Corsa columns are pretty popular in the rallying world. A friend has one on his Sunbeam. Lots of Escorts use them too.

Doesn't help with your question but my first car (many years ago) was an R4 (hatch obvs not van). Loved it. really comfy, dead simple (even for back then) so easy to maintain, surprising amount of interior space for the size. Built like a tank too - found some mud (ok, quite a lot) on a country lane and half spun it into a drystone wall - horrendous bang - got out expecting the left rear corner to be wrecked - nope, had just bent the end of the (metal) bumper slightly. Awesome in the snow too - all the weight is over the front wheels so super traction, the rear just followed.
Oh well, enough reminising.
Love the idea btw. Would be really distinctive.

I've rolled a complete car (with the help of a couple of friends obvs) - rolled the window down and gently rolled it onto a (upright) spare wheel into the window aperture. No damage done.

It might just be the drains need cleaning out, you probably have to open it to get to them though. Same thing on my Mk1 Octavia - the drains were blocked. If you can find where it drains to, you may well be able to clear them without opening it. Have a look between the door hinges - that's where I found them.

Dave at Tornado Motorsport (near Derby) tornadomotorsport.co.uk/ might be worth a try. Did the cage on my rally car to my spec and did a lovely job.

a sump that says "race line" on it. Quick Google search and wow. 575 English pounds for a sump ffs!! Builder clearly liked spending money Might have been out of necessity to get the engine low enough to fit under the bonnet - my mate's Westfield was like that. Good one on the MOT pass for just the cost of a TPS. You are quite the jammy barsteward.

The Visa diesels and GTis were four stud IIRC. You recall correctly. 4x108, 66mm centrebore.

2L Duratec - there's potential there. A mate has a Westfield with one - just shy of 300 bhp (N/A) - redline somewhere north of 9k. What are your plans ? A bit of NOS maybe - just to be different ? Its a Zetec if it's a ST170 engine even though it says Duratec on the cam cover, completely different kettle of fish to to a Duratec and not quite as much potential power wise but still a great engine. Ah - thanks for being confusing Mr Ford.

Cock.
I feel your pain but this project was always going to be a voyage of discovery. Been there, thought b0ll0cks to it, carried on anyway, fixed it, loved the result and and am still loving it 7 years later.
Does kind of sound like the head gaskets aren't up to the job of all the boost you're throwing at them. Don't suppose there are any other gasket options ? If not, having the block machined for wire rings seems the likely solution. I know - hassle, cost, etc, but a proven solution on high boost applications.
Take a few to think about it. Times of high emotion is not the best time to be making decisions.
