There's one of these comes out early in the morning when it's dry when I'm riding my bike down by the lake in Berlin. It's red, funnily enough. Sounds fantastic when the driver gives it some welly. It's an inspiration.
I'll be watching your thread with interest. Thanks for sharing.

I am also disappointed to find GN has left. I am normally more of a reader than a poster and I too have found loads of inspiration from his posts. Does he have a name or a handle or a hashtag or is this something which cannot be divulged? Mike 1961grumpynorthener Thank you, Strikey

Assuming you are stick welding? Looks great BTW I had a lecturer at college who wouldn’t let me call it stick welding ‘It’s manual metal arc’ So guess what i referred to it as every time he was in earshot? 🤣 But then he was an a£53hole Of course it's called stick welding because the electrode always sticks to the workpiece. Lovely bit of kit though, Looking forward to seeing it in action!

That horrible red numberplate totally destroys the look of the car... needs an old square black/silver one to compliment it's "survivor" look IMO. Would love to have it in my fleet of Peugeots! (all modern unfortunately) Bad luck for us Germans. When it's registered, it gets horrible black lettered plates. No escape. Yes, we're stuck with the modern letters which are presumably easier for ANPR. It's a shame that we can't just have the old shaped letters and numbers. Great looking car, by the way!

Assume that is to get to minimum height for the C&U regs of the time but boy is that ugly ! Would it be an option now to leave at the lower height and fix in place with modern lights ? James Speaking as an ex-G15 owner, I can assure you that gravity, time and metal oxide will do all that for you without having to fit modern lights.

Looks like the Princess standing next to it has the same paint job as the Zephyr.
There was a bloke in my village who bought one of these when he won on the football pools. The story goes that he had a Hillman Imp before and took his girlfriend out in the new car to impress her. He popped into the petrol station to fill up. Unfortunately the Zephyr has a bigger tank than the Imp and he had to leave the car at the petrol station and walk home to get some more money.

you always depart not to the road side....save reason... Yeah I got that part, but in that case, why not have the seat on the left as normal in Europe (and not like us here with our minimal market for vehicles)! I went hitchhiking in France and northern Italy about 40 years ago and the Italians were still driving around in lorries with right hand drive. I took a lift with a RHD lorry and the driver explained that when you're driving on Alpine roads with a sheer drop on one side, you can get close to the edge if the lorry is RHD. And not too close...... The route he was driving was on narrow roads and the driver complained vocally about oncoming trucks with left hand drive. HTH

My trusty trolley jack seems to have lost a little oil over the years because it doesn't go up as high as it used to. I was at a spares shop the other day and the closest thing they had looked like oil for hydraulics in a JCB and such like. Would this have been the right stuff? Anyway, here's an elegant jack from 1945....

Hi, Merryck
I have just had my MGB gearbox done at Heathrow Transmissions, near er... Heathrow. I had rebuilt my box myself and messed it up but they have sorted it out. Got the car assembled back together yesterday and had a first test drive. Excellent! Full recommendation.

I wonder where that was built, I doubt its ever possible to register it in Germany or the UK as its so wildly modified? If the intention is purely dragracing there´s no need for road legality in germany - as long as it doesn´t get driven on public roads. But the seller isn´t really aware of all the mods, so it might have been built elsewhere... Maybe he was running it on German red numberplates. You can get plates for older vehicles, a bit like British trade plates, which can go on your fleet of old cars. You're restricted to driving to shows, events and workshops and the car is supposed to be standard.....

Ah, the CX!
It must have been summer 1980, I was hitch-hiking in France with a mate. We had been standing in the pouring rain in Lyons for about six hours when a lady stopped in one of these. Inside it was a bit scruffy to say the least, torn seats and door cards but we were very glad to be on the move again. She drove like the wind despite thunderstorms and heavy rain and as we came over the top of a hill into Paris outskirts, Visage - Fade to Grey was on the stereo and the city was lit up by the evening sun from under the clouds. Always think of the CX when I hear that song.
Later, I had to tow a glider trailer (big glider, 2-seater, tandem axle trailer) in heavy snowy weather and borrowed a friend's CX. It went like a dream running straight with no scary moments at all.
Great great cars, good to see one saved!

I remember seeing one of the cabrios, post box red, with four lads hacking round the middle of East Berlin, back in the mid 1980's before the Wall fell. I think it was the only time I saw one before the end of the GDR.
A mate suggested buying one of the estates a few years later. It looked OK but those side windows were yellowing perspex and were probably more expensive than the car was worth. Another missed opportunity.

Morning all,
I rebuilt the gearbox in my MGB unsuccessfully (slips out of gear, noisy first, overdrive doesn't do its stuff) and I have decided to cut my losses and have it rebuilt by a professional who knows what they're doing. Unfortunately I live in Germany and the car and box are in my garage.
How can I get it to the rebuilders in England? I have been quoted €150-£150 or so for the journeys. At that price I could fly over with it in my luggage!
Has anyone taken a big piece of a car on an aircraft?

Bought an MGB in 1988 with no overdrive. Bought a second hand overdrive box in 2000 Bought a rebuilt overdrive in 2004 Bought various important gearbox bits 2005-2015 Rebuilt the box and fitted the overdrive to the box 2015 Fitted the box and overdrive to the car 2017.
Overdrive doesn't engage. Curse word.

It looks to me like an MGB hardtop. It is probably a copy of a works hardtop with a trendy vinyl roof effect. The shape looks about right and the catches at the header rail are in the correct place.
It's much too far forwards on the car. They probably had to wind the windows down to get it to sit like that in the first place.

Good looking car!
Those mirrors: See if you can find convex mirrors to put in them. I have a pair of similar mirrors on my MGB and they were useless with plane mirrors. With convex mirrors you can see better than with door mirrors. Motorbikejumbles are a good source.

Hi, Colin,
I'm with you on the van, I'm never sure where A55 stops and A60 begins.
I also thought Rapier or Gazelle at first, sticking with Gazelle though!

You could try KFZ Teile 24 (https://www.kfzteile24.de/index.cgi). They have two places, one in the far east of the city but the other is in Spandau, Brunsbüttler Damm which is probably not too far out of your way on your way to the Berliner Ring.
Probably too late....
