+1 for deleting the panel other than that, that's a beautiful E30 . . how is the autotragic holding up with the 2.7l? . . the pre-facelift ones are so much better looking than the later ones . . and thanks for NOT painting the mirrors . . looks great!! The auto box will be fine. Alpina themselves never beefed up the auto boxes on the C2's. These boxes are probably one of the stongest auto boxes ever built TBO. The engine came from a genuine C2 2.7 that was broken a few years back due to rot. It was fully rebuilt (albiet with a standard 2.5 head as the original was sold before I got round to weighing in the money : . It has the proper 2.4TD crank, 325 rods and the custome Mahle Alpina pistons. I will get round to building a proper head one day but it's all more money more money with these things. It goes damn well as it is ;D I kept it auto as it suits the convertible. Had it been a 2 door saloon or a touring I may have converted to manual. I still have the original 2.5 engine in the shed which one day will be rebuilt and placed back in the car for originality value.

no surprise though . . since the whole car is a pre-facelift model . . convertibles had the facelift in 1990 . . Oh, I was getting really confused there But it looks like it's got the lower rear arches even though the rest is prefacelift, bare the headlights. All converibles kept the metal bumpers and early rear lights up to late 1990 and stated. However, all convertibles also got the lower rear arches, in fact it was the convertible that introduced them. When the facelift arrived for model year 88, all e30's then copped the convertible lower style arches. The 'verts did get other facelift parts along the way though despite keeping the metal bumpers and rear lights. Bullseye ellipsoid headlights for model year 88 and then the smiley ellipsoids in 1989 (which this car is). They also inherited the later engine management (Motronic 1.3) and the later cooling systems (header tank on the nearside inner wing as opposed to offside). It confuses so many people, lets not even get into the first of the Tech2 motorsport convertibles which had facelift front vallance and fogs for the sport body kit yet kept the earlier rear lights!!!

Looking good Trev! As already said i think your car does look better off without the plastic plate surround. Let me know if you ever want to get rid as it'll look damn fine on my 2 door

If so, then it will be well within its capabilities with the Alpina engine. Jaguar fitted the same gearbox to the 3.6 litre XJ40 which had 221bhp and 250-odd lb ft stock, which is more than this Alpina unit. The transmissions last vast distances in them. Janspeed made a twin turbo version of the 3.6 litre XJ40 which developed around 300 bhp and well over 300 lb ft without uprating the transmission. There are quite a few around with big miles on their original transmission. The ZF4HP22 is a very strong unit. David

I think these are one of the best auto boxes out there. Originally I had an e34 with this box (1990) then another e34 (1993) with the later adaptive 5 speed and it was a backwards step. Confusion as to what gear it needed, no dipstick so oil changes became difficult without the equipment to check temps etc. (albeit BMW will tell you they never need an oil change ) and generally not as nice to drive. The later steptronics in the e39 are no better. I currently have a 530i sport as my daily and the box isn't as good as the old 4HP22! The one in this e30 has covered 106k, I've changed the oil and filters while the engine was out and it feels a tight as the ever were. Changes are ultra smooth and in sport mode it holds on well. Suits the car perfectly in my opinion.
