My father had a R25 - my most prominent memory of it was unbelievable comfort.

I got hold of another big wing diff cover after I accidentally scrapped the perfect condition first one…Idiot. Spent hours getting it presentable again!

I have been collecting bits to upgrade the car over the Covid period, I want to get rid of the remaining rusty components and while I’m at it upgrade them, but without introducing any extra NVH. One of the areas that needs sorting is the rear subframe. By 124 standards mine is in great nick, however most of the arms/bushes are 30 years old and I have a new set in the garage. I also have 2 spare subframes courtesy of Ebay, 1 x 124 and 1 x R129 - which is a beefed up 124 version. You can see the 2 main points of strengthening below – the front part with the tubular section that stops the nose of the diff rising under what and the rear part that is designed for a big wing rear diff cover – to counter the torque forces down the prop being resisted by the tyres.

Umbrella Holder/Subwoofer
I wrote before how I upgraded the original Blaupunkt head-unit that was knackered and the speakers (that were fine as it turns out….) with a VDO unit and German Rainbow speakers. The head unit looks period and the speakers while crystal clear also sound period – ie completely lacking in bass.
I decided to fit an underseat sub, however I could not find one that would fit under the front seats due to the rear vent ducts on a 124. So I bought an Alpine one anyway that was fairly small, metal with the intention that I must be able to fit it somewhere!
Eventually I decided to mount it under the parcel shelf in the boot – I also thought why not make the mount a little larger and that way I can mount a umbrella too, out of the way and not rolling about the boot floor either. The mount is a 12mm bit of ply painted black, then the SW is mounted to that, the umbrella mount consists of some elastic cord combined with some metal cleats. I sunk in 4 rivnuts into the underside of the 124’s metal parcel shelf and affixed the lot together did a bit of wiring and hey presto the umbrella is poised ready and the SW working to fill the hole in the soundsystem. Sounds cracking – infact you can turn the bass up so much that the head rests and first aid kit rattle like hell.
Thankfully music-wise I’m more ELO than NWA – so I’m happy.

What set up are you going for ? Off roaders and best suited to the stock turbo/hybrid with a boost actuator replacing the vac controlled one. 6mm elements too. Lots of lovely torque and nice to drive too. The 044 will be complete overkill for that setup, however you certainly won’t have any fuelling issues. The only thing I’d change on my set up is a bigger / better flowing RR reg, mine can’t cope with the pressure / vol of the 044 so the lowest pressure I can supply the pump with is between 2-3 bar from memory, a bit high, I wanted 1 bar at idle and 3-4 at full boost. It supplies a bit more than that - however no issues to date! clip below of a 6mm LR - gorgeous. Greencarfritz - LOVE the 2CV - a superb build👌 Details below- any questions shout. Perfect, thanks a lot for that it really helps, I'm just going to copy the whole setup! It'll be interesting to see how rapid my truck will be, bearing in mind it'll be close to 3 tonnes fully loaded... and the mud tyres are only rated for 80mph... the rear diff is fully lockable for sliding and burnouts though...

Is there no end to this madness? Oh, I bleedin well hope not. Excellent. Thanks! i was thinking that she has enough power etc, then I get chatting to a German about some special rods and the recipe for a stroker motor with modified pistons... I’ve also had an offer for a proper YouTube review from one of these channels that looks at modified / interesting cars, tbh I’m well up for it, they might think meh, or the might love it. Only one way to find out. i have also looked at the latest Top Speed event results, she’d be right near the top at some of these, when this Covid business has calmed down I think i should go again, taking more video footage and do some more eye opening... ....especially as she now sports some period looking alloys - see below. I’ve had the same problem with find wheel to smear my brake as I’ve fitted r129 sl500 brakes and hubs and spindle and I’ve got the problem any wheels with an error more than 35 they catch the callipers but I’ve not tried any 8 holes yet have you had a look at these, should do the job? Mercedes W201 Evo 1/ R129 500SL 8x16 ET34, 5x112 PART NUMBER 129 400 01 02 Those will fit - however they do poke out a bit at the front. The merc 15 hole versions of that wheel will also fit and are beautiful, however I’m obsessed with the correct ET and those will poke out a bit as stated. What are the advantages of the R129 hub and spindle loudsam - are they beefier?
