I think VXR8 prices have already dropped against a year ago. Not a lot, and there is certainly no panic selling.
I'd buy one.......actually I did, although when prices were higher.

I think that you are being very reasonable when you explain your working hours particularly. Not many of us can manage to be as restricted as you (assuming non coronavirus time).
Its not illegal to fix your car at home, its not illegal to make noise, if it was nobody could do building or other DIY projects, and nobody could cut the grass. Your noise being from a different activity is your choice, too many people these days think that everyone else should live the same life as they choose to just because they live in the same area.
I'm no expert but I guess that the law is not on her side if you are keeping it to reasonable hours.

I saw that, very impressive, but I'm going to guess that the cost will be thousands for a one off.
Please let us know if you find out.

Downloaded the v112 form for mot exemption . I taxed my bike last year, it had just passed 40 years old and I hadnt been for MOT. I had to pay for the tax but didnt use a V112, just explained to the lady who taxed it no problem without MOT. What I'm saying is that I don't know if the form is required, maybe it should be and the lady didnt know but I had no problem. Free tax next month though if I understand correctly.

It was a bit chilly that day, to be honest we suffered a lot, it wouldnt be ideal for a post apocalypse world any real distance from the equator.

Only mentioned once, but more pressure than you might imagine is necessary.
To cut steel you need enough pressure to actually cut, too little and you just rub, creating heat and not holes.
It's all about heat control, hence the good advice to go slowly too.
You need to see swarf being cut out, and just lighten right off for the break through or you'll snap it.

Btw, I bought the evolution file off Ebay, whoever was cheapest, later had an issue with one of the arms and contacted evolution direct, the customer service was excellent

I've only read the first couple of posts, I just want to say that grumpynortherner is bang on, much the same as my methods.
Wire wheels polish rust, ink for getting the thick off maybe but that's it. I bought an evolution power file and I'm happy with it. Where you can't file just get stuck in by hand with coarse Emery.

just look at it like warning a neighbour about a massive pot-hole down the road.... it a form of positive public service outing such tosh! It's just people whinging about something they don't enjoy because they are incapable of changing a channel. Or maybe they enjoy having something to complain about. Might as well be watching Love Island or whatever. While I respect that the rules are the rules I see this a bit differently. If Love Island comes on I'll turn it off, and not whinge about it online as its not important to me and people can watch what they want. The difference is that GWG is about a subject I'm passionate about. Not only that, I'm also passionate about how our hobby is painted to the rest of the public. When I feel disappointed about how my favourite subject being presented in a way I don't like, I turn to a place where I know everyone else has the same passion and discuss it. I accept that some people may disagree, and maybe that will help me to feel less disappointed by seeing the good points. On the other hand I may find that its not just me and other people agree, and feel better about venting. I think discussion is healthy, as it turns out this thread highlighted lots of good TV / Youtube, so its not that everyone is negative for the sake of it, they are genuine views spoken among fellow enthusiasts. Just my thoughts.

Thanks for all the advice. Sounds like the size of generator I’d need would cost an arm and a leg Looks like I’ll have to figure something else out. Not at all. The thing that stands out is that if you want to run an inverter welder you need to spend more, so don't.... Using a transformer machine is much lower risk and much lower cost. I know they are not fashionable now but transformer machines are reliable and relatively simple and robust. I welded 188 new pieces of metal into my Carlton, there is a thread on here somewhere. I used a low budget welder and a £100 second hand generator and a bit of care. The quality of the welding wasn't compromised, good penetration achieved in the heavier chassis sections. don't be put off, it is possible on a small budget. A friend of mine is doing the same to weld his MK1 Astra with no problems.

I'm no expert but I would agree with Colin that you risk damaging an inverter MIG due to electronics, generator output is highly unstable if you are pushing it beyond its ideal limits. I'd use a transformer machine.

Yes, I've had quite a bit of experience doing a huge amount of welding on my Carlton GSi in the garage in my allotment.
I used a 150A SIP transformer MIG.
A friend loaned me a decent size 5.5KVA diesel generator, which promptly ran on its own oil (max revs & impossible to turn off) and died, I was desperate to progress so risked my new 2.3KVA generator. It worked, but after maybe 200mm of weld went up in smoke. 2.3KVA was definitely too small.
I then bought a used 3.8KVA generator (cant remember the brand, cheap one) and welded up the rest of the project over the next couple of years. I don't think this is ideal, but it worked, I did take the precaution of never pushing it duty cycle wise, I always did some work, then let it run with no load to get plenty of cooling air through, then periodically turned it off for a while to cool.
My conclusion is that it definitely is possible without spending crazy money, my generator cost £100. I would buy the biggest you can, but experience says that 3.8KVA will manage.
Beware the misleading badged generators being sold currently, with some sellers telling lies, others just not being open. My friend bought one of them last week, model number included 8500 and he was lead to believe it was 8500W. There was no labelling at all on it about output. It could barely run anything so he investigated it, seems to be 2000W max, and as its supposedly 3 phase and has 3 240 outlets I suspect that the 2000W is all phases combined, so only a few hundred W from one outlet. Only any use for lighting. To be honest it was obvious to me just by the physical size that it wasnt 8500W but he hadnt realised.

Mmmmm Salvage Hunters - Classic Cars : Last week they went to see a Fiat 500 which had been off the road for 4 years having failed its MOT on excessive corrosion. They took it for a test drive on public roads and said that it was ok because the car was now MOT exempt . . . . . I don't want to start getting to negative on RR but I noticed that and couldnt believe my ears! They even commented on how long the failure list was. These idiots have just educated most of their viewers, who are not experts, that once a car is MOT exempt there is no requirement to make sure its safe before using it on the road, which we know isnt true. How is it possible that two car dealers don't know that? Other than that I don't mind the program. I havent seen WD Dream cars, but it sounds worth a watch so thanks for posting.

The middle one is the only one I recognise, a Honda CD185 or 200 Benly. Great bikes, I would definitely use one on the roads today.

I had the same situation with my motorbike last year.
I insured it, went to the post office, explained and taxed it there and then without MOT. I used it a few times during summer then declared SORN. I had no problems. It was that simple.

Choose one of the diesels that will run on veg oil and buy it from Costco. I did it for three years in a golf. You have to choose old fashioned diesel, ideally before direct injection and with a suitable pump for example Bosch.

I've been following too, brilliant achievement worth waiting years for. I need to order the new T shirt though, the old one is out of date now you've got into the fives.
My only disappointment is to have never seen the car live. I don't know what you will be doing next Andy but if you decide to run the car in the UK any time I hope to be there.

This all makes me think of the famous short movie c'était un rendez-vous. I'm sure most of you know it.
Its so tempting to do something similar, but in the modern camera filled world you are almost guaranteed to end up in court with a huge list of charges.
