Speaking of gapping...managed to sneak a few minutes in the garage today, even though its Christmas day. The rings i have are not pre-gapped, so they need very careful filing so that when they are fitted in the bores, they meet the factory specs. I tried out the top ring in cylinder one. Fitted at 90 degrees, the spun round so it sat in the bore as if on a piston. Then i used a piston to push it down square in the bore, approx 1" down which is where most of the ring's work is done. It was very tight, basically no gap what so ever. So i pulled it back out and gave it some fettling. I used a decent file clamped in my vice. I only filed from out to in, so i didn't de laminate the chrome off the front face. Quite a laborious process, but first one sorted. Only 15 to go! Ring and vice Fitted after gapping

Knowing that all those pistons are going into one engine is quite satisfying for some reason. It is until you realise you have 16 rings that need careful gapping. Why couldn’t it have a 3 cylinder? 🤪

Stick pistons in dishwasher next time........ I’ve tried that in the past but it didn’t do much. Lucky I’m not married!

I better finish it quick then! That's what we are all thinking! Everyone wants to see the end product of this fascinating build. I get back to Lancashire frequently, so I'm sure we can arrange something. I’d like to finish in by June 12th as then it will be the sixth year anniversary of me starting this thread.

Excellent, now we just need a hgv,Capri, datsun/Toyota and a stunt driver! Do you still live up that way? And a load of large card board boxes. Do you mean to drive through like the sweeny or father ted?

When the car is done I’m planning on taking it on a road trip around that area. Any idea where the hgv roll over, Capri crash and Datsun/Toyota crash were?

I might not get chance to post on Christmas day, so Christmas Eve is close enough. Christmas morning, 30 years ago, early shift (6am-2pm), subtly decorated and ready for patrol. I was driving D822 GEC that day. I’ll have to do an anniversary shot tomorrow! Not sure I have any blue tinsel.

Finished wrapping all my Christmas presents, and then managed to get a few hours in the garage. I rebuild the second carb. Much faster this time. Then i reunited it with the inlet manifold. Then i started cleaning up the old pistons using some very fine scotch brite stuff, petrol and the old piston rings as a scraper. Messy and very time consuming. Went through so many pairs of gloves and i was fecking freezing. Plus i absolutely reek of fumes now. My overalls and trainers are outside the back door as they were stinking the kitchen out. Not good when others are trying to prepare Christmas food! Dirty vs clean Once cleaned, i gave them a liberal coat (well the steel parts) in some corrosion preventative spray. This will get cleaned off before it gets reassembled.

Those screws should fly out with some Irwin bolt removers , mega car by the way Yeah, very cool car. Something about the colour and the shabby yet solid appearance just makes it look so right. Looking forward to seeing more updates and have this bookmarked.

Great stuff.
The previous owner must have really liked yellow to paint not only the plenum top, but also the sub frame!

Great to see an update and such quality repairs. Nothing wrong with over bracing, better than haveing to sort out the alignment if something does move.
