That is awesome. I love the theme tune to that cartoon. I had to go and find out didn't I. I found a remix. Hey Duggee is awesome. Any children's TV programme that can sneak Apocalypse Now references in there is fine by me. The episode with the tadpoles made me howl when I first saw it because of how uncannily similar the tadpoles were to my year 10 form at the school I was working at, and my wife even nicknamed her special group at her school The Squirrels after the group on the programme. One child apparently will always be known as Roly... Best kids TV programme in 35 years.

No, but the car does need to be pretty special for you to become a member. The story above related to DKP2, from the late 1970s. DKP3 is the current version - they've got their club constitution on their website. Outlaw Flat Four over here has a time limit - when I was a member you had to run 12.99 or quicker before you applied for membership, although I think for a time it dropped to 11.99 or quicker. I let my membership lapse a few years ago. What were/are you running to be in the 12s? I had a roof chopped 66 beetle with a 2276 with IDAs, full race car, not a street car. I sold it in December 2005, and helped to form Outlaw Flat Four in January 2006. Bad timing or what! Theres a picture on the first page of the thread in the link below. forum.retro-rides.org/thread/207643/1971-beetle-cal-school-project

I had a evening on tequila once. Got about an inch from the bottom of a bottle of Jose Cuervo, then decided that it was rubbish so I was going to go out. Two pints of lager later the lights went out... Even a sip of tequila makes me feel ill even now, 23 years on!

And another 1970s hot VW story! Gary Berg, son of Gene, one of the pioneers of air-cooled VW performance had a well known blue 67 with a rather serious nitrous motor in the back. It even had water misters under the rear arches to allow for immediate smoky burnouts. Anyway, one night Gary and a group of other races were parked up organising races when one of the more friendly coppers turned up to disperse them. "You all need to move on, AS QUICKLY AS YOU CAN, maybe even in pairs?" or words to that effect, with a bit of a nod and a wink. Gary and Gene jump in the 67 and fire it up, then launch off away from the race spot, the engine hitting 7000+rpm when changing into second, third, fourth, and... fifth? Yes, Gene had designed and made a 5-speed conversion for the Beetle gearbox, and not told a soul!

When I lived in Chester in the late 90s there were rumours of the police having an Impreza and a Mitsubishi Evo with full Barry Boy stick on tat to sucker in unsuspecting wannabe street racers.
I also heard that Walsall police had a couple of hot hatches, complete with body kits and silly wheels to do much the same with.

Imagine going out for a quiet little race with some friends and those guys turn up. I wonder if you got to keep your car if you won? I like the street racing story of Der Kleiner Panzers VW club turning up to the local muscle car club meet one night. The president of the muscle car guys asked the president of DKP if any of the VWs would be up for a race. "Sure", says the DKP chap. "Pick whichever one you want." Needless to say, none of the muscle car guys were willing to lose to a VW... Do you have to run a certain 1/4 mile to become a member of DKP, much like BWA members? No, but the car does need to be pretty special for you to become a member. The story above related to DKP2, from the late 1970s. Tell me about the lowered spring plates. Do you use those instead of adjusting the torsion bar or as well as? You can fit them exactly as the originals are and that’ll give you a 2” drop. I’m going to fit these 1 outer spline up as well. See where she sits like that. The beauty of a drop plate is it gives the initial 2” drop without messing up shock travel and toe in etc. Aren't they slightly longer too, to keep toe settings right? I seem to remember that if you really slam the back of a bug, the lower you get, the more toe in you get too as you run out of adjustment. Mind you, I stay largely stock height at the back on a bug, although my Ghia was five splines down when I got it...

Nope, although my cheapest is my Beetle at £130, my most expensive quote was £9999.99 on my Karmann Ghia when I was about 21. Mind you, I was refused by one insurer out of the back of Custom Car, because the car wasn't modified enough!

Looks like a fun project! Empi stuff used to be brilliant in the 60s and 70s, then the name got sold and was used on cheap Taiwanese chrome carp, but over the last few year the name has changed hands again and it seems to be decent stuff now, a lot of it made in USA. I say to anyone with a Beetle that the first big mod should be twin carbs - 36DRLA or IDFs are ideal. Really wakes them up, makes them more efficient and easier to live with. I quite like the ratty racer look - maybe some faded number circles on the doors?

Dez, interesting point about PCL fittings. All my stuff has got Euro fittings on it, but the stuff at school has got PCL fittings. I've never had problems with my stuff leaking air, but a couple of the bits of school kit do seem to leak quite well. I'll add a box of Euro fittings to my order...

That looks properly serious. Purposeful. Like it'd steal your dinner money, then make you walk to the shops to buy it sweets with your own funds. I like it.
As for the where is it question, I'm guessing somewhere abroad?

Shelving for spare men - now I've seen it all!
Those brackets are quite serious! One of the ones I saw on YouTube (and buggered if I can find it now!) had the brackets above the shelf, suspended from the ceiling. As you say, only as good as the fixings, but if those 45 degree braces are at head height, they could come sharp if you catch your head on one!

Cant believe i cant even give them away!! They are too cool to chuck - I suspect that most of the members on here are more into cars that wouldn't have had these even when new. Not to say there aren't hot rodders on here though! The other option is Mark blackpopracing - he might stick them up on the rodsnsods forum if you ask nicely! crockpot is active on the NSRA forum too, so he might be able to help?

If the fridge is not spoken for i could use it, I have a T25 panel that is going to be a week end away type thing, no rush as it is a slow project like most of my ideas lol. No probs Rob, I'll pop it on your drive by the garage next time I'm over your way.

Huuuuge bump. Really fed up falling over these now. Someone must be able to make use of these....take them away! If not they will be going to a local farm to weigh down tarps. The person I instantly thought of when I saw this is Dez - he's certainly a crossply man.

I've just caught up on the last 5 pages - some of you have been busy! Those lamp posts are lovely. I didn't think I would envy another man's pole... Ahem. I've done a bit, but not got photos because my phone has decided it doesn't want to upload anything.
I've got the Beetle and the T25 running and moved both of them over to my workshop at school, where I've also cleared out a big corner and built a 4m long workbench with dropped section for the chop saw to sit in. Back at home, this let me jet wash the drive (yes, I drew a cock on it too, with bonus spunky bits) and then promptly fill the drive with a skip and the contents of my garage. I'm also just about finished taking down the cat run from the back garden - we live (at the moment) on a busy main-ish road and our cats aren't to be trusted! But as we're on the move soon, and most of them are getting elderly and aren't going much further than the edge of the patio, it's coming down.
Think I should have ordered a bigger skip.
