In the Floating Cars thread, Monzaphil mentioned the Lada Niva Marsh and how it was the first car to reach the North Pole (and not Clarkson in his Toyota). I've had a soft spot for Nivas for years, so I had a little Google... WOW! And apparently you can buy one from Lada too! Thought it deserved a thread of its own.

They float too, which is quite cool. I remember reading about them and all the other wierd Niva variants that were built. Very cool indeed!

Oh my, that is mental. What's the running gear? From what I can find out, the axles are military UAZ items, on an adapted Niva monocoque chassis. The engine is a regular 1.7 Niva lump, but apparently some (possibly the Arctic expedition one) had a Lada rotary engine! It's difficult to find tech information about them I've found.

They're certainly a bit more manlier than you're normal run of the mill Chelsea tractor It'd be quite a satisfaction rolling through the town centre in one of them bad boys!

Thats awesome! I've always fancied a Niva, but they're really rare over here and the few that crop up tend to be LHD

There's always one or two Nivas on eBay, and almost always they are RHD. There's two on t'Bay right now, although they are both Spares/Repair cases.

Maybe just bad luck that the few times i've had a wee look for one i've not had much joy! Must try harder I think a lot of the Nivas over here got shipped back to Russia in the late '90s when that sort of thing seemed to really take off. I'm not sure if it still goes on, but Nivas do seem really thin on the ground nowadays. I'd really like one!
