As I'm writing this it's pouring down with rain and I feel I might have something to do with it. I've recently prepared the 300 SE to cope with everything summer has to throw at it. And if you believe in Murphy's law this should be enaugh for summer to be cancelled at all. Sorry everyone. If summer does return anytime soon it should see the 300 SE not breaking a sweat. And here's why: First up was taking the radiator out. While the spanners were still warm to the touch I threw in a new one of these: And boy did it need it: And here's the main reason for today's update. A new, slightly bigger radiator: It's from the smaller W124 series. For reasons unknown to me this is the biggest radiator to fit my engine. I think it was installed if a customer chose to order a new 300E with automatic transmission, a/c, a tow-bar and other options which put stress on the engine like headrests made from concrete maybe. It fits beautifully after a bit of gentle persuasion: The result is that I can now drive the car through city-traffic on a hot summer's day with the a/c on and the needle barely passes 90°C. Success!

When your older S-Class develops a nerve-wrecking squeaky rattle coming from the dashboard, the first course of action is to remove the lower dashboard trim and have a good look around. Since nothing obvious can be seen while you're head-down in the foot-well you start applying self-adhesive foam to various places you're sure are the cause of said rattle. Put everything back together and embark onto a testdrive. Make this face after 30 seconds: The rattle is still there. You localize the sound coming from the dash where it meets the a-pillar. Then of course you pull out the dashboard-speakers, apply more foam, carefully put everything back together and embark onto another testdrive. Make this face after 30 seconds: The rattle is still there. After that you remove the lower dashboard trim again as well as the speakers. To get a fighting chance of finding that noise you pull the instrument-cluster, too. Have a cuppa. Then a testdrive. Make this face after 30 seconds: The rattle is still there. Now it's time to pull the centre-console which takes you a considerable amount of time. Watch the neighbours shake their heads as they observe the pile of bits you're pulling from the car gets bigger and bigger. Politely ignore passers-by asking "Are you breaking it?". With an interior now looking like a bomb went off you embark onto another testdrive. Surely with so many parts now out of the car the rattle should have gone too. Make this face after 30 seconds: The rattle is still there. Think long and hard what to do next. Spot a bottle of paint-sealant in the garage right next to the fuel canister for your lawn-mover. Consider spilling the latter onto the whole car instead of the former with a lighter in your hand. Use said lighter to light a fag (optional) instead of the car. Have a relative bring you another cuppa and hear him say "You know what? I'll join you on your next testdrive. Maybe I can hear where that awful rattle is coming from.". Laugh at him, right in his face. Then look at the car and fight the urge to sell the bits you've already taken off on ebay. Embark onto another testdrive with no hopes. Make this face after 30 seconds: The rattle is still there. Hear your relative saying "It's not coming from the dashboard, my Son." Watch him putting his thumb onto the FIRE EXTINGUISHER MOUNTED TO THE DRIVER'S SEAT which immediately stops the rattle. Take a piece of that self-adhesive foam and put it between the fire extinguisher and its mounting-bracket. Enjoy a test drive in total silence. Fight the tears of joy. Ignore the fact that it'll take you well into the small hours and put everything back into the car. Make a mental note to not forget Dad's upcoming birthday and consider taking him to the Goodwood Revival and cover all the expenses on the two-week round-trip.

Brilliant. We've all been there. My aunt loaned my dad an old Escort one time when his car was off the road. Stated when handing over the keys there's a bit of a whine and vibration once you get over 70mph. I just turn up the radio so I can't hear it! Considering this was a very rusty Mk1 Escort it scared the life out of my dad. He dreaded driving it and couldn't wait to hand it back. Definitely didn't take it anywhere near 70mph in case something dropped off.

Your Mercedes is such a lovely car.
I have a similar loathing for rattles.
My car had a metallic buzzing rattle which I could not find anywhere. It sounded like it was coming from the driver's side 'B' pillar - or perhaps the sunroof. I have had the cantrail off on the driver's side in search of it - and prized the headliner away and squeezed foam in between the headliner and the roof to stop the rattle. Believe me, that too a while! I have even removed the sunroof and replaced it. None of this worked.
Then, yesterday, I happened to sit in the back of the car with the engine running. Same maddening buzz. BZZZZZZZZZ! ARGH!
For some reason I touched the metal door lock button - and the buzzing stopped. I removed the top half of the door card and put a tiny blob of grease on the lock button - and no more rattle! I had been looking for that rattle for two years!
It is strange how sound travels in cars.

Hey Mr RR
Your blog is terrific - as is your car. Well done, you write so well and your enthusiasm for the W126 is infectious!
I had one about 12 years ago as a temporary financial stop-gap, then sold it when life improved. Now I want one for fun and nostalgia and am looking to buy within the next few weeks!
I've learnt alot from your experiences, so please keep it up!

We have new TÜV! Albeit with a few advisories. The engine has developed the classic oil leak coming from the front of the engine which I'll address over the winter when it gets a full cylinder head rebuild. The oil consumption has become worse and it's about time we do something about it.

Kilo's now? These stately old ladies are becoming worthy, but very scarce collector's pieces. Well done and many happy trips!

Kilo's now? These stately old ladies are becoming worthy, but very scarce collector's pieces. Well done and many happy trips! Thanks! And funny that you've mentioned it. I took this picture a couple of nights ago: It shows us going at 120 Km/h on the foggy Autobahn. This picture marks the 100.000th Kilometre we've travelled together bringing the total up to roughly 355.000 Km. I got that same green sticker this morning for my scooter, too. No advisories, only an advice to check tyre pressure. Where do you live now, cologne or d'dorf? Ta, good for you! I'm still close to both cities these days. I work in Düsseldorf, most of my friends are in Cologne. And I've decided to move to the countryside roughly in the middle between the two.

Dormagen is lovely, isn´t it? More like Erkelenz. If you're in the region one of these days give me a shout and we'll have a beer or two. Or just ring the bell. The town is so small and I'm the only one with so much old tat in the drive... so you can't miss me.

Awesome 126er! It's inspiring to see it so well cared for... makes me kinda feel bad about being more lenient about my Audi, hah. A friend is always trying to get me to buy his green 300SE 126... maybe I should do it, hah. Got the chance to drive another friend's citrus yellow 280 SE a few weeks back, very, very cool! Greetings from Bedburg! I work in Düsseldorf too, hah.

I know there's usually some stuff going on in Krefeld, at Mo's Diner... some regular classic meets and such. Also, here in Bergheim-Niederaussem a few friends of mine run a Ice-Cream parlor that caters to car enthusiasts, called Cafe477. There's often some cool stuff going on. We're actually hosting a event for Oberklasse cars on the 23. July: Click for a flyerOr a bit further towards the Ruhrgebiet, in Recklinghausen there's Garage 10 which also often holds classic car events...

The US car guys are quite active around here, but Classic Remise is always a good bet. Has the advantage of indoorsyness, too if the weather is bad...

Good to see the 300 se hasn't been totally usurped by the young pretender. Ps sorry for not even getting anywhere close to your name on the Porsche thread. Must have been the bottle of red I was polishing off!!
