Yes it's a VDO aftermarket unit. I have been told that cruise was not a factory option on right-hand-drive 240s, so maybe the original buyer (or the dealer) thought a factory kit wouldn't fit? It doesn't seem to be working at the moment, but I'll look into that later - not a high priority for now. Cheers John

John,
Probably a vacuum leak, that's usually what gives them trouble. Pretty much every classic Range Rover or Discovery 1 I ever handled as a dealer (00-05) had broken cruise control, and it seemed that it was always down to a split vacuum line.

More work today Wheelarch repairsI wet flatted with 600 paper (just on the runs, very carefully) then 1500 all over the repair and into the adjacent area. Then I buffed with the machine polisher and cutting compound I am fairly pleased at the result. There are blemishes and it's obvious that it's been repaired. If I'd paid for it done professionally I would not be happy with this standard, but as an amateur job with rattle cans it looks OK The "flat" area of paint above the arch will improve with more buffing Showing the narrow lip The dent near the light will hopefully be removed on Saturday. My dent-vanishing-man is coming to see to the 240. RustproofingBefore applying the Dinitrol, I dealt with some surface rust in the boot, in the wheel wells and around the hole drilled for towing wiring. Rustbusters Ltd - who I recommend highly - provided an application diagram for the 200 series estate... ... and the materials. I used the panel wipe to thin the wax to enable spraying. The spraygun on the right comes with their full kit. Drilled application holes in various places (a drill bit and rubber plugs come with the kit) Then time to get very dirty! Spraying on the wax In impact areas, the black protective wax is sprayed over the top And that's it for today! Cheers John

What's the long term intention with this, replacement for the Benz, or permanent addition to the fleet?

John What's the long term intention with this, replacement for the Benz, or permanent addition to the fleet? This is begging for a v8 of some description bmw/lexus 8bangers? It's an addition. For the medium term, I'll just preserve it and enjoy it in standard spec (pretty much). I don't really need an extra car, but I'm justifying it on the grounds that a big estate car with a towbar is a handy thing to have around. Already, my friend has borrowed it to move a garden he he bought on ebay! When my big 164 project is finished, this 240 will be getting a 2.3 turbo intercooler engine and stronger gearbox from a late Volvo 940. Warmed up a bit, that should be 250bhp with good torque, but still keeping the character of the car, which I like. John

More good progress to report, thanks to having time off the day-job and fantastic work from Steve and Nick, who is visiting again. Front endThe headlights were removed to enable cleaning and rustproofing. The left light had seized mounting bolts, which had to be cut off... a tricky job. Nick dismantled and cleaned the lights, making the best pair from various spares I had. Luckily, the lenses and reflectors that came on the car are good. The corner lamps were resprayed internally with chrome paint. Dinitrol applied (sorry for the curse word photo) Plastic battery tray was removed to allow for inspection (no rust) and Dinitrol to be applied 242GT strut braces painted ready for fitting Towbar refurbNick has done an excellent job to transform the towbar from a rusty eye-sore to a smart feature. Before After some serious grinding, wire brushing, rust-killing and filler work The gloss black finish is now so good it's hard to photograph! Rear panel seamThere's bad news and good news here. More rust than we expected when the bumper, valance and towbar were removed. But we have made a good repair thanks to Steve's excellent welding skills. Rust! The rear seam joins three layers of metal. I cut off the bottom skin slightly further back than the middle layer, to enable these two to be welded together before a repair piece is welded in underneath. Spotwelds drilled out and bottom skin removed Here I'm peeling off the middle layer Lower two layers welded together Luckily, most of the top layer of the seam is OK. Here I have cut out the rusty areas... ... and made repair panels The lower repair panel (left half) being fitted Here's our Ste welding! I feel honoured that a young man who'll go on to do great things with classic cars did his first ever bodywork welding on my 240! Filled gaps with bridging filler, trimmed and sanded From underneath Primed Seam sealer applied Painted Dinitrol applied I also applied lots of rustproofer the the other side of the seam, from inside the boot. Starting reassembly All for today, but more to come soon! Cheers Nick, Steve and John

Hi, More progress to report WheelsRefurbing the damaged wheel centres for the Gallaxies Rear suspensionThe handling has been dramatically improved. I could feel that one of the panhard rod bushes was worn I replaced both bushes with poly I also fitted a OE GLT rear anti-roll bar which, for some reason, was omitted on GLT estates with Nivos. Fittings... ...installed CDI'm upgrading to a 940 sound system. Nick installed the CD changer and routed the cables, although we ran out of time for installing the head unit because of the complication of wiring through the graphic equaliser. BodyworkUnfortunately, the dent removal man let me down, but we still got on well improving the bodywork. Nick went over most of the car cutting and polishing with the machine buffer. Trims have been sprayed satin black (I prefer it to the original grey, which I think looks faded). It's a big boot! Here is the result of our work so far, cleaned up, with with clear front lenses and gallaxies fitted. (Just a few trim bits to refit, when I have time). A hard week's work with Nick and Steve, but very enjoyable and productive. It was tiring (car work in the daytime, pubbing at night) but great fun. Thanks guys!! John

The 240 is getting driven a lot and being very useful, but there is no work ongoing because all efforts are on the 164 project. But, a small update, I got a bargain set of Alfa seats from ebay which will eventually be fitted to give more supportive front seats and better comfort with a split-folding facility in the back. When we get around to it, I'll document the fitting process - but that will be probably be several months away. John

It would have happened already, but I want to keep the Nivomat self-leveling rear shocks (this car works for its living) so I need to fabricate new lower mounting points for the rear shocks. Otherwise, when driving, the shocks would simply pump it back up to the original ride height irrespective of the springs fitted. My spares car will provide rear arms to be modified (amongst a few other parts donated as you can see!) Not a huge job, but all spare time is on my other project at the moment John

Steve serviced the 240 for me yesterday, and changed the injector seals. It runs much better, and needed a large adjustment to the tick-over afterwards, indicating that the old rock-hard injector seals were leaking a lot of air.
I'm hoping that fuel economy will improve now - it would be nice to see 30mpg occasionally!

Yes yes and more yes! I know what you mean about mpg mate, I've been using the Mercedes as my daily due to my back and I've ended up putting in comedy tyre pressures to make 20 quid last just that bit longer!
I love the Alfa interior planned for the estate, would the Volvo headrests fit in them? I don't know why but they are my favourite bit of older Volvos??
