Words cannot describe how much I'd absolutely love a Barkas as a daily driver/camper. I've had a major thing for one for about 10 years now. Sadly I have precisely zero funds Barkas B1000 on Air ride by retromotoring, on Flickr

So *that's* what they are! I had a yellow plastic toy one, that my Auntie brought me back from a holiday in Austria in 1974. Even my Dad, who's an AA man had no idea what it was!

Some good info there folks. Think i need to take up German language !!! Ideally would like to see one in the flesh thats the problem hence this thread? I am in no rush but have a habit of finding gems when i don't look for them? Will finish the Bay and Go camping first but keep an eye open for one in the meantime. If anyone knows of onei can have a peep at then please Let me know.

As above. I have an early 80's camper (well -raising roof) that I currently use as a store -but will shortly be returning to the road as I need to take my Estafette off the road for upgrading.
They are made of seriously thick metal -mine has no real rust at all -despite no rustproofing. Spend any time underneath ( I had too build an exhaust...)and you'll realise that they were well over-engineered.
Engine is a simple 1 litre, 3 cylinder 2 stroke that screams like a banshee. Same as a Wartie- so parts are simple/cheap. I replaced my cylinder head in 30 mins.
2 stroke mixed at fuelup -modern oils mean virtually no smoke after startup. It always starts (although often sounds like it isnt going too) & ticks over easily.
As you can probably guess -I love it!!

I guess. Tip a gollop in then the fuel to mix it -but frnkly -its not bothered. it sat for 12 months and started immed -no issues. I reckon around 50-1 -but it'll tell you. Too much -it smokes (when warm), not enough- it grumbles (you'll soon know). Run it a bit rich to start with -leaning as it loosens up -and you get used to it. Re -unleaded. its Eastern bloc -it'll run on anything. Mines had paraffin through it at one time.

2 or 3 years ago I went through whatever airport is near Leipzig on Ryanair and there was a Barkas fire engine or ground support vehicle (still in service. Might still be there.

Sure -its kinda legal. Its outside -awaiting DVLA to send me a tax disc & number plate. Effectively in a 'no mans land' since I cant really use it on the old plates, cant drive without & don't yet know the new. However- tax is paids for -so yes ,all done. Been over 2 weeks now..
I'll be a stallholder down at the Beaulieu autojumble next month (Second Hand Interesting Things Emporia) & its being loaded as a van. It should be on the stand -or closeby. We'll be kipping in it each night so I'll see how good it really is.
