Thanks everyone! This was fun for sure. The offset door was because the box section on the left is in fact the top of the generator, accessed from the outside. That generator box was merely sheet metal, because it was under the bed when this was a normal camper. The generator was no simple task to move, so I worked around it. I made it stronger by boxing it in with 3/4 plywood so you could stand on it or put anything on top of it, really. The right side was a storage box, I had to delete that side to roll in with the machines, but could do nothing with that generator unless I wanted to add a bunch more time and money to move it. It was a cool thing, people loved it. I see them all the time for cheap and think "We could do another one of those"... and then I think "Nahhhh, one was enough" lol

Excellent work! What are the clasp type things you used for the engine cover, btw? There's a bunch of these things out there, These ones are not chrome but they're common spring loaded RV engine cover / doghouse clasps.
This truck was sold ( a few years ago) to a retired Harley rider couple and was last seen in the southern US states. I really liked it, but the chassis underneath was really too narrow for something this tall & wide. They don't make these narrow chassis RV trucks like this anymore. The current manufacturers have worked out that in order for a safer, more comfortable operation you want the widest track width chassis available. In low traffic, zero wind conditions it was fine. Pack it in a big group of 75mph semi trucks (huge lorrys) on a windy day, and I swear I thought we were gonna die hahahahaa It turned out good, saved another one and lived on to tell the tale

I've got at least three other crazy builds I can do a thread on, if anyone cares to read them. I do enjoy writing and sharing this stuff on a forum consisting of real retro ride petrol heads. I wish there were more forums just like this one left in the world. We have this forum, don't need any more! Would love to read about your other projects, I enjoy your threads immensely. I'm a little late to this topic! 2021 sept! Opps, sorry.

Nah, I think it looks sweet like this. The flares make it look really cheap, and don't go all the way around the arch. The only thing that would make it better would be GIANT GNARLY off road tires hahaha. Not in the budget however

What's left to do on it? 1. Rear wheel wells, inside & out. 2. Build center console, rear deck and carpet. 3. Wire up the lighting permanently. That's about it. We'll put some cameras on it and do some 4 wheel drifts in the snow, because that is on the way! More as it happens. Thanks for checking it out!

I finished up welding inside the engine bay. After seam sealer, I sprayed the bare metal with a mix of whatever blue color that is and whichever silver/gray was in the paint cabinet. Close enough! I'll get a cheap intake tube and filter later. Oh- and cut the grill openings too.. Later. Lots left to do under the car. I'll get there

Decided to waste most of the day making this strut brace. Something told me the car needed a bit more strength.

Thanks everyone! It is crazy that it's working out as well as it is. Started getting it cleaned up. I connected 12 volts to the power feeds for the headlights and making their debut from a looong time with no juice: (yest that's part of another VW grill I used as a cover. It was in the car so why not!) Woodworking class starts in a few days lol

Are these the subaru gauges in the vw dashboard? Yes sir! I had to build an entire steel bar setup to hold the steering column in the factory location, while giving clearance to set those dash clocks. They're set back about an inch from the back of the dash panel itself, that was as close as I could get them without making another several day project out of it. Not bad where they are. You can see them and they work.

Interior update It took a bit of work, but I was able to tuck the dash cluster from the Subaru in the 411 dash. All the heat & AC stuff still functions, so it's staying. I will obviously pack all the wire harnesses back up under the dash. I'm also building a console to house the shifter & e brake along with the heater controls. It'll all get covered in black carpet and the floor will most likely be black vinyl/rubber. Lots of welding yet to finish. The Subaru firewall and the VW firewall matched up pretty good. I've got them together and seam sealed. I also use Dyna Mat or Kilmat to insulate sound, although the induction sound was pretty cool. Thanks for checking it out, should be finished in another couple weeks. More as it happens.

Once it's done with flares on, I don't think he'll have any trouble moving it on as it is, looks great 👍 🤔 I don't think VW "enthusiast's" are ever going to be interested in a tyoe 4 Variant with Scoobie running gear 😉 It's in a flakebook group called "Ruined VW's, Purists not allowed" and they are going crazy over it. You're correct- it'll be no trouble shifting it on, I've already had an offer

Not to critise Paul but I'd lover that shell a good foot more or as near as you can to it. It pretty much de rigor to lower VW's and it'll sell easier I suspect (as it would attract a greater number of interested buyers) Just food for thought. One of the best parts of Subaru struts is the aftermarket lift and lowering kits. Whomever ends up with this little maniac can go either way with it. I think the front is perfect, the rear is high, but there is zero weight back there so far. I have a bunch of metal work as well as a giant wood structure going in, to conceal everything and have some useable space. The weight will lower the rear to match the front. Also, there is a trailer hitch on it. And you betcha I am pulling a dirt bike trailer with this thing haha That'll get the back down! (basically it's staying like it is while I have it)

Usually it's below freezing on Christmas, but today it's almost 60deg! After breakfast and presents- my son and I stepped outside to film a couple things. It's not done and it's really not "safe" yet haha but guess what? It GOES! Drives amazingly well and sounds awesome (ish, I prefer v8's). New video on the channel coming soon.

Grabbed a few hours of work and drove it out of the garage. It's crazy cool. Nowhere near done, the interior is a disaster and the body is only welded on partially. But it's certainly headed in the right direction!

Love the AWD badge, nice subtle touch. Thanks! I knew I saved that for a reason I'll get back to work on it soon. Reasonably happy with the way it's progressing
