Cheers for the link Jason Got the Watts linkage towers in place yesterday , took a fair bit of chopping about as they are made for a MK2 floor, rear axle will need to come back off for access to weld them in fully . Also started work on the dash/guage cluster, made from 1/2" square section. This mounts on the centre of the bulkhead, will have a flat aluminium panel on the front for an Autometer speedo, Tach, Oil pressure and Water temp, just the basics. Going to re do the steering column bracket in the same square section so it will look nicer than the existing sheet steel bracket and match the guage cluster, all the column, pedal box area will be exposed so will need to look decent . Bought this huge sheet of treadplate for the front floors My grinder has packed up though so cutting it will need to wait for now , was a fairly new but crappy one from B&Q, will invest in a better one this time i think, also my Halfords 2.5T trolley jack sprang a leak yesterday, that was'nt that old either Was fired up to order a sump and engine mounts from Retroford for the Zetec this weekend but had a re-think, realised for the amount of money the Zetec will cost to install and get running i could probably have a 5.0 Ford V8 with a five speed Tremec ;D, will hang fire on the engine bits for now till i decide.

Got the bias pedal box together yesterday, bought new master cylinders, drilled out the pedals ages ago but also drilled out the main body (i like drilling stuff ;D) Today i fabricated a new bracket for the steering column, looks nicer than the sheet metal thing that was there, also the column seemed too long (had been lengthened), shortened the outer tube so the steering wheel is a comfortable distance (using a mega dished AVO wheel), inner shaft is at the local engineer to be shortened to match, should get that back next week. Also started welding up the holes in the bulkhead, planning on feeding all wiring etc through the old fusebox hole in the right hand corner of the bulkhead and keep the rest clutter free. Will probably mount the pots for the master cylinders on a shelf/bracket to the right of the steering bracket, these need to be high for gravity feed to the cylinders so will be up near the screen. Cut the treadplate to fit the passenger side footwell, found i did'nt have enough to do the drivers side so will need to get another bit. Also bought this sexy vertical hydraulic handbrake , will need to find a friendly MOT tester i think ;D

More snail pace progress on this , would maybe get somewhere if i did'nt keep getting distracted restoring old mountain bikes and mincing about with VW Polo's. Anyway, change of direction, after adding up the cost of getting the Zetec in and running (for the power i'd end up with) thought i'd be better ditching that and going for a V8 Picked up this 3.9 Rover thismorning, apparently a reasonable miles good runner, time will tell, told the seller to keep the manifolds and all the EFI stuff as i'll be running a carb and basic dizzy. Best i could have hoped for with the Zetec would have been 170bhp (with twin 45's), this 3.9 stock is about 190, hope to see 220 with a Weber four barrel and headers (should sound like hell unleashed too ;D). Stripped all the vicious fan, air con and power steering guff off it, bonus is motor came out of a manual Discovery so has the flywheel etc, clutch is nackered though. Could'nt resist lowering it into the engine bay to try it out for size ;D, a bit tight in places. Figured that as the car had a Rover fitted before then it should fit without too much hassle, recon a header will be really tight in here though Needing a gearbox now, been looking at LT77's but seem quite hard to find, one on E-bay at the moment but recon the seller is asking a bit much. If anyone has one laying about spare i may be interested

No offence mate but I wouldn't bother with an LT77, they aren't as strong as the later uprated version known as the R380 gearbox. There are more of them about too.
Your 3.9, if it is in good condition will already have about 9.35:1 CR. You can up that if you need to change the pistons. A good set of Stage 2 heads, Viper Stump Puller cam, headers and your 4bbl carb should be good for about 260 bhp and about 270lb's torque. That's a good hi torque set up for a light roadcar and not too expensive to build. It's worth looking up re tuning as you could probably squeeze a bit more out too with a bit of extra money.

Arrrrrggggggggggghhhhhhhhh, cant believe it's been this long since i looked at this thread Gearbox would have been handy but never mind. Got a gearbox off E-bay, it's an LT77 out of an LDV200 which i've since discovered may have the wrong ratios , still stuck for a bellhousing, starting to think the Zetec would be easier to fit anyway. Car has sat out on my drive since about September (under a tarp), got another daily car needing work done so needed the garage, Escort is back in the garage now though, took some pics before i covered it.

v8s are cool , but with out much work you can get 190ish out the zetec on cams carbs and management,
or anything from 200 to around 400 brake with a turbo and management, as a fella on xrtwo.com has just got his mk2 fiesta rolling roaded to 415!!
although a v8 really does have the magic sound,.

Yeah, i'm swinging quite a bit towards the Zetec at the moment, was going to run it on Bike carbs and Megajolt (before i bought the V8), had a few V8's before (Yanks), if i was fitting the Rover it would be mainly for the sound and not the grunt, would be superb though, something loosely resembling a MK4 Escort sounding like the Devils own TVR ;D But If i go with the Rover, fitting will be quite a bit harder, even though it had a Rover before i don't know how i'm going to get a manifold on the right hand side, very tight passed steering etc, engine mounts will need to be fabricated, the LT77 box has a bad name for being mince (i may have the wrong box anyway), having a hard time finding a reasonably priced bellhousing, most importantly if there is anything wrong with the engine (like a slipped liner) it'll be a pretty major setback (harder to find a good Rover V8 than a Zetec) If i go with the Zetec, fitting will be a doddle, manifold is on the left hand side so no steering issues, engine mounts etc available off the shelf, can buy a reconditioned type 9 box, if i fit the Zetec and its a duffer, no worries, just pull another out the scrappy, Zetecs are ten a penny (got the one i have for nowt) I recon 190 brake would be more than plenty for me in this thing, bearing in mind it's a weekend road toy, it's racing days are over (in my hands anyway)

What is the reliability like on the rover v8 compared to the zetec? Rover will have more torque so wont need to work as hard as the zetec etc etc..... need to get a poll going on this!! Whatever you chose its probably gonna be ace, keep up the good work

Whatever you chose its probably gonna be ace, keep up the good work The options are pretty endless it just comes down to how much hassle is involved, the Rover V8 is a reliable motor, it's only weakness really is the liners, if the motor runs hot or overheats the liners slip and the motor is pretty much scrap, i bought my 3.9 untested (which was daft but it was local) so may be spending a whole heap of time and money fitting it to find out it's duff. Zetecs are tough motors, i don't think there would be any worries about the motor being stressed in a car so light (though i think it's a bit heavier than a MK2), i've read that the only competitive Gartracs were ones putting out serious power (like this one was BITD), but i think anything over 170 brake will be ok for the road, i'm keeping the shell pretty much gutted, bearing in mind i'm not really a mental driver, i'm an HGV driver by profession so 60mph feels pretty quick to me ;D
