly fixing on the old carb was loose as hell and there was major end float in the engine....
Will pass that on,i had suspected the carb to be honest...

Sound like an air leak to me, My Splitscreen did excactly the same... Check the inlet gaskets and if its a twin port, the rubber joiners on the inlet itself, even if you have replaced them, the new ones are nowhere near as good as the originals and split realy easy...

The only other thing i can think of. Is when setting the timing, How are you doing it? Strobe or static?
I bought a 1641 for my bug once, And it was impossible to static time because the cam was in wrong. Cant remember what cam it had at that point, But i ended up splitting the case and fitting a 110....

seconding air leak, I ran my old one like that for nearly a year as I couldn't afford to get it fixed it'll probably be the rubber joins on the intake pipe from the carb to the heads, one or both will be split.

Fire it up & give it the WD40 test across the inlet set up, I'm guessing all gaskets etc were replaced when the engine was rebuilt (?)

Leak or carb dude. I have a brand spanking new carb from a T25 CT (essentially a type 1 1600 engine) if you need a good carb

Well it goes! Turned out he had inadvertently replaced the inlet manifold end pieces with the old ones from his beetle so it wasnt sealing where they met the head, could tell as the metal gaskets hadnt been pressed down fully in quite a lot places... Put the correct ones on with new gaskets and away she went, have done near on 50 miles on a little jaunt and no knockings or bangings as yet
