Those front latches don't do anything apart from stop the sunroof flying off. They don't clamp anything down. They just lock into a hole on the wind break. If the sunroof leaks it'll 9 times out of 10 be the seal I might have some spare ones off a spare sunroof I bought. I'll have a look at the weekend!

Right so whats been happening with this then? New gasket set from Amal so the carb was rebuilt. Fitted an extra inline fuel filter as a precaution. Fixed a fuel leak. Bits came from Czech Republic so I fitted a new carb-airbox boot and spacer for the carb. But the bike still kept dying almost every time I went out for a ride. And each ride was getting shorter and shorter. Out of sheer boredom, when it died at my house, I decided to charge the battery up for 5 mins. Well lo and behold even when it was hot she fired straight up! Hmmm. Quick check of the multimeter and the battery was dropping 2v with the ignition on and wouldn't accept a charge from the bike. Which basically meant the bike would only run until the battery had ran out of juice, then it would never start again until the battery sitting had gained enough voltage to get it going again. So new battery bought, plugged in and away! fired right up and i've done a couple of longer rides and its performed admirably. Nice to finally have an end to the stress. Although i'm sure i've lost some weight from all the pushing home i've been doing? New carb set up has been brilliant and feels a lot more responsive anyway. Decided now was time to think about doing a wee trip somewhere. Although i'd need to work out a way of carrying some stuff. Years ago I made a rack for my Honda C90 out of some old school chair legs and never used it. It was actually pretty close to the CZ mounting points so I went ahead and modified it. I bent the legs out to fit the wider frame and welded on some angled supports at the back of the frame and presto, one rack. It'll support my 72kg anyway so should do for a tent/sleeping bag I'm still to paint it. Think i'll do it the same colour as the bike...

Compared to a 944 steering wheel? No, not at all. I never marketed it as a miniature steering wheel. Apologies for the misconception.

As per the title, the inlet and exhaust manifold I pulled from a spare engine I have and simply don't need. The back box is in really good condition and was replaced with a stainless jobbie so no need for it. Collection from Aberdeen preferred but would probably courier them if need be.
Inlet - £20
Exhaust - £20
Back Box - £45

Nobody, and I mean nobody near me rides around on a 30 years old Czechoslovakian motor bicycle. Apart from me of course... I'm that stupid.

Changed the steering wheel in my 944 so no need for this anymore! Originally from a MK1 Mx5 but obviously will fit any momo PCD boss. Actually quite a nice understated wheel and is in the best condition i've ever seen one anyway. £40 collected from Aberdeen or £50 posted. Cheers! (Aplogies for the rubbish photo, photobucket is really trying my patience.)

Couldn't wait to get this fitted. Suits the interior much better than the flat face momo before. Also forgot to mention, for fitting the rear valance, I wanted to be able to fit it myself without faffing about. I bought these 'cage nuts'. I'm sure they are for computers. But basically since the holes are rectangular they clip in place and you can just thread the bolts in without having a helper on the inside threading the nuts on. Obviously I had to buy a bag of 50 so if anyone is considering doing the same thing i'll give them out for the cost of postage.

Pick it up and take it out for a good drive and let that be the deciding factor. It does look good Thats the plan, pick it up on Monday and remind myself how good it is. I've been driving the 518 for the last 4 months and it's hardly inspiring!

Well heres some news! The car is back from paint. But in between times... I made some infills for the indicators where there wont be an overrider to cover the gap. Then countersunk them and bought some black bolts. I just painted these black. Bought a new air dam from Porsche, at a shockingly reasonable price of £12. These stupid nubs were all cracked. They all got fibreglassed and repaired, then I sunk some M4 nuts into the backside of them and glued them in place. There should be rivnut type things but they always get broken. Then I plonked everything back on the car, replacing every nut, bolt and washer that I used with new. I painted all the bracketry black too. Also bought a momo mod7 which I still need to fit and i've bought a mechless radio to replace the tatty old pioneer. And then this is how it ended up after 3 weeks of paint (kept getting reactions)... Obviously this is the new rear valance fitted too Overall I'm really really impressed with the job they've done and the price was reasonable. For a non standard colour they've done an epic job matching it and blending it in. I actually cant believe how good it looks. Obviously still need to fit the fogs but I still need to polish the glass before I put them in. But now i'm not sure what to do with it... It looks incredible but I can't reeeeally afford to keep dropping big money into it. Plus it sits on the driveway during the week when I don't use it and I do feel bad for it. I pick it up on Monday, and when I do i'll have to decide its fate, quite sad isn't it? What do I do? Also, I wrote a story for Flussig Magazine about my trip to Skye last year, which is here if you have time for a read: www.flussigmagazine.com/11/post/2017/03/skye-trip.html

This looks so at home on a track. Has something caused it to run weak or has it been running like that since it was tuned last? Also what do you make of the ARB stiffeners? I made for mine but I did a heap of other things at the same time so couldn't really make out if they worked or not

Ive picked myself up another one if these! its got a poorly engine but is super clean, the yreg looks ok but is rotting away underneath. just debating whether to swap the engines over or get a k3-ve to drop in.... i don't like the power steering that's fitted to the newer car the yreg gives good feed back when hooning it through the lanes, PAS just feels numb Noice. If I had the money i'd buy one for myself. Unfortunately theres absolutely none of these up here. Hers has PAS and its exceptionally light. I bet an absolutely pov spec one with manual steering etc would be brilliant.

Wee update on how this is getting on. The bike developed an issue of when warm, wanting to die at traffic lights. It would idle for a certain amount of time then just die and refuse to kick into life again. It felt like a fuelling issue, not an electrical issue. I changed the spark plug up a heat range from what was in it before and it seems to run better. Then I figured out that the cold start lever (that floods the carb pretty much) was very floppy and with the bumps and vibration could drop and cause the engine to die from over fuelling. Well I reshaped the cam on the arm and bent the spring a bit and it holds it off tight which is good. It starts first kick from cold but once its hot it eventually just decides to die. I tried this theory in the shed when I was setting the mixture screw. I had it idling absolutely spot on, then out of nowhere it died and wouldnt start again, at all. It had a spark. Then when I thought I had fixed it all, it died 2 miles from my house and I had to do the age old walk of shame. I've only had to do that 2 times in my life and its naff. So I pulled the carb off to have a look. Its full of grit. Couldnt even see through the pilot jet. Main jet looked new however. What I did notice that i've never see before is that there was another pilot jet, but it was a blank? I've bought a gasket kit for a 600 series amal carb but the bowl gasket is for a single pilot, which is where the blank was. I'd love to see a parts diagram from an Amal 625 to figure out why there is a blank but I haven't found any info on it at all. As well as that the float was catching on the casting of the bowl so I shaved some material from the float seam and it seems to be clear. I've also bought a new carb boot and some more carb bits from jawashop. As well as a bicycle speedo as I am not a fan of the speedo reading 35 when I'm doing 50. I knew it felt like I was going faster than it said haha. So this week i'll bung the carb in the ultrasonic cleaner at work and give everything a thorough cleaning. I'm going to fit an inline fuel filter to try and help too. I'll get the carb rebuilt and hopefully the problem will fix itself. Otherwise I guess I could look into the coil but its been replaced so. Retapped the holes for the tank bolts and replaced them with new. Both rattled out during the week!

Well as an update to this thrilling thread, i'm getting the insurance for £546.20. With both insurers, the clerk on the phone hadn't specified that it was a classic car. Supposedly this is what takes the extra off. The bloke then added 1000 more miles to my estimate and it took another couple of quid off. Thats with an agreed value etc.
So after all that stress, the case is now closed!

Have you tried phoning some of the more specialist brokers rather than relying on online comparisons? I insured my new car last week, cheapest online quote was £320, ended up paying £295 after making some phone calls. Yup. Tried about every classic insurer under the sun. Most of them won't Insure under 25s, but otherwise I've not had a price less than 800 odd. I've never had to pay that much for insurance in my 4 years of driving. I have 4 years ncb. I've found with comparison sites that they'll quote very loosely so it's cheap and jumps to the top of your results, and once you are a bit more thorough it just goes up and up... Hastings are one for this, and they even admitted it on the phone when she gave me a near double quote. The quote in question was actually done on the insurers own website, and was way cheaper than any comparison site had given!

Just hold your ground if i was you . Get some names and keep badgering them , phone everyday and ask to speak to the same person , otherwise i can see them just ignoring the problem and hoping you go away instead of actually providing service and sorting out your problem . I have found with any call centre type place that most of them are just interested in passing you on to soemone else so they can chalk up they have delt with another customer , whether they actually sorted your problem or not . One place i was passed around 4 people contiuosly for 20 minutes because none of them wanted to do any work - don't let them fob you off . Thats the plan at the moment. Not going to let it rest. I'll see what the verdict is tomorrow and then decide how to take it from there but I can see myself going back and forth. There's no law saying they have to give it you but it sounds like a fault at their end rather than a misleading quote. I bought a 924 at 21 and struggled to get it insured anywhere. The only people who would touch it were Lancaster and I think it was cheaper than my current modern! Tried all the classic insurers like Lancaster but nobody could get me a decent quote. It was no bother last year at 20 because the car wasn't modified but this year its proving more difficult than I thought. Could it be something to do with the variation between online quotes and telephone quotes. I've often had quotes on screen that aren't the same as ringing the company and doing talking to someone. Annoying when it happens because I prefer to deal with a human being. No idea, I much prefer speaking to a human on the phone, but I still go round a few sites to check as you can never tell nowadays. Sometimes its cheaper on the phone, sometimes cheaper online. Just click the buy it now option in the website? Problem solved surely? Even if you can't afford it in one hit it's worth getting a credit card and paying it off in chunks for a saving that big- insurers instalment plans are generally credit managed by a third party company and charge you interest anyway so it's no different to what they'll do. Tried it, it just tells me to phone to complete the payment. But although the person on the phone sees the quote as 550, when they go in to accept it and put it through the price bumps automatically. I can afford to go for it now, and they could probably run it through as a renewal so i'd only be paying when the insurance starts. Just don't want to be swinging words about without actually knowing if there is any sort of obligation for the insurance company to meet the quoted price etc. I can't see why if they quote me for a price, they cant give me it... but then I have no idea how insurance companies magic up their figures. Otherwise every insurance company could just give you a quote for £100, then when you phone to insure they tell you its actually £900.
