👍 looking great, you thinking about putting flares on ? Jimi the mind reader! I do have some black plastic flares that were originally bought for something else. I was going to stick them on and see what it looks like. I know over there, you guys can't have wheels protruding out from the wheel arch, but over here in the hillbilly colonies, it's a sign of masculinity!
*perceived masculinity anyway lol

This may be a foolish question, but what do you do with the airbag in the steering wheel? Do you simply disconnect it and remove the charge, or do you actually try to adapt the impact sensors to get it to work? I remove all the bag sensors and controllers. If it has no voltage, it cannot go off. Air bags and seat belts along with seat designs, are very specific and trying to keep the bags working in a car that wasn't designed for them, is not a good idea. I cut every bag system component out. The bag in the wheel, is nothing without a signal to it. We used to save the bags and power them up in a backyard, to see how high it will throw things. Bicycles, basketballs etc lol The bag in the wheel is not going off unless I make it go off...
Wire it directly to the ignition for the driver that needs a powder burn hahaha (totally kidding but possible) or the garage door opener hahaha Noooo

How have I missed this?!?! I love your builds and this one is the same but different in so many ways! A useful thing with the Forester is they can be lowered easily, or raised easily - so you can go both ways! Then there's the turbo route... Ideal candidate for a set of steels too - mkIV golf (rabbit?) platform is 5x100 and should be plentiful. That shock tower rust is something else I bought these wheels with brand new tires on 'em super cheap. I liked the look, it reminded me of a rally car. I'm not buying more wheels or a turbo. That'll be for whomever ends up with this thing when I'm done spinning it around out back lol

Time to take the rear interior panels out for welding! Yep, along with some of the bars that are holding the subaru floor pan together. I'm hoping to get back out there later today and get it set into final position, weld it in a few spots and then I'm bolting a seat in it and drivng it! lol

UPDATE: I still need to lower the body about 7" in the front and about 8-9" in the rear. It's going to fit so well, the 411 wiper motor and transmission should still function. The 411 dash will also work, I'll cut it to fit the subaru gauge cluster. The rocker panels/Sills will weld together almost perfectly. Lots of trim and plenty to do, but this is going to work better than I had expected. Didn't even have to drain the radior, or the AC. It all fits and will work, just like it did in the subaru. Freakin' super lucky it'll fit so well. The Hillbilly in me wants to put BIG MUD TIRES and leave it as is, but no... it'll come down and be super fun!

Lots of side trimming to make this drop down. But, it's Going!

I started chopping the floor out of the wagon. It's crazy strong, I was overthinking the engineering for sure. One strap picked it right up and there's still a bunch of the front floor & firewall in the thing. We were able to lift this car body by hand lol I'm super happy, it'll drop right down on the subaru, this is going to work pretty well. No idea how it'll look inside, but that's a concern for a later date! With nice weather, I might go ride rather than weld garbage together- so I'll update again in a few days

Congratulations on getting that title sorted! We do not touch vehicles without a title, certain states- it's like the kiss of death. No title, no sale period. You have sorted it out from a billion miles away! Great job. Coooool truck, cool beetle. A+++

Ok! So I have started chopping away at the Subaru Forester. It's a 2002, makes about 165BHP and has a 5spd manual gearbox. The lady I got it from, had spent a boatload of money on it in the last few years. New/rebuilt transmission, new clutch. New cylinder heads and timing belt, new axles, brakes and prop shaft. She was driving it daily until the plastic body trim inside the rear of the car began to bow and protrude upward. Her mechanic told her, stop driving it and scrap it- the passenger side rear strut tower has rusted off! This is where I come in.... I bought it for more than scrap value because she had receipts showing all the repairs. Once I started taking the interior out of it, I saw the extent of the rust. (we get several feet of snow, a few times each winter and the roads here are salted more than a truckload of margaritas on cinco de mayo. I removed the rear strut and began securing the top strut mount in exactly the same place as the "good side". YES, I used my good glasses and tape measure. Once the strut was positioned with accuracy tolerances up to -+ 3mm, I bought steel tube and started welding a support structure tied to the floor pan with plates, right above the strongest part of the floor, in six places. Once I got the rusted away top mount anchored, I duplicated the braces on the driver's side, allowing me to cut off the remaining strut tower. This was necessary because the body of this Subaru is too wide to fit under the VW wagon. I welded everything half way for now, and cut the rest of the body off. The back end will now fit under the rear of the VW 411 shell. The front end?? Oh that needs to be narrowed as well. More on that in a couple days. I dropped a seat back in it- fired it up and drove it outside, so I could clean up this huge mess! Nothing moves except the suspension. Zero flex that I can see. The side sills or "rockers" as we call them- need to come off too. I have 2x3 rectangle steel that I will build new sills, front to back, once I start securing the front suspension and wing supports. All of this stuff, including scooby dash and windscreen- are too wide, and they're coming out. I have about 2 days in it so far, I expect another few days and I'll be ready to start cutting the VW wagon. I'll get some more pics when I do the front suspension! I'm keeping the ABS, all factory switching, hopefully the cruise control and Aircon. Hopefully. I plan on taking it out back and doing some hoonigan nonsense as it sits now haha Hope I don't fall out!

In the physical world they're the same, center to center of the hubs. Both cars, less than 1in difference. Track width? Ermm yeah...That's going to be interesting because It's like 3 inches per side. But YES I was wearing my glasses! And I even had the wife help with the measurements, in case I was off my rocker again lol (no more than usual anyway) I did make sure the tops of the suspension turrets/strut towers will fit between the bodywork of the VW and yes, they do with room to spare. It's gonna be cool, and different

So this has occurred: 165hp with a rebuilt engine, clutch, transmission and axles. With reciepts. Let the fabrication begin!

I had Chris order me one and send it across in part X for some other nonsense we were dealing with. Nobody around here even knows what shirt that is! They think I'm wearing a playstation shirt, and for that reason I don't wear it much. lol

Slammed look, not for me. Wide tires that stick out of the body- more my style. But the Fuchs style rims look pretty cool. As of right now- it's still up in the air as to which donor vehicle is going under it. Our Subaru got rescheduled until tomorrow. I want to do some measurements even if I don't buy it. 3 series BMW's might work too. It's more than likely getting a roll cage, if it goes V8
