Finally got round to doing some more today, although phil did all the work today (i don't think he trusts me with a grinder, and quite rightly so!)
So he started chopping the rust out which turned out to be a little worse than we first thought.. piccies!
We had to get some spotweld drill bits for this bit to keep it neat as we didn't want to take out the strengthening plate that holds all the strut in place.
Had to cut out this box section too, it wasn't rusted quite all the way through but it would be stupid to leave it in to get worse so this got the chop too.
So this is it all out looking up throught the arch,
Next was to clean all the edges of paint and anything else on there so we have some shiney metal
Then we found a little bit of rust in the strut top which i had tried to sand and kurust a year ago but it had bubbled back through bigger since then so the grinder took it back to metal and a screwdriver punched the rust out, what is now a hole!
The plan will to be drop a blob or two of weld in it once the other side is clean too but the stut will have to come out so it'll get done after the rest of the welding.
Finally some weld throught etch primer to keep it nice and this side is prepped.
Then we had a break and stuck this on... It's quite deserving of this stick me thinks!
This is the metal phil cut out we will be using it as a guide for the patches, it will need 4 as it will be having all the seams back in it.
I thought it would be fun to measure how far in the 30cm MOT limit the hole was quite well in the fail parameters by the looks of things!
Anyway next i needed to scrape more underseal and prep the inside of the arch for welding so i got started with the heat gun, a scraper and no gloves. I didn't get far before hitting my knuckle on a fresh edge of metal, at first i didn't take any notice but then when i realised my hands were covered in blood i thought i'd better get a plaster, however this was a fruitless effort.... Exhibit A
We had to get the superglue out! But by the time phil had got superglueing I'd seen too much blood and passed out (first time ever!) But i got to eat cake when i came too so it was fine. But phil wouldn't let me do anymore underseal scraping so that's as far as we got today
Oh and my cut looks pathetic now it's not a waterfall of red... Exhibit B
More tomorrow though, preferably with gloves on
