I've used Plasti-Kote glitter paint for flaking my bike and the Hillman's roof. Its much finer than "proper" metalflake but has worked well enough for me (budget considering). Get a can and have a play/practice and also make sure that its not going to react with whatever clear coat you may put over the top.

You can get the metalflake stuff mixed at halfords, its about £25 a can but it goes a LONG way, you'll probably do a roof with if if you want a fairly "subtle" flake. The flakes themselves are fairly small but stand out a lot when the sun hits them. This is the result of a couple of coats of gloss black followed by a coat of the halfords flake stuff and 3 or 4 coats of acrylic lacquer, all out of an aerosol. It'll be hard to get the flake on evenly (it is a bit forgiving) but I reckon it's doable if you do 3 or 4 very light coats in alternating directions. It leaves a pretty rough finish if you use it like this, so it'll need burying under quite a thick coat of lacquer. You'll struggle to get a really good finish in the lacquer with an aerosol on a panel as big as a roof. I'd suggest your best bet would be to get a couple of big cans and lay down perhaps 5-10 coats over a few days, then flat and buff it.

I haven't got pics of it, but a few years ago there was a Ford Pop/100E/Anglia in a field that had been painted black and had red glitter liberally sprinkled on it for a metalflake effect without the expense. Really wish I had a picture of it, sported a jacked up rear, enormous slotmags and judging by the massive tunnel inside, a very large V8 or similar. Proper late 70s/early 80s custom.

truely oldschool -
you get the glitter in the palm of your left hand, you hold an aerosol of clear lacquer in your right hand. You spray the lacquer onto the panel and blow the glitter into the path of the clear with your lungs....
A chum painted a pedal car this way. Looks surprisingly even.
Trick is to get enough clear on.

Oh and 2K is rubbish for carrying flake. You want either cellulose, lacquer or a specialist product like the flake carrier which HOK sells. Intercoat clear can also be used (non catalysed type)
